Kate’s confession and how it could have happened;
She was about to leave. It was their last meeting — a formality, really — and the last time they’d see Jo before she went into Witness Protection. Kate had been up all night thinking about what to say; if she’d regret keeping quiet or if it were best not to say anything at all…
But Jo deserved the truth. And so did Kate.

I’ve been thinking about this all day. And I’m starting to think Jed’s motivation for Flemson was to demonstrate that Kate can ultimately only trust Steve. “I’m not on my own. I’ve got you, mate.”; “Oh my god Steve’s in on it” etc etc...
It seems now like the function of the relationship between Jo and Kate was to demonstrate that only Steve will not let Kate down. That Kate placing trust in another colleague will ultimately lead to hurt and betrayal.
And I’m sorry that’s just not good enough.
If Jed wanted that, he could definitely have portrayed Flemson without any flirting, tension, side glances, ‘personal matters’, hand holding, mirrored outfits etc. He could have just portrayed two detectives being pals. Talking about shopping. Talking about their home lives. Bonding over Josh or something equally banal ffs.
Jo being gay could have been moot. Yes an aspect of her character, but not a factor in her friendship with Kate. To suggest that Jo was a lesbian and therefore BOUND to fall for Kate is so insulting to queer women.
In order to make the point that ‘Kate can ultimately only trust Steve’, Jed certainly did not need to waste everyone’s time making flemson’s relationship ambiguous enough to invite romantic interpretations.
No. Just not on.
