Fun beauty tip for all us #girls:
Identify that which would deny you your autonomy or seek to steer the course of your destiny for you and attack it. Attack it relentlessly and without pity.

I was watching season 2 of squid game, and when the viewer is introduced to the character Hyun-ju, she is immediately clocked and described in transmisogynistic terms by two cis characters.
I was thinking about how, despite being played by a cis man, the majority of the audience probably would not have clocked this character independently in this moment. her identity is established through transmisogyny and degendering.
it occurs to me that this is a pretty frequent trope-- that the way cis creators communicate to an audience that a woman is trans is through transphobia, through the reaction to her from cis characters.
I think this happens in real life a lot too. transmisogyny needs to be taught, it is not an intuitive hostility.
one of the ways that social norms are taught is through modelling the "correct" reactions to encountering people of different social groups, and teaching people how to identify when someone is a part of that group. this is all a pretty active process.
children (and even adults) are constantly socially taught how one identifies and interacts with different "kinds" of people, often based on what sort of power relation one has to them. this is how you talk to doctors. this is how you talk to police. this is how you talk to people younger than you. this is how you talk to homeless people. this is how you talk to cashiers.
and when you think about how active the process is to socially teach the hatred and devaluing of human beings, you start noticing that process everywhere. that's likely why transmisogynistic caricatures are absolutely pervasive in children's media--there aren't that many trans women in the world, as a percentage of total women one might encounter, so the repetition of social scripts of how to react to trans women (confusion, disgust, violence) must be taught through fiction so everyone internalizes it even if they've never met a trans woman in their life.

As many posts you see talking about the problems trans women face, never forget that it has been worth it. Every trans women i’ve talked to has said they wouldnt reverse their decision to start hormones or get surgery or whatever. Its worth it. I feel so much better about myself generally. I didnt think tjat would happen. You expect nothing to change. You expect to keep being the same depressed boy with no light. But genuinely hrt has added a brilliance to my life i never thought possible. I used to think it would be the same bleak shit. But it isnt. Everything is in color now. Just dont die wondering, ok?
