To Apple, Love Taylor
I write this to explain why I’ll be holding back my album, 1989, from the new streaming service, Apple Music. I feel this deserves an explanation because Apple has been and will continue to be one of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans. I respect the company and the truly ingenious minds that have created a legacy based on innovation and pushing the right boundaries.
I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company. This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.
These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.
I realize that Apple is working towards a goal of paid streaming. I think that is beautiful progress. We know how astronomically successful Apple has been and we know that this incredible company has the money to pay artists, writers and producers for the 3 month trial period… even if it is free for the fans trying it out.
Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing. I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done. I hope that soon I can join them in the progression towards a streaming model that seems fair to those who create this music. I think this could be the platform that gets it right.
But I say to Apple with all due respect, it’s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this. We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.

if exploring your gender is ‘becoming a trend’ then i’m glad it’s replacing the ‘being confused and miserable with no context or vocabulary for what you’re going through’ trend

DEAR EVERYONE REJECTED FROM COLLEGES TODAY
one of my favorite musicals ever, the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has a song that has always resonated with me called Pandemonium. Probably the most important line from that song reads “The best spellers don’t necessarily win”
so think of this process like your elementary spelling bee. You’re amazing and smart and talented. If your arch nemesis gets the word crayon and you misspell syzygy, you are STILL amazing and smart and talented and maybe you’ll win the spelling bee next year instead. “Life is random and unfair. Life is pandemonium”

My mom jokes that college admissions officers use The Stair Test to pick applicants.
How to Do ‘The Stair Test’:
The admissions officers stand at the top of the stairs with applications in their hands.
Then they throw them down the stairs.
Whichever applications land at the bottom of the staircase, those kids get in.
Everyone else doesn’t.
Moral of the story: no matter where you’re applying, college admissions is a crap shoot of randomness. Getting rejected doesn’t mean you’re not a worthy candidate and wonderful human being. It just means some people can’t throw.

What to do when you've been rejected by your dream school
Words from the girl who planned her life since freshman year of high school and didn’t get what she wanted. This is for all those crushed dreams and dreams to be crushed this month.
Let it out - The healing process would be faster and easier if you release your feelings. Whatever they may be. Crying, eating, screaming and even drinking alcohol is advised to numb the pain. (Side note: Be cautious about being bitter about the incident. It’s unhealthy. And so is hating on the school.) This takes time, allot one to three months.
Look at other options - You can always take the year at another school and transfer the next year. Or take your masters degree there. The list goes on..
The pain will never leave you (at least in my case)
Never get mad at your friends who got in.
Never blame God, Higher power, smart kids and yourself.
Grow where you are planted - If royal blue, maroon, yellow or green wasn’t your color. Deal with it. This might just be one of the thousand more failures that you will encounter. Do not let this destroy you. Take this as a challenge and try your best to excel wherever you may be. There is a reason why the higher power sorted you to be in there. In time you will find out.
An advise from my co-didn’t-get-in-my-dream-school friend, Mary:
"It’s okay to feel sad or down about it and let it out all the feelings that you wish to because bottling them up won’t help but don’t take it to extreme cases. When you get in to another school, don’t start hating and judging because it’s not their fault plus you’ll get to know them more, sooner or later you’ll forget about that dream school. Most important thing! Enter a school that’ll help you in terms of the course you want. Don’t just go to one because of your boyfriend or because it’ll make you popular"
Hang in there, little one. You will get through this. :)

Dear Miss ___, We regret to inform you… Do you? Do you really regret to inform me? If you could go back in time would you have done something differently? I doubt it. Just give it to me straight, college of my dreams. Don’t tell me you’re sorry or regretful or ashamed to say it, just tell me I didn’t get in. Don’t sugarcoat it. College of my dreams, tell me my intelligence is subjectively lower than the other girl at my school who got in. Tell me that the countless hours I spent writing, rewriting, and perfecting your essays wasn’t enough. Tell me the money my school teacher mother spent on tutors and SAT prep books and application fees wasn’t enough. Tell me my passions will never be enough. I am not getting in because I’d rather write a song than an essay. I’d rather perform a monologue than write one about my life and in the end it won’t matter because my life does not belong on your campus. You have made that very clear. No deferral. No wait list. No nothing. Dear college of my dreams, I have realized something powerful. You are no longer the college of my dreams. A school that does not want me in the slightest; who doesn’t appreciate the hours, the stress, and the money behind my drive to be educated; who doesn’t value anything about me… A school that doesn’t want me cannot be my perfect school. You were my dream and I am glad I woke up.
My reaction to receiving a rejection letter from my former dream school.

In all honesty, the whole college thing is overrated. Professors can’t tell which kids are going to end up on broadway or not. That’s up to the directors. I mean look at Laura Osnes and Kyle Dean Massey, they went to ‘nobody’ schools because they weren’t accepted anywhere because colleges didn’t think they were ‘good enough’ but they’re huge stars on broadway now. it really doesn’t matter which school you go to, as long as you keep your overall goal in mind, which is to be a performer.
