i love the idea of ghosts not being dead people but just places where time is kind of thin
like one of my friends & his girlfriend have a ghost in their very old new england house that's apparently an old timey little boy who does shit like jump on the bed and slam doors but if they tell him very sternly "daniel, stop that" the activity stops immediately
and i love the idea that years ago theres this rowdy little 19th century boy just being alive and playing in his room but if he gets too loud sometimes, the ghostly form of my 21st century friend shows up and is like "Hey! Cut it out." and then vanishes and no one believes this child

I’ve been meaning to make a masterpost with a list of books and articles for people interested in the Italian Renaissance - so, behold! These are taken mostly from my own bookshelf, syllabi of classes I’ve taken, and bibliographies I’ve compiled for papers I’ve written. I’ve tried to provide a broader overview of the Renaissance with more general topics, and not to give books that are too incredibly specific and not relevant unless you’re working specifically in topic. I’ve also tried to find PDFs or links for anything that you can access online.
I hope this is useful for anyone who’s interested in this period, and I will always be happy to answer questions or try to provide sources for more specific topics!

I'm sure anyone living between the 16th-18th century would find this question ridiculous, but how much did shoes hurt back then? Because right and left shoes weren't a thing until the early 1800s right? I guess its a silly question because shoes can still hurt now but whenever I look at phots of shoes from those times they look so stiff but simultaneously wobbly/the heel to sole ratio looks funny
I’ve never worn repros or looked into it, I must confess. As with corsets, I assume they couldn’t have been completely agonizing all the time or people would have changed them to hurt less. You have to live in your shoes, after all, and even the mega-rich would probably only be willing to put up with pain for isolated occasions. I also know that rights and lefts existed earlier than the nebulous currently-accepted date of “somewhere between 1817 and 1850″- ancient Roman soldiers had them, so I’m not sure when or for how long they went out of common use.
I think, and I could be wrong here, that shoes being made of leather helped them conform to the shape of the wearer’s foot with body heat + time. So it’s possible that straight shoes turned into rights and lefts once they were broken in. (And the breaking-in period is something well known to any modern person who’s ever owned a pair of leather shoes, even with rights and lefts.)
One way of another, there must have been some kind of workaround. It’s hard to imagine normal human beings putting up with painful shoes 24/7 for 200+ years. I’m sure some shoes were uncomfortable, just as some are now, but all of them? Seems unlikely.
Anybody who does more with shoe history care to shed some light on the subject?

rosencrantz and guildenstern moments that make me go bonkers yonkers and are really good displays of their characters - guildenstern wanting to Know and Understand and Fix. and rosencrantz following guildenstern, trying to make him feel better, trying to help his friend. god. they make me insane.
