okay so i can't stop thinking about the third scenario in Hey, I Don't Work Here. there's a lot i can buy about it:
NASA's got a base in Australia for some reason, sure. the US is friendly with Australia and I could see if there were a pressing need to have an observatory or something on the other side of the planet that such a deal could be worked out.
and likewise i can imagine the security for such a place not being particularly stringent- a research station doesn't need to be super-militarized, so there being a fence you can hop to chase after a ball in a residential area- fine, sure, weirder things have happened.
fast-forwarding a bit, the aliens somehow getting it in their heads that NASA has the authority to cede the entire planet to them- they'd have to be pretty stupid but it's an understandable mistake, if you're assuming the planet has one government and the wing of it that launches spacecraft is militarily important. sure.
after Tom gives the aliens the finger and refuses to surrender, this first contact serving as the rallying point for a successful defense of earth, with an ensuing media circus landing him in some actual position of authority as a result- that's a little clownshoes but i can see the outline of it.
but: what was the aliens' plan, here? there's been a "planned attack"- somehow, they knocked out every NASA employee at the base, in preparation for...
...demanding control of the planet over some sort of videoconferencing that no one is awake to respond to, as a direct result of their pre-planned attack on the compound? even if NASA did have any means of acceding to the demand "give us your planet", how could they be expected to do so while unconscious?! and why, having gone out of their way to knock everyone out, would they not be surprised by Tom picking up the call, and proceed as though he worked there?
anyway this is the only thing that is silly and unbelievable about this or any other Tom Cardy song. don't @ me.
#NASA security protocols knock everyone out in the event of an attack so they can't surrender the planet#Obviously

i think the reason it doesn't make sense to refer to AI image generation as "plagiarism" is that in most cases the image it outputs doesn't actually resemble any of the inputs in a way that you would call "plagiarism" if a human did it. like there are exceptions; over fitting is a thing, and there are examples where you prompt with "a bat-themed superhero" and get batman, which I think shows a... lack of creativity(?), (as opposed to prompting with "batman" and getting batman in which case it's just giving you what you asked)
but if you ask it for "anime girl pointing a gun off screen" or something it's unlikely you'll get anything that resembles any specific image in the training set except to the extent that all generic anime girls with guns resemble each other

I think the comparison to plagiarism actually makes sense. Plagiarism, as I understand it, isn't so much about "copying without permission" as it is about "not citing your sources". And the AI models don't really vote their sources.
I don't think the people who don't like AI would be fine with it if they did, though. So it's probably not about that.

I get the feeling that autistic self harm is more likely to involve striking the body than normal self harm. I wonder why that is?
