I just realized the PJO show runners could do something so sick and twisted and amazing during the Circe scene.

What if, the image that Percy sees in the mirror, the “cooler” version of himself, is like book accurate Percy. I just think that would be such a funny, messed up little Easter egg.

Oh my god. The tears in Luke’s eyes when Percy says the betrayal line. The desperate pleading for them to run away. That he doesn’t want to hurt Percy. The tears in Percy’s eyes. The fear and shaking. Percy apologizing for actually hurting him. The look of horror on Luke’s face as Annabeth comes in. How horrified he looks when he looks down at Percy, who he HURT. The realization that Percy won’t join, and the equaled horror of hurting a twelve year old child.

Me: I don't know, maybe the other little kid wandering around asphodel decided to save you a headache by playing with her dad's dog? Cause I guarantee your visit has definitely been the most excitement Hazel has had in the past 60ish years.

something just dawned on me about the Percy Jackson interpretation of the Fields of Asphodel.

In the myths, Asphodel is home to “neutral” souls. They’re people who just lived, not doing anything glorious enough to go to Elysium or wicked enough for eternal punishment. The TV show adaptation expands on the idea by saying the shades are “bound by regret”. Their memories of what they did or failed to do bind them in place until they eventually turn into the asphodel.

This brings us to Hazel.

For show-only people, Hazel Levesque is a main character in the sequel series, Heroes of Olympus. Years ago, a malevolent force took possession of her mother. At her “mother”’s behest, Hazel was forced to commit acts of pure evil. But eventually, her hero’s willpower came through. She and her mother sacrificed themselves to stop the evil that had uprooted their lives. This posed a conundrum once they made it to the Underworld, as the judges of mortal souls bickered over whether to punish them for succumbing to evil or reward them for overcoming it. They eventually decide to send Hazel to Elysium, and her mother to the Fields of Punishment.

But Hazel speaks up. She won’t accept this. Despite everything, Marie Levesque is her mother, and she won’t see this woman, who’s endured so much already, suffer until the end of time. She negotiates with King Minos himself (!) to secure spots for herself and her mom in the everlasting middle.

Now Marie’s regrets must have overcome her. Hazel would have to be content with the fact that, as a plant, Marie won’t know grief any more. But Hazel’s roots never set in. Perhaps it’s because of her divine parentage.

Or maybe, Asphodel cannot overcome her because she has no true regrets. She showed resilience in her mortal life. She prevented a great evil from awakening. And she saved her mother from damnation. She’s accepted her fate among these shades. This is the place for her. This will be enough. That’s what keeps her moving, and keeps her spirit in motion until the Doors of Death are opened and she’s granted her second chance.
