Tyler, the Creator dropped one of the best albums of the year
Tumblr media
Sadly, I have run out of time to write an extensive review on Tyler, the Creator’s amazing new album, Flower Boy. Although I haven’t had time to write a full review, I will outline a few of my thoughts about the album in this post.
Obviously, I really enjoyed the album. I’m a huge fan of Tyler’s jazzy production and was glad he took that approach for the bulk of this project. The only “hard” cuts on this album are the single “Who Dat Boy” and the energy-infused “I Ain’t Got Time!”
“Who Dat Boy” is dope. I love the production and Tyler’s energy. A$AP Rocky’s verse is very good as well. “I Ain’t Got Time!” is one of my least favorite songs on here. The beat is okay and I like the feel Tyler brings to the song. Overall, it’s an okay song.
Some of my favorite tracks on this album include “See You Again,” “911/Mr. Lonely,” and “Boredom.” These tracks are easily some of my favorite songs of the year. The melodies on these tracks are amazing. I find myself walking around singing and humming them without even thinking about it.
The mixing on this album is by far superior to Cherry Bomb. The songs are more listenable and offer more commercial value. I’m not yet willing to crown this as Tyler’s best work as Cherry Bomb, although it has its issues, is still an amazing album. Wolf is a really good project too.
All that said, this is definitely one of my favorite albums of the year and will for sure make my top ten list. I would recommend this album to everyone, even non-hip hip fans and Tyler-haters.

Quicky Review: Nav & Metro Boomin, Meek Mill, and Lana Del Rey
Because of the recent influx of music that has been released, I have decided to condense several reviews into one. I’m calling this a Quicky Review, and it’s something I’ll probably do often as it is hard to write extensive reviews on every new project, especially with my busy schedule. In these type of reviews, I will be summarizing my impressions of new projects into a few paragraphs rather than going into great detail. This week I will be reviewing projects by Nav & Metro Boomin, Meek Mill, and Lana Del Rey.
Nav and Metro Boomin: Perfect Timing
Tumblr media
Toronto rapper Nav recently dropped a mixtape with famed trap producer Metro Boomin. The tape features Metro’s trademark sound: airy trap beats with a dark tone.
I’ve always been a fan of Metro Boomin’s production, and I was not disappointed in his input on this. The beats are well up to the standard that Metro has set.
Nav’s performance on this is, for the most part, lackluster. The auto tune really melds into his voice to such a point where I can’t identify what his actual voice sounds like. He’s not a very skilled lyricist either. His flow, on many of the tracks, sounds like a bad Quavo impersonation. The trap sound is everywhere right now and if you can’t offer something unique as a performer, I can’t see myself enjoying your music.
This album was cool. Nothing special but I could see trap fans enjoying it. It works well as background music while doing something else, like playing basketball or playing video games. Obviously, I wasn’t a huge fan of it, but I wouldn’t be mad if my friends threw it on in the car.
Meek Mill: Wins & Loses
Tumblr media
Meek Mill just released his first full-length album since his well-documented beef with Drake. Many saw this album as his response to losing the battle as well as his recent splitting with Nicki Minaj. In an interview with Hot 97, he makes the claim that the “Losses” in the album title has nothing to do with Drake or Nicki.
These things are secondary to me. I went into this album looking for good music. My first Meek project was Dream Chasers 4. I liked the mixtape, but I was looking for more from Meek. This new album… wasn’t that.
The first half of the album is decent and even good at times. “Heavy Heart” and “1942 Flowers” are really good songs. “Whatever You Need,” is a nice track too, with some smooth production from DJ Mustard. But once we hit track nine, “Connect the Dots,” the album really falls off.
I can hardly listen to “Ball Player,” as the lead/synth is extremely annoying to my ear. Quavo’s verse is nice but the beat makes the song unlistenable to me. “Made it from Nothing,” is a real cliche and over dramatic song with a pretty decent to the good performance from Rick Ross.
I don’t hate this album, but I was definitely disappointed. Although Meek is not one of my favorite artists by any stretch, I expected him to put out a better project, especially with all the hype around it.
As I mentioned earlier, the album starts off strong but takes a nose dive about half way through. Almost half of the songs on this album are throwaways to me. This would’ve been a really dope EP.
Lana Del Rey: Lust for Life
Tumblr media
Pop singer Lana Del Rey just came through with her fourth full-length album titled Lust for Life. I was not anticipating this album at all, as I have not been exposed to much of Lana’s music. I  do have friends who enjoy her stuff, so I decided to give a chance.
Overall, I didn’t get much out of it. The first track, “Love,” is a pretty good song and I enjoyed the first single “Lust for Life” with the Weekend. Many of the other tracks were boring or worse. The song “Cherry,” for instance. Thirty seconds into this song I wanted to skip it. The production and Lana’s vocal performance were terrible. There are times in the track where I can’t even understand what she’s saying.
Many of the lyrics on this album are terribly cliche and many of the instrumentals are dull as well.
The latter half of the album is far better than the first. Most of the songs are decent and some are even really well done. I enjoyed the tracks “Beautiful People Beautiful Problems,” and “Tomorrow Never Came.” “Heroin,” is a solid track as well.
On my first listen I felt like Lana was giving me too little too late as I was already turned off from the album by the time I made it to these tracks.
