Madonna of the Carnation is the first piece by Leonardo da Vinci I’m taking a look at. In this Early Renaissance portrait, he uses chiaroscuro to give a luminous effect to the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, set against a dimly lit room with architectural details like windows, arcades and columns. In the background, there’s a detailed landscape—typical of his portrait work.
One of my favorite aspects of painting is symbolism. Baby Jesus reaches for the carnation, which can be interpreted as him accepting his mother’s love. The carnation, combined with Mary’s gaze, symbolizes her love for him. On another note,,, Mary is depicted in blue, which was common for Renaissance depictions of her and symbolizes her purity and divinity.
This piece really stands out to me for its balance of emotion, symbolism, and precursors of Da Vinci’s technical genius.
Da Vinci, Leonardo. Madonna of the Carnation. around 1472-1478. oil on wooden panel, 62 x 47.5 cm. Alte Pinakothek. Munich, Germany.
