Journey Task
For this task, we had to photograph our journey on one single day. I decided to document my journey at lunch break whilst at college. Each photo leads up to me going to Mcdonalds and then going to flannels up until I am inside as I was not allowed to take photos which is understandable. I chose to do this as it was the easiest option and I kind of forgot about it until the last minute so I did it before the lesson started. My settings were at f/11. ISO-200, 1/200 seconds. These photos would have been better if they were not taken on my phone and on my camera instead. This task was okay, if I put more effort into it I could have enjoyed it more but I chose not to put the effort in. The fact I did the task is what went well at this point.

Typologies
For this task, I walked around Nottingham finding doors that interested me maybe because of their shape, style or colour. I actually liked this task because it made me pay attention more to my surroundings whilst walking around. If I was to do this again I would try to get more photos to show the varied amount of doors there are in Nottingham. If I was to change any of this pictures or get rid of any of them I would probably remove the footlocker door as it is not really that interesting and you cannot really see it in the photo.

Progress shoot
These were some images that I took to try out my idea for this project. I did not like these photos so I will not be using them for my final piece. Knowing that these photos are not what I want, I can work on it by taking all the negatives and figuring out how I want my final images to look.

Project proposal
During this project so far I have looked at Joel Meyerowitz, Martin Parr, William Henry Fox Talbot and a couple of other photographers. My two favourites were Joel Meyerowitz who was documenting what the public couldn’t see after 9/11 and Gabriele Galimberti who photographed children around the world with their toys. The title I have chosen for my project is youth, this is because I wanted the project to link with me and my friends. To explore this I am going to do two shoots showing people’s ideas on us when they saw us together (crime, drinking, drugs) and then I will show what we actually were like and compare them and see if everyone was correct about us. I do have another idea of what I could do, but I am really unsure about it as I feel like it doesn’t really stick to our documentary photography theme. I would probably have to research into it more to find out if it classes as documtary and to see if it would work out if I was to do it. So far I have taken pictures of my outfit everyday, even if it is relaxed or the stuff I sleep in. This links to youth as my outfit is a representation of some of the youth in this day at age. These photos have gone well because they fit their purpose and show my outfit choice for 3 weeks straight. The two locations I have decided to shoot in mainly is my back garden and in my caravan (which I live in). There might be other locations in which the photos are taken in, but that would only be if I thought it would fit my photo more. I chose these two locations because they link to my memories with my friends. Also if I was to take some of these photos in public I would probably be arrested. To communicate my concepts I will take very detailed photos so that people will get an idea of what I am trying to show and then underneath I will be adding small descriptions and camera information to allow them to understand it more. I am planning on doing this shoot on Saturday the 16th of March as people will be staying over st my house so we can all see eachother and do this shoot. For the next couple of weeks I will be writing everything up on tumblr and doing different photo shoots to go along with my project. I want to present all of my photos in a small book that I have created.

Location Documentary
For this task we were given a Location to go visit and take photos of. We were given Derby Road. I really liked this task because I would have never ventured as far as I did to take the photos so it allowed me to take photos of stuff I would never have taken photos of. I liked the way that I edited these photos as it gave them a really American feel to them as they look really sunny and vibrant with a bit of a light fog as well. If I was to do it again I would have taken more shots of the area so I could of had more of them.

Solar-gram
For this task we had to make a pinhole camera so that we could make a solar-gram. Unfortunately for me during a recent storm my pinhole camera was crushed. This then meaning my photo wouldn’t have been exposed correctly for the right amount of time, so I do not have a photo to show you. A solar-gram is an image that has exposed onto photo paper for long enough to be able to see it without having to develop it. They show the sun and the moons path whilst exposed to their light and it will create a rainbow type of path in the sky. I would have evaluated my final image if I had one but I do not. Someone that I looked into for this task was Donna Headrick Moore.
Another person I looked into was Martin Winfield.

Photo
Inside/Outside
Inside- I chose this location because it lit up the face really nice around the nose area and it created really nice shadows from the window behind me. For my settings, I used f/5, 1/400secs, ISO-100 and a focal length of 50mm. I had to use these settings because the light was quite blinding and I wanted it to be on the more natural scale rather than really lit up. I had to use that focal length because I took the wrong lens with me and that was the smallest. I didn't use any other equipment because I had a fast shutter speed so I didn’t really need anything else. I think if I had more time I would have spent more time getting each photo as they are quite rushed. I centred her in the middle as I wanted the wall to be plain so you could see all of the shadows. I found the shoot okay, I could have done a lot better if I was being honest. If I was to do it again I wouldn’t have rushed it as much.
Outside- I chose this location because I liked how the walls looked and how colourful the bricks were. For my settings, I used f/6, 1/120 secs, ISO- 400 and a focal length of 15mm. I had to use these settings because half of the photo was really dark and half of it was light because of the sheltered area we were in. I chose to use that focal length so that I could capture most of her body and the surrounding area. I did not use any other equipment for this photo, but I could have used a tripod if I was going to spend longer taking this image. I centred her in the middle to match the first image I took so they would be composed the same way.

College life task
For this task, we had to go around college taking pictures showing what life in college is like on a typical day. I chose to take pictures on each floor at college as there are 6 floors. This would show how different or similar the atmosphere is on each floor.

Photo Documentary Book Research
Martin Parr photographed how holiday destinations in England looked after they became more popular. He wanted to show how disgusting and un-respected these places were due to the large amounts of rubish and people there were. The book definitely communicates what he wanted as the photos include how many people there were that visited these places and you could see a whole lot of rubbish in the photos as well. The style of photos he chose were perfect to communicate these images correctly. This book stuck with me for weeks after looking at it. His work definitely stands out from others and leaves a lasting impression.

Research 10
The last photographer I have decided to do research into is Mike Brodie. Brodie freighthopped across the USA, photographing people he encountered who were mainly train-hoppers, vagabonds, squatters and hobos. He did this at the age of 18 because he saw some people sat in train carts huddled together. He traveled from 2004-2008 and managed to release two books. He originally used a Polaroid SX-70 but then swapped to a Nikon F3 and 35 mm.

Research 9
The next photographer I have researched is Lynsey Addario. Her work often focuses on conflicts and human rights issues, especially the role of women in traditional societies. After the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, she decided to photograph Afghanistan and Pakistan under the Taliban.

Research 7
The next photographers I have decided to research is Bernd and Hilla Becher. They documented different water towers between the years 1972-2009 as they started to be used less and less as there were other means of collecting and storing water. Since they were used less they started being taken down so the Bechers documented them for historical record I think. They managed to take over 200 photos all together from all across Europe to show the decline in water towers.

Research 6
The next photographer that I have researched into was William Henry Fox Talbot. He documented the Chinese articles that he owned as proof of owning them, which could also then be classed as insurance. He followed strict processing chemistry of it being evenly lit, detailed and black and white. He did this because he wanted everyone to know that these probably really expensive articles in front of the camera are of his possession and nobody else can have them. This was definitely intentional as he wanted to flaunt his items as proof of wealth.

Research 5
The next photographer that I have researched into was Richard Avedon. He documented a year long journey in the American west taking photos of people that he came across and got to know. He helped the people he photographed to become better versions of themselves as he would spend time with them and help them change their lives. He wanted to show people what it was like to be someone from the American West and how different their lifestyles were to others.

Research 4
The next photographer that i researched into was Martin Parr. He documented the conditions at different British sea side resorts. He went from showing how many people crowded these places to showing children playing near large amount of rubbish scattered everywhere. He wanted to show the change these places went through after the economic climate as they used to be a destination only for the rich, but now they are considered places that people go to when they do not have much money. He was communicating the drastic change these places had to go through to be able to accommodate for all the people that were considered poor. I do not really feel much to this project, but the amount of rubbish in these photos really irritates me because these people disregarded decent places just so they could save money.
