that part of Sokkaās Master has always annoyed me but i kind of interpret it as that the rest of the gaang all have a very similar sense of humor, one different from kataraās, and not even attempting to get her humor
on top of that they box her into the āmom friendā role, so they donāt even think that her remarks are jokes
which if i really want to get into it, itās also very reminiscent of men in general not thinking women are funny but in reality they just donāt even try to understand our jokes, or take what we say at face value
(also, zuko has a very dry sense of humor, he would understand kataraās jokes š)
"Katara has no sense of humor."
Katara, ironically, has a dry sense of humor. Just because it gets overshadowed by Sokka's funny antics and Toph's witty one liners doesn't mean she doesn't have one at all. Throughout the whole first season, she is constantly teasing and making fun of Sokka in a light hearted and loving way. In fact, one of the funniest lines in the show (in my opinion) comes from Katara when they were first visiting Omashu.
Aang, Katara, and Sokka trying to figure out Bumi's name. Sokka: I got it! Aang: Yeah? Sokka: He's an earthbender, right? Rocky! [man coughs] Sokka: You know, because of all the rocks Katara: We're gonna keep trying, but that is a good backup.
That line never fails to get a full belly laugh from me. Mae Whitman's delivery of that line is just sheer perfection lol
And when Zuko joins the group, he becomes the target for her teasing.
After Zuko utterly fails at telling Uncle Iroh's tea joke. Zuko: Well, it's funnier when Uncle tells it. Katara: Right. Maybe because he remembers the whole thing. [Everyone laughs]
Katara does have a sense of humor. It's just a little dry. So can we as a fandom stop pretending that she doesn't?
P.S. I don't care that her supposed "lack of humor" was lampshaded in 'Sokka's Master,' that was one episode, and it was wrong anyway. God as much as I like Book 3 I also hate it.

i finally saw the og post people were talking about (surprisingly on twt and not on here), and i still maintain that they werenāt trying to sexualize katara. were they reading way too much into the topic? yea thereās no denying it. i think they saw the different art styles/animation studios (which i did point out) and reached a wrong conclusion.
sometimes there is such a thing as over analyzing a kids show, and atp as a fandom we just gotta roll our eyes and move on, especially when the post is years old
and iāll still say katara looks weird in that scene in dotbs part 1, the other screenshots you show from the same studio look so much better. again, not saying this was donāt on purpose or not bc it probably wasnāt, but why did they have to nerf her like that š
I will also say that zutara fans talking about Katara being "drawn more maturely in her scenes with Zuko" and even focusing on her breasts and hips is WILD when one of the most famous stories concerning Native American women is the rape of a like 10 year old by a man colonising her land.
Btw, Irene Bedard, the actress who voice acted for Pocahontas also starred in Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee which is about the life of Mary Brave Bird, activist and member of the American Indian Movement, and about her participation in the Siege at Wounded Knee in 1973. You can find the whole movie on YouTube.
youtube
It a very fun and thought provoking watch and Irene Bedard did a wonderful job playing the lead, despite this being her first acting role! She even became the first Native American woman nominated for the Golden Globe Award for this role (Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television)!
So if you're looking for a really good movie starring a Native American woman, I recommend this one! It breaks the mold for a lot of tropes and streotypes around Native American women in media and you get to learn about a cool activist too.
#like when i was reading the og post all i could think about was#okay these ppl r unemployed#bc that was an insane reach#but yea the different animation style in book 3 is annoying bc i do think katara is the most affected#*kevin heart hands up meme* NOT saying it was done on purpose#and even if it was#tbh i donāt think i care as long as katara has that face card#which in the pic i originally showed she did not š#again#discourse#kinda vaguely#katara

What is your NUMBER ONE headcannon for each person in the Gaang (Katara, Zuko, Aang, Toph, Sokka, Suki [and Appa and Momo if you feel so inclined])
Katara: After the war, she goes back to the NWT to train with Yugoda and becomes a master healer as well as a master of the NWT fighting style. From there, she goes back to the Foggy Swamp Tribe and masters their bending style, too. With the help of Sokka, Zuko, and (in some headcanons) Hama, she also rediscovers SWT waterbending and not only masters it, but teaches it to the new benders in the SWT. By the time she leaves the SWT, there has been a school established where all bending styles are available for study. She's one of the few who actually has mastered them all, though.
Sokka: He is eager to return home after the war. He throws himself into infrastructure and policy revamps, and he almost singlehandedly staves off the soft colonization attempts of the NWT. Under his efforts, the SWT rebuilds and reestablishes parts of its culture that had been lost during the war. With the discovery of oil on SWT land, he is also instrumental in establishing eco minded extraction techniques, and in trade ties with the rest of the world (although he is very much helped by his sister's deep ties with the Fire Lord). It's a surprise to no one when he's chosen to lead the SWT after Hakoda retires.
Toph: She does not become a cop. Instead, she goes back home and takes over the Earth Rumble, taking it from an underground even to a world wide phenomenon. She eventually allows benders of other elements to join, and the Earth Rumble becomes pro bending. She does also establish a metal bending school. In the end, she is wealthier than her parents, but because she couldn't really care less about money, she keeps enough to live at the standard she wants, and gives the rest away to causes that interest her...like the guy who wanted to set the record for the biggest bao bun ever, and needed funding for an oven big enough to cook it. She also establishes a halfway house for runaway teens.
Zuko: During his tenure as Fire Lord, he establishes a robust social services program that includes subsidized healthcare, education, and housing for the lowest income families. Under his reign, the Fire Nation becomes home to some of the earliest pioneers of mental health. At his wife's advice, he also makes paid maternity leave standard across the nation, and includes several programs to help single parents stay afloat. Taking inspiration from the SWT, Zuko makes some changes to how his advisory staff is selected. Instead of choosing from among the nobility, Zuko has the different provinces elect a representative to speak on their behalf. A lot of the nobles hate this, blaming his wife's influence, but the people adore their monarchs and despite their best efforts, there's little the nobles can do except start campaigning in their home provinces. It's not a perfect system, but it does open the door for the Fire Nation to end the monarchy within a couple of generations.
Suki: She continues to lead the Kyoshi Warriors for a few years after the war. She also helps train troops around the world as they pivot from active war service to more local work. She helps establish something like the coast guards for several different countries. Eventually she retires from that to help her husband run the SWT. She and Sokka make a wonderful team as he handles the domestic policies and she handles foreign affairs. She often jokes with her sister in law, Fire Lady Katara that they ended up with the same job.
Aang: I'll go with my most optimistic headcanon for him. He's an okay Avatar. Not great. Not the worst. After the war, he tries to take part in rebuilding efforts around the world, but he finds his help isn't needed much. He turns his attention back to salvaging what's left of the Air Nomad legacy, and discovers that there are actually airbenders still around. A few of them are even interested in learning to live like the Air Nomads. Many of them aren't, though, and after learning how to actually use their powers, they go off and do their own thing. To Aang's shock and dismay, eating meat has no effect on the strength of their bending, He does learn to deal with it and enjoy his time with the air benders who embrace the Air Nomad culture. He does go on to have kids, and he still favors the benders over the nonbenders. Ultimately, his legacy as Avatar boils down to taking Ozai's bending, and that's it.

i donāt think thereās anything wrong with pointing out how differently katara is animated depending on the scene. and of course a part of it is book 3 having different animation studios and thus different art styles, but itās alarming how katara is the character most affected by this
when u look at specifically the day of the black sun part 1, when katara and aang are together before the siege, katara looks a lot younger than she is usually drawn as
i just pulled this from google but this is not how katara usually looks !! even later on when katara is destroying the air balloons she looks normal ! just this scene she looks off.
of course as a fandom we should call out whatever harmful discussion or bias is happening but i donāt think this is one of them. itās just pointing out this weird art style difference. iām not gonna say making katara look younger was on purpose or not, or if it was another consequence of book 3ās inconsistency
the one episode i can think of where katara looks more āmatureā is in the southern raiders but not because of how her body was drawn but just because her face was drawn sharper, and katara wasnāt the only character drawn like that, all the characters featured in the episode were drawn like it so i would chalk that up to the animation studio
I will also say that zutara fans talking about Katara being "drawn more maturely in her scenes with Zuko" and even focusing on her breasts and hips is WILD when one of the most famous stories concerning Native American women is the rape of a like 10 year old by a man colonising her land.

i think they talked about it in show why iroh couldnāt take down ozai and itās because it would be seen as iroh taking back his throne as heir vs taking out a genocidal maniac. a fire nation power struggle vs righting a wrong, and thatās why aang had to do it, because by virtue of being the avatar him getting rid of ozai would be accepted by the other nations
also iroh couldnāt take the throne even after that is because of his history as a war general. like iām pretty sure this was explained and ppl just ignored it š
tbh i do wish iroh stuck around the fire nation with zuko :( i felt that was a poor writing choice to have iroh leave zuko stranded like that.
I feel like the people who get worked up about Zuko being Fire Lord at 16 are also the people who get mad about the concept of Robin and other teenage sidekicks in comic books. They'll accept aliens, demons, and mutants but apply real-world standards to only the sidekicks. It's ridiculous
I feel like the deconstruction of the Robin character comes from The Dark Knight Returns and other grimdark interpretations of Batman, but they're grimdark on purpose, they're twisting the genre and aren't meant to be actual criticisms. Which is funny because a lot of these kinds of fans hate grimdark but will absolutely apply grimdark standards to cartoons.
There's also a context to apply. Robin is one of the youngest characters in Batman, but in ATLA, Zuko is the oldest of the child heroes. Sixteen is actually not that young to save the world or inherit a throne, by fantasy standards. Which again, doesn't mean it can't be fun to deconstruct things, but be honest that that is what you're doing, instead of acting like some kind of crime is being committed.
