The system includes software from Pogoplug that lets you access files from the DockStar from any Web browser via the Internet. Additional USB ports on the DockStar also let you attach non-Free Agent hard drives to the device, or to create additional storage capacity. What it is: A small docking station for Seagate's FreeAgent Go portable hard drives, the DockStar connects via Ethernet to a home router to turn that hard drive into an instant network-attached storage (NAS) drive for the home network. Would be great to have Tonido/Pogoplug type of functionality available too.The scoop: FreeAgent DockStar, by Seagate, about $US100 I have SBS running on Ionics Plug and am happy w/ it. Personally I have no interest in ever using pogoplug on any of my Dockstars, so I'm perfectly happy with Alexander's great tutorial Thanks Arris.

Debian can be installed in a similar way but also needs the serial cable. This method requires the serial cable described in the tutorial and some familiarity with Gentoo Linux. I basically followed Alexander Holler's tutorial linked above to setup Gentoo Linux and then installed SBS 7.5.1 from Gentoo's software repository. Personally I have no interest in ever using pogoplug on any of my Dockstars, so I'm perfectly happy with Alexander's great tutorial I do not know if a version of SBS can be made to work this way, but this report does not make me confident. Unfortunately the original Linux kernel on the Dockstar is outdated and lacks functionality, so that the choice of software that works this way is very limited. There is another setup called OpenPogo described on that adds some infrastructure to the existing Dockstar software, so that additional programs can be run along with the pogoplug service. So it is not possible to have pogoplug service and SBS running at the same time. Supposedly SBS 7.5 can be run with this setup (I have not tried this though).īoth of the above methods, if done correctly, go side-by-side with the original software on the Dockstar, but you have to decide at boot time if you want to run the internal software (including pogoplug) or the modified Linux installation (usually from a USB flash drive). I currently already have the IonicsPlug (Same as SheevaPlug) but am Otherwise, I would think that the Sheevaplug is the safer way to go.Hi Arris If you know a bit of Linux and are willing to tinker with it and take the risk of bricking, it's not all that hard. So yes it can be done, but no its not straightforward. Once you got Linux running though, SBS works perfectly fine, i've got it running on mine without any issues. Apparently this is also the reason why Debian's ARM distribution does not officially support the Dockstar. A full-blown Linux can be run on it ( tutorial) but the bootloader needs to be tweaked and chances are you brick the device if something goes wrong. Dockstar is essentially a Sheevaplug with 128MB RAM, no real-time clock, and an added 4-port usb hub ( comparison).
