The Man Behind The Method - Joseph H. Pilates
For anyone looking at health, fitness or diet approaches on the Internet the choice can at times be baffling. Fads come and go, and so-called gurus seem to spring up from behind every corner of the Internet woodwork.
They push methods that range from reduced caloric intake to exercise regimes that will push your body to the maximum - and sometimes even beyond.
Many people will become devotees of these fads, but for those who will stick with the tried and proven that will deliver both significant heath benefits, exceptional weight loss and perhaps most importantly the ability to cope with everyday tasks through strength and physical resilience there is one method that stands yards above the rest - Contrology also known to the world as Pilates.
However, it may surprise many people that the individual who pioneered Pilates, Joseph Pilates was born long before we all had access to the latest diet and fitness fads.
Pilates, which emphasizes core strength, for instance in muscle groups in the abdomen, inner and outer thigh and lower back was the brainchild of a man who was born in 1883 near Dusseldorf.
It's also not surprising that the man who came up with one of the most influential approaches to exercise and natural well being had parents who would influence his approach.
Joseph Hubertus Pilates had a father (Heinrich) of Greek descent who was a championship gymnast and a mother who was a naturopath. She believed strongly that the body would be able to heal itself without the aid of man-made artificial drugs.
The foundation of this upbringing would lead Joseph to lead a man who suffered from ailments such as rickets and asthma to develop an approach to whole physical health.  That approach is still allowing people who are suffering from various physical ailments today to enjoy a quality of life that they would otherwise have been denied by traditional approaches to health and well-being.
There was no approach to health, physical fitness and sheer strength that the young Joseph found unattractive. Whether it was bodybuilding, yoga or the martial arts - and especially gymnastics he applied himself diligently to the both the practice of those arts and the study of what made them so useful in building better bodies, better health and in particular a balance between exercise and an entire quality of life.
Even today the images of the man who was well into his 60's when they were taken show a physique that would have been the envy of a much younger person. For what was then a man who died in the late 60's (1967) he was the polar opposite of the bodybuilder. Lean and with an incredibly low body fat he would become the ideal for many sportsmen (and women) well into the future.
Unsurprisingly his physique allowed him to master some other disciplines. He was an accomplished skier and diver - and boxer who put many others to shame.
When he was at the peak of his physical prowess, he also toured with circuses and posed as a 'living Greek Statue.' Although this may seem off in the modern age, it influenced many bodybuilders to follow his example.
In what would become one of the guiding principles of modern-day Pilates he believed in what many today believe to be the Olympian ideal. A balance between body, mind, and spirit. This philosophy came to encompass the idea that many of our modern health issues stem from bad posture and the way that we breathe.
Joseph Pilates was a man before his time. That is perhaps why his methods of health and well-being survive Internet fads.
