Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and all endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

Entry 5
Name: A Dowry of Blood
Author: S.T. Gibson
Cover:
Date started: 3/5/2024
Date finished: 3/6/2024
Early impressions: The style is beautiful, very lyrical and captivating. I am immediately rooting for our protagonist, and I’m definitely a sucker for vampire books. I hope that the story feels satisfying and complete by the end, with how short it is and whatnot.
Final impressions: beautiful!!!!!! Very compelling. I love reading about unhealthy relationships and vampire sex. It didn’t feel short at all!!! Definitely recommend

Name: The Starless Sea
Author: Erin Morgenstern
Cover:
Date started: 1/16/2024
Date ended: 1/20/2024
Early impressions: intriguing!! I feel like this is a Russian nesting doll of a story
Final impressions: I liked it!!!! Not as much as I had hoped I would, but once I got used to being thrown around to different plot lines, it was very satisfying to watch them all come together.

Initial impressions: chapter 3 is hard to get through for sure, very triggering, but I have hope that it will get better 🫡
Final impressions: I did not really like this one 😭 it felt very predictable and kind of boring. Not terrible by any means!

Entry 2
Name: The Night Circus
Author: Erin Morgenstern
Date started: 1/5/2024
Date ended: 1/11/2024
Initial impressions: Very intriguing!! I love the use of second person at the beginning, and the setting is just as interesting as I had hoped. The authors style is wonderful, painting such a whimsical, magical, mysterious world and still leaving enough room for imagination. I am really excited to see where this one takes me!
Final impressions: great!!! Amazing!!!! I really really enjoyed this one!! I had a hard time tearing myself away, even though I’ve had a busy few days. I can’t wait to read more from this author!!

Entry 1
Book: The Death of Jane Lawrence
Author: Caitlin Starling
Start date: 1/3/2024
End date: 1/5/2024
Early impressions: (Chapter 5) I am absolutely in love with the style this author uses. I will admit, I was expecting more horror than romance. Regardless, I really enjoy the chemistry between the two main characters, and I’m looking forward to how the story will play out. The medical gore doesn’t bother me much, but I presume it will get worse.
Final impressions: I loved it!!!! I was captivated the whole time, I have nothing negative to say 👍
