1.) Orwell thought imperialism was an "evil thing." He disagreed with the imperialist empire (the British) that was oppressing the Burmese people, but also was upset that they didn't like him just because he was from England. It was hypocritical how he disagreed with their oppressors yet they still chose to associate him with them. He disliked his job for this same reason. -"All I knew was that I was stuck between my hatred of the empire I served and my rage against the evil-spirited beasts who tried to make my job impossible." 2.) Orwell is always being made fun of and taunted by the Burmese natives. So when he is faced with the decision of shooting the elephant (despite not wanting to,) he decides to maintain his European presentation by shooting the elephant. This is "the real nature of humanity" because it shows how the society we live in reflects everyone, and the relationships we keep. 3.) Orwell goes into detail when describing the horrendous death of the elephant because it was more related to him. The elephant's death was at his hands and more of an impact rather than the Indian "coolie." Orwell describes his death in a swift like way, because it wasn't much of an impact to him. To him it was just a person who made his job impossible- just a part of the whole. While the scenes were described in two completely different ways with the use of antithesis, the way he perceives it is almost ironic.

1.) When Thoreau references to a "spiritual life," he means a religious life, while a savage one is that which hasn't been tainted by human life. And I don't believe that the spiritual life and savage one will never meet because Thoreau says how we have these natural instincts, while religion is a thing which humans have created. Religion is a product of humans while a savage life is revolved more around the nature which surrounds us. 2.) Thoreau means that people are so interested in the answers we discover instead of realizing the answers which are already given to us. He also explains how human instinct is what gives us the answer in the first place. 3.) Thoreau keeps explaining how hunting is one the vital things to experience or learn when trying to become closer with nature. It being one of the "best parts of his education" is basically saying how it, compared to hunting with a gun, is more natural in comparison. It was more one on one, while hunting with a gun is provided by a human made object. 4.) Thoreau says the tints of morning and evening cannot be described with language. 5.) Thoreau uses imagery to go into detail when describing this "harp" and the sounds which can almost transfer whoever is listening into another world. He also just goes into detail about the natural noises 6.) Thoreau speaks about Genius, Heroism and Holliness which are these man-made ideas and concepts. To go against these ideas is what is difficult because its everything that surrounds us. Thoreau speaks about the emotional and "sensual"

My theme's "Embrace of Color" is titled such because I used complementary and inverted colors to display a greater emphasis on the vibrancy and actual color.

Francisco Goya and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres were both Romantic artists who created their pieces during the 19th century. Goya was a Spanish artist who was known to have a variety of portraits. Ingres was a French who also created many portraits. Goya's piece, Y no hai remedio (And There's Nothing to be Done,) was a dry point etching part of the series, The Disasters of War. This piece was published in 1863, which was 35 years after the artist's death. The piece emphasized the horrors of war that came with the French occupation in Spain. The series emphasizes the themes of war such as war, famine and politics. The piece shows French guns in close range, pointing at the Spanish patriots. Also, there are bodies in the foreground that make the viewer wonder: are those civilians or soldiers? Ingres' piece, Le Grande Odalisque, displays a nude woman lying down with her head turned towards the viewer. Ingres' piece does not relate to war in any way, and instead has a more sensual and tender feeling to it. The piece possess many Turkish elements such as the peacock fan, tapestry-like turban and incense-burner. The piece also displays an inconsistent arrangement of limbs. The elongation of limbs shows the heavy influence from the Mannerist period in Italy. Ingres' piece contributed to the further development of the nude female form. While both pieces were from the Romantic movement, they both display a very different subject matter and creation technique. Goya's piece has a very rough feeling to it to help emphasize the hardships of war, while Ingres' piece conveys a softness and tenseness to emphasize the sensual subject matter.
