was just alerted to an extremely funny way to "crash" a game of MTG in paper: if you get all three of these cards on the field at once with Caged Sun choosing green, then tap a Forest (which includes your creatures) (which includes Ashaya and the animated Caged Sun) for green mana, then Caged Sun's last ability sees a land adding green mana and helpfully adds another green mana. since Caged Sun is itself a land, and it just added green mana, this retriggers the exact same ability off of itself, infinitely. and normally in this kind of situation someone would be able to jump in with an instant-speed response (either you with a wincon using the infinite mana or an opponent with removal), but because mana abilities explicitly cannot be responded to, everyone is forced to just sit there and watch Caged Sun jerk itself off into eternity

I think what gets me with the whole "positionality of independent artist/artisan" discourse is the fact that it's soooo stupidly simple unless you view class as income based or want to needlessly moralize as to position yourself as pure.

I'm an independent artisan, I am petty bourgeois because I have petty bourgeois class interests and have small amounts of capital--even if it's just in my personal checking account. It does not matter that I make the same amount I'd make working retail full time.

Capital is not the same thing as wealth or money more generally. Capital is money used to gain more money. When I buy a hide and hardware, I am utilizing my money as capital so that I can transform those materials into a final product that I sell for more than those materials cost me. Thus, it is in my interest to be able to get those materials for as cheaply as I can, which is to say, it is in my interest for the companies that I buy from to buy their necessary labor as cheaply as possible. There is a distinct possibility that I make less than the workers who raise the cows, tan the leather, and work in the warehouse, but they are still working class--someone else extracts surplus value from their labor--whereas I am not.

I sometimes vend at a local sex shop. If there were to be a struggle between the workers and the owners, it would be in my direct material interest to side against the workers in order to maintain my relationship with the shop. Whatever personal choice I make in the matter is irrelevant. Whether I act against my own interests or not, I still occupy a position that puts my interests in opposition to the workers' interests.

I don't think people should be using ChatGPT as a therapist, because best case scenario is the computer says some platitudes and at least nothing gets worse, worst case scenario it'll end up reinforcing whatever unhealthy thought patterns they may have because the computer has been trained to be a sycophant. But I'm going to be real, I don't think "you're actually morally tainted if you talk to the computer" and being an annoying scold about it is in any way the right way to get people to stop doing it.

And I don't mean that in a "you need to sugarcoat the harsh reality" kind of way, because there actually isn't any harsh truth being imparted onto a person by going "oh you sweet summer child" and then telling them how flawed of a human being they are for relying on generative AI for comfort. It's just tiresome moralizing.

If you want to actually help these people you kind of need to cut out the "these people are bad for talking to the AI" part, and actually think about why they're talking to the AI. Could that be indicative of a bigger social issue? Something that you can't just scold people out of? If the issue is that you feel they shouldn't be talking to an LLM and instead talking to a therapist, could there be a reason as to why they are not talking to a therapist? Could there be an explanation for this that doesn't hinge on "this person is bad and lazy?"
