In defense of the Femme fatale: a look at Double Indemnity.
What would women be without a bit of fun? More than an archetype demonised for its deadly implications, the femme fatale phenomenon is a window to freedom, the exploration of ambition and, above all, the pleasure of getting away with it.
ββββββββββββββββββββββ ΰ¨ΰ§ βββββββββββββββββββ
For Billy Wilder and his audiences more than eighty years later, the embodiment of seductive danger is much more than a beauty with perfect curls, as Double Indemnity reflects. Phyllis (Barbara Stanwyck) is the central figure in a plot full of temptation and crime, based on deception for personal gain.
And now, more than ever, we can take another look at this instalment of film noir, where Dietrichson is not just the sexual nymph who wants to kill and manipulate anyone who gets in her way, but a character who reflects reality.
You have to hand it to Phyllis, for like many femme fatale, she is seen as a representation of defiance, influenced by her particular circumstances and environment, but in a subtle and almost sinister way, and what if the ends don't justify the means? Machiavelli's much derided extremist status is repeated throughout the play and others in the genre, where the ambiguity of our moral compass is tested to experience almost first hand the emotions of those involved.
We must be vigilant here, for as long as we take sides, we will fall prey to the manipulations of the characters. Phyllis and Walter are two sides of the same coin, a dog chasing its own tail and believing that its wiles are not being used for the will of others, who do we trust when no one seems to know the truth?
Both characters influence each other, revealing each other's weaknesses and ambitions. In this sense, Phyllis and Walter are equals, each using the other for their own ends.
Power and control, isn't that what everyone wants? We can't limit ourselves to mystifying the image of the femme fatale, to being fascinated by the almost Greek idea of the link between beauty and death. We have to see the duality of the characters, which is essential to understanding their actions.
The double life is one of the most used devices in the genre, and with good reason, as it plays with the multifaceted nature of the characters and draws us in. They are not entirely good or bad, they are completely unpredictable.
By extension and thanks to this position, we can take the femme fatale out of her narrative box, where she only serves to seduce the 'poor' protagonist with her beauty, so that we are not fed with concepts that limit us and extend our understanding of the term to something beyond.
Phyllis' tragic fate is not only the result of her actions, but also of the circumstances in which she finds herself: an unhappy life and a chaotic marriage in which crime is not only a power play, but also a search for liberation⦠In the end, she is both victim and perpetrator, caught in a web of her own making.
In defence of the femme fatale, we must recognise her complexity and humanity, which few of us accept about ourselves, even in the social reflections that are films or books. Phyllis, like many other femmes fatale, is not a simple archetype, but a key tool for film noir, where her character can and should be further analysed by the viewer.

Κ Aftersun: Are we happier in our memories than in reality?β
Κ
β΄ January 23, 2025. βΛΰ·
While this is a transposition that has nothing to do with Seneca's entire statute, I firmly believe that Charlotte Wells's film is so multifaceted that it allows for opposing and complementary readings of its characters in equal measure.
ββββββββββββββββββββββ ΰ¨ΰ§ βββββββββββββββββββ The situations are pleasant, simplistic yet heartbreakingly human, with Calum's (Paul Mescal) tender witticisms and his father jokes concealing conflicts that slowly escalate into their reality. The film shows us, without much fuss or show, that time does not heal everything, that we are happiest in our memories because they sometimes fade for our sake. What are we but the pictures of our happy moments, or the silly dances in places where no one knew us? Aftersun is a subtle visual and narrative treatment of pain, but it does not completely erase it. Like time, the film navigates in our memories, in what we may have overlooked unintentionally or by force. We are Sophie in the past and in the present, sometimes also Calum, trying his best not to ruin the moment at the cost of our own peace.
It would be foolish to pretend that this coming-of-age film, full of emotional mirrors for the viewer, is a film of tissues and snot for the simple pleasure of appealing to our empathy.
Aftersun works on a micro level with vital elements such as nostalgia and loss in all its forms. Action, or the lack of it in the face of different situations, is also what makes Wells' work so special, for aren't we the ones who deform past events to the point of unconsciously changing them? the ones who miss not having noticed things we couldn't intervene in? The powerlessness of an isolated space like the present of the past, Sophie's position as a child not allowed to help her father, and Calum's willingness to keep everything to himself in order to make her happy.
The intimacy of the film goes beyond the superficial analysis of its subject, because visually it feels alive, with a pastel, almost dreamlike texture, and a camera that allows the characters to exist in silence, to be more than their careful dialogue. The lighting plays an important role in the expression of the characters' minds, like the clue that is removed by the first experience, which, from a spectator's point of view (like Sophie's), makes all the sense in the world. His narrative does not replace the aesthetic, but accompanies it, without in any way overlapping it.
One hour and forty-two minutes condense weeks of experience, years of pain and the innocence of two characters who are nothing more than ghosts to us and to themselves, and all that time is not enough to heal the emptiness Aftersun leaves in its viewers or to dry the escapist tears of those who say they never cry at the cinema. It's a film to live and relive, because your own memories will be there, and it will look more beautiful with every viewing, even if it hurts.

π Location: my mum's house.
ΰ³ββ· work of the sesion ΰΌβ§β
It feels strange to get back to my normal activities, even though I was discharged from hospital months ago and now I'm back in my hometown on holiday. I've been challenging myself to keep up with my German lessons, and I've found some books and workshops to help. Today I finished my lesson on Duolingo, day 123 if I remember correctly, but I don't think it's enough. So I took the book and went through the first unit. I accidentally got a table misgendered, but that's ok, everyone makes mistakes.
The session was cool, interrupted by my niece, but better than Duolingo, I will practise listening to music and maybe in the future watching Druck, after all I remember the plot and characters so it should be easier for me.
π§: make it wit chu ; queens of the stone age
π€β check list
π₯ look for some media in german.
π₯ do 200 days of duolingo.
π₯ start over on memrise.
π₯ study one unit per day (if i can).

lately my study has been interrupted by major forces, so i couldnβt go to uni or study while i am here (still here, just a little bit better).
I went days saying that i wanted to pick a new language to learn and everything push me towards german. Itβs my second day studying it and i fin it particularly fun, like a combination of my two main languages.
Iβm taking baby steps, figuratively and literally. I downloaded study cat (an app made for toddlers i believe) and make my progress like i the good old days: like a baby; but then i discover it was a payed app and delete it immediately.
In my search to feed the vampiric need of speaking this langague i look anywhere and everywhere for resources, thatβs what i found so far:
π₯ Memrise [Quick sentences to train your memory] i didnβt play with it properly.

Hi! Long time no see, guys!
I'm really happy because I finally took my first class of the critique seminar last Friday. I had to catch up because I'm actually late (the seminar started on Friday the 16th).
Anyway, the work of the session was smooth as butter, I just watched Borom Sarret, a great Senegalese short movie from the 60s, and wrote a little review about it. I focused mainly on the visual and socio-political aspects of the movie and I think I did a great job.
Our professor asked us to make a public account to show our progress in the semester, so I made a side blog! It's in Spanish though, so I don't know if anyone here wants to read it anyway, but I'm making it pretty just in case, you can find it in my pinned post at the very end!
Also, I didn't do proper study sessions and just went straight to finishing my work in one sitting while I was on a phone call with a friend. My next class is next Tuesday and I feel really good about it, before I was so scared for no reason and had so many absences, so I'm glad that changed for the better.

π€ Time: 5hr 35 minutes (new record!)
π Location: my dorm (as usual)
ΰ³ββ· work of the sesion ΰΌβ§β
It's all fun and giggles until you have to edit for hours without a break because you had to kick out some work to focus on midterms.
that session was rough, but at least funny games [2007] is one of my safe movies when I don't know where to find inspiration: it's short, simple and cool. using premiere is honestly one of my weaknesses. i never paid attention when it came to doing exercises and almost always relied on my friends and silly little video editing apps, but not anymore!
today was the day, no questions, no distractions, just pure madness and 32onz of coffee in my system against this dumb ass assigment, and i did it!
[Should I do some kind of review of my study sessions? the movies I watch on it? Let me know if you want to know anything in particular, see you soon! (in a few hours unfortunately)]

ΰ³ββ· today's stats ΰΌβ§β
π Subject: Film direction - [ midterm season!]
π€ Time: 2hr 11 minutes.
π Location: My boring dorm (again).
ΰ³ββ· work of the sesion ΰΌβ§β
Hi, so today I did something different because I'm studying for one of my midterms, usually I divide my work into annotation vs flashcards and then I study like a maniac until I learn something new or die trying (metaphorically). So here is today's schedule.
ββββ‘ββββββββββββββββββ‘ββββββββββββββββββ‘βββ
βText to summarize: 5βstudy deadline: monday 20thβ
β‘ study block I:
β text count: 1/5.
I managed to summarize Christian Metz's monologue, it was pretty easy, but I need to break it down even more for me to fully understand it, I would pass the notes to flashcards later. The text talked about censorship in the history of cinema and the moral censorship that some filmmakers have with their own work, so it was nice, its easy to be a college level text and i find it pretty entertaining

β‘ study block II:
β text count: 3/5.
My girlfriend joined me to study, actually she just listened to me and did a little chatting to get me in theme and it was actually quite fun and as an enrichment I believe is a great way to study this of being heard by someone as a dialog ratter than a questionary.
I managed to finish my notes for 3 of the 5 required texts, and left the other two for tomorrow (they're quite complicated for me, actually boring if I'm honest, but that's it I guess?), and with that I just left the basic concepts and I'm supossed I'm ready for my midterm!

ΰ³ββ· today's stats ΰΌβ§β
π Subject: Film editing theory.

ΰ³ββ· work of the sesion ΰΌβ§β
I finished my essay!
I have to admit that it was hard, but I finished one day before the due date, at some point I find myself trying to fill empty spaces because it was such a short fragment of the movie that I only had two or three interesting things to hang in my analysis, but I manage to get to 2271 words.
The class is tomorrow, so I'm a little nervous, even though I know they won't give us any feedback until next week, but I mean, how can I blame myself?
Anyway, I'm glad that I used the pomodoro method so much and wrote down my tasks from the most manageable to the least, I really think it improved my study routine! That's it for today, but I have a midterm coming up, so you'll see me around.
