Naruto fight sequence study
Draft:
Before I start to make the draft, I took my time to understand each movement and made time chart and analysis notes.
I found it really important to have my thoughts and the movements organised in a written down method.
During the process I did both frame by frame method as well as do keyframes first then fill in the rest.

Character designs and development for a new project “The Visitor”. The creature was a hybrid between beetle and crocodile, the original design was a beetle hybrid with whale because a similar texture could be created and rhino beetles has really cool horns (which would look majestic on a whale) but while I was doing research I found that it’s already been done.

Crime and punishment - character line up
I was very inspired by Torsten Schrank’s character design for Klaus. I really enjoyed the subtle shape language and I studied how dynamic and volumic his poses are. Under his influence, I started to design poses more carefully and make sure they fits the character’s personality and tells stories through the character design.

Crime and punishment - Character expression and poses
Last time I did character expression was in post #57. I wasn’t happy because the emotions looks default and doesn’t give enough character. So this time I paid extra attention to create more authenticity and make the characters more realistic by giving them suitable facial expressions.

Crime and Punishment - storyboard
I choose to illustrate the scene when Raskolnikov committees murder to the old pawnbroker. I was paying attention to the rhythm and atmosphere of the sequence by controlling the size of the shots and what comes after another action.
In page 2, 3, and 4,I wanted to show Raskolnikov’s inner activity by giving him repetitive shots that zooms in on his extremely tensed face, then his eyes, then right after that I would show what he is looking at (the back of the head of the pawnbroker).
The pace was still steady in pages 2-3 because it was the calmness before the storm (shown by steady cameras), the mood completely shifts on page 4 when Raskolnikov commits the murder as the perspectives becomes extreme and a lot of rotation in the camera were given.
If I were to do this with more time I will definitely add in text for dialogues and stage directions!

Book - Drawing from life
Life drawing in the kitchen while chatting with my mum
Life drawing at local cafe - I think the working area looks more interesting than customers with chairs and tables
Observational drawing of a fruit truck selling pineapples, watercolour on paper. I added characters digitally in procreate using a contrasting style, inspired by series like “The Amazing World of Gumball”.
Life drawing at my local market, because of quarantine it looks very empty, and its also going through construction. I made a bad decision by standing instead of sitting down, because I applied a lot of pressure on the long sketchbook that I’m holding with one hand for a long time, my fingers hurts a lot after its finished 😂

Quick figure drawing exercise.
After reading the book “Force” by Michael Mattesi, I had a better understanding of the use of line of action, exaggeration and contrast between straight and curve lines in figure drawings. I also intentionally tried to use shape to give the person more characteristic to make it fun.
I actually have read this book in early 2022 but I couldn't really understand the information and I didn’t know how to apply them.

The project is about a mysterious hotel located at the edge of the universe, where people can come and view the infamous sunrise. It was once popular and grand in the 1960s, now it is old and isolated.
Because the story is more easy going, I adjusted the style to be more cartoon and flat instead of using a semi realistic style.

Research drawing, poses and design of the protagonist
Story:
The narration starts with the protagonist on the road, being seen as a vengeful traveller, who is on her journey to take revenge from the mysterious antagonist, who seems to be immortal and undefeatable for unknown reasons, and who was mythified by commoners as a powerful demigod.
The hero seems to care about nothing but revenge, she would risk others' lives as well as her own just to achieve her goal, to kill the antagonist. But on her trip, she encounters other characters who gather around her, even though she seems cold and unapproachable.
After experiencing dangerous situations together on the road, she starts to realise that there's more she cares about in this world other than revenge, but she is getting close to her goal, to hunt down the antagonist... At the same time, the hero’s companions started to unravel the abnormal past between the hero and the demi god.
For this imaginary project, I was strongly inspired by the elegant, elongated shapes of 90s anime, like vampire hunter D Bloodlust and Hellsing. I thought the style really matches the dark and gory nature of my story. For character designs, I was inspried by artists like Ami Thompson, Hideyuki Kikuchi and Yoshitaka Amano.
