I believe it was ten years ago today that @austin_merrill rolled into northern Ghana and I bussed from my home in Wantugu to Tamale where we met for the first time. We made this story on Guinea worm disease for GOOD Magazine @goodhq, and we haven’t stopped making stuff together since. Good collaborators are hard to find — hold on to them! (And on Guinea worm: the latest press release from @thecartercenter, sent just a few days ago, tells me there were 30 human cases of #guineaworm reported worldwide in 2017, 15 in Chad and 15 in Ethiopia. While this is a slight uptick from 2016, it’s wild to think that there were thousands of cases in Ghana alone when I arrived there in 2006.) #everydayafrica #everydayeverywhere #ghana (at Tamale, Ghana)

Amazing night last night at the #EverydayDC exhibition - photographs by students of twelve middle schools in #dcpublicschools (and one killer spoken word performance!). Many thanks to @pulitzercenter and especially @fareedrmostoufi for their work on this incredible project - of all the ways I’m thrilled to see @everydayafrica grow more legs, this is up at the top of the list! #everydayafrica #everydayeverywhere (at Pepco Edison Place Gallery)

My #bestnine2017. #Kenya, #PacificNorthwest, #Amsterdam, throwbacks to work from #Malawi and #Mali. Good friends; worked with my favorite people to publish a goddam book; and maybe the greatest victory is @jdistew saying “this is the first time we were actually together for many of these moments.” May we be a force for good in these dark, uncertain times. #everydayafrica

My musician brother sent me down a rabbit hole tonight looking at photos from the January 2009 Festival au Désert in northern Mali. It was an incredible few days of performance – stars like Salif Keita onstage, but then, even better, many musicians from across West Africa gathering in the dunes to play music together, audience or not, until the sun came up. It was magic. This was the last Festival to be held out in the desert, in Essakane, before it was moved into Timbuktu. Since 2012 the Festival has been in a state of perpetual postponement due to instability in the region. (Their website has dates for the 2015 festival crossed out and instead says "Still in exile", which breaks my heart.) But many of the musicians associated with the Festival have been consistently on the road, touring as the Caravan for Peace in Africa and the US. These photos: dancing to Salif Keita's performance; Keita onstage; the crowd; Khaira Arby onstage; musicians by firelight; members of Tuareg band Shallo (plus baby); views of the crowd. I spent my 25th birthday on this trip, a joint assignment for @thenationaluae @time @globalpost – many thanks to the editors who made this possible @clintmcleandotcom @markrykoff @andy_meldrum. #mali #timbuktu #essakane #festivalaudesert #everydayafrica #everydayeverywhere (at Essakane)

Found these portraits hung on a construction site (corner of 23rd and Union, just across from @uncleikesglassandgoods) with no information. Did some searching and discovered centralareacomm.blogspot.com, a website that collects stories of the elders of this neighborhood. Whether this physical installation is a guerrilla effort or no, would love to see this all over the ‘hood... (at Central District, Seattle)

A small tribute to Hilla Becher, RIP. The typologies of Hilla and Bernd Becher are among my favorite photographs and taught us all so much. One of my own typologies (admittedly a big dip in quality from the Bechers!): Discarded PlayPumps at 16 primary schools in Chikwawa, Thyolo, and Balaka Districts, Malawi, photographed 2015. The PlayPumps, merry-go-rounds meant to pump water, are one of international development's greatest failures; there are likely thousands discarded across southern and eastern Africa. At each of the 16 schools represented here, I was told that they already had a functional water pump (which, when broken, could be fixed with parts that were locally available), and that an organization showed up and replaced those functional hand pumps with PlayPumps. All of the PlayPumps I found were broken – some lasted up to a year, but others broke within days. Each school was given a phone number to call or SMS for repairs. All of them tried; none of them received a response. Photographed on an Emergency Fund grant from @magnumfoundation. #malawi #everydayafrica #yesthistooiseverydayafrica #failedaid #hillabecher #rip
