1. There’s a lot of freedom with internet culture as you can post whatever you want basically. However there is a lot of fear as people are afraid of receiving backlash for what they post.
2. I think it is working as is. If someone really doesn’t want anyone taking there work then whoever tries to reinvent and use there work gets taken down really fast or won’t be published.
3. I chose public domain because I want to share my work with everybody and if someone feels inspired why not let them use some of my work.
4. I used iMovie and added pictures to a song. It was frustrating as my laptop was giving me problems and wouldn’t add some pictures to the video. It came out pretty good in my opinion. I think I could’ve done better if I was given a month because I could’ve added some really nice affects.

EC: Feedback
1. I really did like the format of the class, first couple weeks was an introduction, then the next several worked on our art gallery then, the rest of the time was artist conversation. It was a good amount of work but not overwhelming.
2. I actually liked the making and presenting the art gallery. I liked how it didn’t have to be about traditional paintings. However I do wish you would’ve let us branch off into music.
3. For the SOA art gallery it wasn’t bad I just wasn’t really a big fan of having to write a small essay on each visit.
4. I actually liked the weekly art activities, I thought they were fun activities to do that I wouldn’t mind doing during my free time.
5. For the 7 ideas about art I thought it was interesting I learned something new each of those weeks.
6. I liked using tumblr to post our blogs. Tumblr is a pretty simple social media site that is easy to learn and when you get the hang of it, it’s very simple.
7. I wasn’t really to big a fan of wix as it was definitely difficult at first. Even after finishing the project I still wasn’t confident in my ability with wix. I think a powerpoint would’ve been a lot smoother and easier.
8. I did like using the class website and our own sites instead of using beachboard, it was a lot easier and faster, then having to log in, go to beachboard, and picking the class, etc.
9. Having no tests made me feel like I can relax and I do believe I comprehended the material better than if you would’ve gave us a test. For a test I know the material until after the test. After the test I forget all about it, and I don’t like to deal with the stress of studying for a test.
10. I believe the reason for not getting much class participation was that it was evening class. We didn’t get out till 5 and I think a lot of people were tired and wanted to go home as some people were there since 8 in the morning.
11. I really enjoyed your class and thought it was very interesting.

Art and my life
Art is something unique that probably will never die out. We experience art every single day and we don’t even notice. Theirs many different forms of art, such as paintings, drawings, and sculpting, or you have acting, dancing, music, and etc.
At first my perspective on art was that not everyone really cares for art and it’s just a small handful that do. During that time I was only thinking of paintings, drawings, and sculptures. I completely forgot that music, dance, and acting were apart of the arts. One thing I did learn in this class is that architecture is art. I was actually not aware that it was art.
I actually experience art every single day of my life without really realizing it. I listen to music every single day and have a huge passion for it. Sometimes I’ll look at lyrics from songs and try to decode them and see the meaning behind a few lines. I also like to make beats, and sometimes write lyrics of my own. Everytime I walk into a building I’m experiencing the architecture of the building.
For me I do art occasionally as I write lyrics or sometimes when I’m really bored I’ll do some sketches. I think everyone does art all the time in some way. In sports you here people talk about how one players style of play is like an art as it is so hard for someone else to play like that or copy that exact style. One example is Kobe Bryant. All basketball fans knows that Kobe had the best footwork to ever play the game. The stuff he did felt unreal. He drew inspiration from many of the greats he watched as a kid and made something new and completely different.
For practicing art I’ve mentioned music a lot, but another thing I like to do is photography. I love capturing moments in pictures, then a year or two later looking back at it and remembering the memories. After I look back at it then look at today and I’m like damn so much has changed in such a short period of time.

D7: Artist essay 7 (short story)
Artist: Ruben Cantoran
Exhibition: Prologue
Media: Paintings
Gallery: Max L. Gatov Gallery East
Website: N/A

The painting shows a drive at night around town but this captures a moment before everything goes wrong. The story begins Friday morning in late May following Paul. Paul is a senior in high school and has a few weeks before graduating. It all starts as a normal day as Paul drives to school and attends his classes. During break Paul’s friend Kaylee talks to him about a party she is having that night up in Santa Monica. Paul told her he would be there and after his conversation with Kaylee he texted all of his friends letting them know that a party is happening. Everyone responds that they will go. After school everyone went home took a shower and got ready to leave. Paul and his friends planned on heading out early so they can explore Los Angeles a little bit before going to the party. At four Paul went to go pick up his friends. Along the way to Los Angeles they were jamming out to music and having a good time. They’ve arrived in Los Angeles around five thirty and explored many parts of locations such as Rodeo Drive, Hollywood and Santa Monica. They hit Santa Monica around seven thirty got some food went to the beach and watched the sunset. They arrived at the party around eight forty five. The party was insane there were at least 150 to 175 people there. The party just rubbed off good vibes. Paul and his friends were having a really good time enjoying their last memories together as high school students. However around eleven thirty things start to take a turn. The cops showed up due to a noise complaint and when they showed up they realized a party was going on. They knocked on the door and said everyone had to leave or else they are getting arrested. Paul and his friends decided to walk around for a little bit till someone sobers up to drive home. What was a great day ended on kind of a down note but overall a good day.

Image 1: inland of San Diego looks a lot different than what people see online.
Image 2: back seat view of a 2018 camero isn’t too bad
Image 3: pizookie tuesdays is a must every Tuesday.
Image 4: Always have to make time to hangout with the boys
Image 5: my friends first time getting sushi.
Image 6: middle finger is always a mood when taking pictures.
1. I chose a story of what I did throughout the week as I probably do something different compared to everyone else.
2. I think I did alright, I could’ve done better but I just get caught up in the moment and don’t even think about taking a picture. I missed a lot of fun things I did that I just never took a picture of.
3. My best image I believe was image 3 as the flash brought out a very nice touch to the photo improving the quality.
4. Image 2 wasn’t the most clear but it shows how fast my friends camero was going so by looking at the image you get a sense of the speed that we were traveling at.
5. I would definitely take more pictures as that’s the one thing I do regret as I missed a lot of great pictures.
6. I have a bunch of photo stories I would like to tell as so much stuff is happening throughout my life that every week is a whole new story.

Artist: Vanessa Perez

Vanessa Perez is a student at California State University Long Beach. She aspires to be a children's book illustrator after she graduates from Long Beach. Perez likes to draw character designs and background paintings in her free time. One of her goals in life is to help children learn and make each one of them feel important. She likes to credit her professors for guiding her throughout college and preparing her for what she wants to do after college.
As far as Perez work it is not very big as you have to go up close to it to notice all the details and effort she put in. For her work she does not use dark colors at all. She uses bright colors to try and create a positive mood for when you look at her work. Perez makes her work look so smooth that if it was larger than it is you could possibly just slide across it. In her work, you can notice a great combination of straight and jagged lines throughout.
One of the reasons Perez wants to be a children's book illustrator is that she wants to create a positive impact on all children. She wants to make sure every child feels important and doesn’t deal with any mental health issues later on in life. Perez credits all the teachers she had in the past to inspire and influence her to be who she is today. She plans to make her art a career and have her work published in several children books.
One thing I can say is I respect Perez for wanting to do good and inspire kids to be the best they can be and hopefully inspire their dreams. One thing I will say about her work is that the vivid colors definitely drew me in as they just caught my eye compared to the other work in the gallery. Plus looking at her work it gave me memories of when I was a kid reading children books. Although her work in size may be small, it definitely leaves a pretty big impact on people.

Artist: Daniela Barbani
Exhibition: Why did the cougar cross the road
Media: Digital Media
Gallery: Merlino
Website: danielabarbani.com
Instagram: @artinthemachine
Daniela Barbani an artist who attends California State University Long Beach made a Digital media art of a cougar. Barbani has a real passion for animals which is why she chose to do her art on a cougar as she is trying to get a message across. Due to freeways animals get less space to move around and aren’t able to cross to the other side of the freeway. And the ones that do cross end up dying. She was inspired to create this due to a proposed 87 million dollar, 200 foot long bridge being proposed. If it gets approved it would create even less space for animals, and also make it more dangerous for them as well.
The piece by Barbani is kind of big so you can’t stand too close or you will miss some things. The piece is very colorful as the inside of the cougar switches different colors every few seconds. The colors were always vivid bright colors that it would always standout in a room. The outline of the cougar was white however so it blended in well with the body. One of the times the body of the cougar showed a free way, which represents how some cougars die crossing the freeway.
Barbanis inspiration for this art piece was her passion for animals, as she wants all animals to thrive and live well. She is trying to create a message that we need to stop building bridges and freeways because it keeps on cutting into nature’s land. Even though freeways and bridges do bring some good to us as it makes another path for us to get to our destination, it’s hurting nature and all the animals. Cougars are a dying population especially in the LA area due to some of them trying to cross the freeway at night, which is why she chose to use a cougar for her art piece.
For me I love the message that she is trying to give as I love animals and want all of them to thrive like she does. I do think we as a whole can do a better job to keep animals and nature in mind. It really is about the little things, like throwing your trash in a trash can and not on the ground, try not to use styrofoam, and less plastic. Overall I just really liked Barbanis message and her work was done very well.

D5: activity 5 (USU wedge)
All I’m changing is making the wedge a little bit wider so at least 2 people can cross through at the same time. One side can be going towards the school and the other side can be going towards the parking lot. The only trade off to me is just losing the tradition of everyone trying to squeeze through the wedge one at a time. In a year from now the current students will like it I believe because it’s less waiting. But I feel like a couple years later the students who experienced the wedge would miss it.

In this piece I drew the sky on the top half and a bunch of skulls on the bottom. I wanted this piece to show how close death is as we know our life can end at any moment unfortunately. The media I chose was sketching and I chose sketching cuz since it is colorless it gives a kind of lifeless aspect to the art. Which also brings up death. I do think I was successful in giving the idea of death. The experience was nice as I was allowed to drive whatever I wanted. This project didn’t mean a whole lot as an art piece I would like to do would probably take a very long time to complete and I wouldn’t have been able to do it in just a week.

Artist: Chloe Krsteski
Exhibition: Fine Line
Media: Wires
Gallery: Max L. Gatov Gallery West
Website: https://cpk.myportfolio.com
Instagram: N/A
Chloe Krsteski is currently a fifth year student at California State University Long Beach who participated in the exhibit Fine Line. The exhibit seems to have the common variable that it’s about death. This was honestly a nice theme for the week of Halloween as it is usually known to be a spooky and scary time of year. The piece Wired was made by Krsteski in 2017 made of cable wires.
The piece by Krsteski isn’t small, but however it wasn’t huge either. It was a fairly big skull that she made however. She used only black cable wires to really emphasize the idea of death into the audiences head. The piece was two dimensional, however with the correct lighting you can see a big shadow of the skull behind the actual piece, which makes it look like the skull is creeping up on you.
The symbolism of this piece is how we as a society are so reliant on technology as it seems that we are so occupied my technology that we don’t notice anything around us. Krsteski mentions that with the rise of technology we have become lazier and argue that technology is a way we become more efficient to hide the fact that we are lazy now. Therefore she argues that we are dying at the hands of technology. You can make an argument about this as with an increase of technology car accidents have increased due to people looking at their phones while driving. You can also argue that with the increase of technology people have exercised less which does decrease our life expectancy.
The reason I chose to talk about Krsteski as her work reminded me about Halloween and I was in the Halloween mood as well. I do believe she is speaking some truth to some extent on how we are dying at the hands of technology, however you can argue technology as done many wonders for the world help us out in life especially in the field of medicine. I do agree with how we as a society are becoming more lazy with the increase of technology. For example we are making self driving cars. Teenagers are always so excited to get their license and start driving around with their friends and stuff. However in like 20 years teenagers will not need to get a license as we will not need to drive anymore as the cars will drive themselves.

D3: art essay 3
Artist: Destiny Randall
Exhibition: Hanging by a thread
Media: dyeing, weaving, sewing, crocheting
Gallery: Max L. Gatov Gallery West
Website: N/A
Instagram: N/A
Destiny Randall an artist who attends California State University Long Beach was one of three artists who participated in the exhibit Hanging by a Thread. Hanging by a Thread is about the difficulties of mental health and how art can be used as a way to escape the pain some people go through. Just as fabric can be a way to be used to provide warmth and comfort to a human, Randall and the other artists want to show art can be used the same way for the mind. They like to show how art is similar to life, as life is a huge process, art is the same way a huge to achieve you’re final product. In life it is a huge process to leave our mark on the world.
The work that was presented in the exhibit showed a huge amount of colors. A majority of the colors that were shown were bright and something that just stands out. Another thing about the work being shown was it was big You couldn’t miss it, however if you go up to the quilts and other work, you can see how well everything was made. All of the work would look like it was manufactured by a big company. I was impressed by the work as they must’ve spent a lot of time working on it. I could also tell they used quality materials on their projects and probably spent a lot of money to make it.
Destiny Randalls work is about mental health in the exhibit Hanging by a Thread. The idea of using fabric gives a message that art is a way to help comfort you and help you deal with a difficult situation as you can find some peace to some extent with art. She likes to use bright warm colors to give a sense of calming and happiness in a way. Mental health is a huge topic in America and the world as many people are going through something everyday and we all can agree that our mental health is just as important as our physical health. Randall wants to give a way to escape from that pain and help people become healthier mentally.
I chose this gallery as I got a feeling of comfort when I walked in and looked at the quilts. It reminded me of winter time and my childhood as I would curl up under the blankets and watch movies, play video games or whatever. I like how she uses her work to talk about mental health which I think is important. People go through stuff all the time and it takes a hit on people’s mental health which leads to suicide rates going up. Through her work she is showing that you can help your mental health by giving time for yourself.

D3: art activity 3
For my speech actions project I decided to use the medium of illustration as I feel like it is extremely underrated now of days. More people are using photography or paintings for showing there opinion. Although my drawing is not the best I do believe it gets the point across. I chose to talk about climate change as I show a path that can lead two different ways. One we start taking care of our planet and make the earth look more green. Or we can choose to ignore it and continue with our daily lives as our world would evolve meaning more building and less trees and plants. If I did this project again I feel like I would use photography as a way to express an opinion of mine on a current situation.

For my zine I did it about myself. I basically talked about the stuff that I’m interested in or things that made me who I am today such as high school college basketball etc. I feel like my zine is pretty boring one for lack of colors and two I’m just not an interesting person if I’m being honest I’m just like any normal college student nothing really makes me stand out. Next time I do make a zine I feel like I should do it about something else as there really isn’t too much about me too describe.

D2: artist essay 2
Artist: Hanjialin Bao
Exhibition: Gui
Media: Graphic Design, sketches, paintings
Gallery: Max L. Gatov Gallery West
Website: hanjialinbao.com
Instagram: @amber_baoo
Hanjialin Bao is a student at California State University Long Beach who is of Chinese descent. Bao has always dreamed of applying traditional Chinese art techniques to modern American art. She loves to use Chinese myths and legends in her artwork as she has always been fascinated by the stories and wants to share them with everyone. Bao is very passionate about fashion and the modern cultures of America. Bao has been influenced by Chinese paintings, makeup, and clothes from the Beijing opera, as well as the art on the kites which have played a huge role in her artwork.
Bao’s artwork always represents Chinese tradition, however it always looks like it has a modern twist which separates it from other Chinese artwork other people have used. One thing I have noticed that in all of her paintings she has used the color red which is a very important color to China as it represents prosperity and happiness. When Bao draws hair for in her sketches you really notice the detail as you can see each strand of hair. In her paintings she leaves the background white a good amount of the time. This is actually fairly common in Asian art.
It is no secret that Bao’s art is similar to Chinese traditional paintings as that is where she gained a huge inspiration to become an artist. For her art however her goal is to combine illustrations, animation, and graphic designs all into one art piece. A big reason she got into sharing her artwork was to share the chinese culture which you can see in her work. As some of her work shows the dragon dances, traditional chinese clothes, etc.
I chose to write about Bao as my grandfather came from China, so this artist I felt like I already have a connection with her even though I have never met her. I really liked her artwork as you can tell she put in a lot of time and effort into her work. What drew me in was the chinese art style because I haven’t seen anyone recently apply any chinese style into art. Most of the time I see really old traditional chinese paintings so it was nice to see someone feel inspired by Asian cultures.

D1: Art essay 1
Artist: Sienna Browne
Exhibition: You Are You’re Your
Media: Painting, Sculpture
Gallery: Max L. Gatov Gallery West
Website: Siennabrowneart.com
Instagram: @siennabrowne
Sienna Browne is an artist at California State Long Beach who is in her fourth year of the Drawing and Painting BFA program. Outside of her artwork Browne is a lifeguard, a middle school youth leader at Rock Harbor Church, and Instructional Student Assistant for the department at California State Long Beach. She gained a lot of her creativity when she was a child as she was homeschooled, which gave her the space to express herself creatively without any criticism. Sienna Browne uses art as a way to re-experience emotions and pain from the past to create something that is unique. Her work typically combines aesthetic and compelling material handling with nauseating imagery and themes.
Sienna Brownes paintings are typically on the larger size for art as majority of her painting are 60 x 30 inches. For her work you need to take a step back so you can view the whole picture as she has a lot going on in her paintings. They consist of an abundance of colors as it sometimes feels she is using a completely different color in every painting. Her paintings are built off of many shapes and lines which in turn makes some familiar objects such as trees and animals after you look at the art for a second. What is awesome about Brownes work is that all of her paintings are unique in her own ways, as some paintings you can easily understand what the meaning is, while others you need to think a little bit deeper to understand.
Sienna Browne mentions that when she uses art as a way to re-experience some emotions she has had in the past, which is why majority of her art is abstract as she is painting her feelings. A big part of her life has been religion, so she likes to include some reference to religion in a good amount of her paintings. Identity is a huge inspiration for Browne as growing up she struggled to find her true identity especially when she transitioned from being homeschooled to going to middle school and high school with a bunch of people she didn’t know.
I chose to write about Sienna Browne because art felt very powerful to me, as I was just attracted to all the different uses of colors. I really like her art work and I am amazed how it feels like she never reuses the same color again in other paintings. I can relate to Browne as Catholicism is a part of my life and how I struggle to find my identity. I struggle to find my identity because it can be tough to find out who you truly are and what your purpose is at such a young age, since we have only lived what we hope is a really small part of our lives. One thing I really respect is that Browne will paint what she wants and doesn’t care if she’ll receive backlash for it or not. It can be hard to do that as sometimes you want to please everyone, but in Art she puts herself first which I admire.

This experience was very interesting. I wouldn’t say it was easier or harder than I expected but different. It was kind of frustrating to paint with no subject as this is the first time I have done abstract painting. I was at first confused on what to do but after a little bit I started to get into it. Compared to other abstract paintings I’d say mine is pretty bad but I’m not really upset with that due to this being my first time making an abstract painting. Overall I’d say it was fun making this and wouldn’t mind doing it again

This was my first time spray painting and I was surprised at how much fun it was to spray paint. I was also impressed at how legible I was able to make my name look as I thought I would be really bad at this. However I wasn’t able to go to Venice this week, I hope sometime in the future I will be able to show off my work up there. I definitely plan on spray painting later on as it is really fun.
