It had been almost a day since Ruby had asked the forbidden question. The question about Ren's birthday. They had reacted so negative, yelling in such a scary way that she was sure they were mad at her. So she gave space, fleeing the area whenever they came near. And now, hoping that it had been enough time, Ruby approached. "Ren?" Her voice was hesitant and meek. "I'm sorry. About yesterday. I didn't mean to upset you. I really didn't!"

&   it was quite the innocent question that would prompt such a seething reaction too,   although ren hadn’t intended to in the slightest. they were so often gentle, kind, patient, such abhorrent emotions most likely looked dastardly on their face, didn’t it   ?   normal sombre smile twisted into bestial snarl, and exposed fanged enamel. compassionate, amaranthine eyes of understanding turn’t to bright slits, while ren breathed out darkened cloud of threatened smoke. instinct had taken over in a mere second, ren’s fight or flight responses triggering.   ‘   no   …   i   —   ’   dragon’s jaw clenched tightly, brows furrowing as their eyes became tight and glassy, pressing their lips into a thin line to stop them from wobbling. ren raised a shaky hand to shroud the upper half of their face, like they so often did when they had a headache, but this time for a completely different reason.

‘   —   i’m so sorry.   ’   the words came out of ren fragmented, as if you could hear them shattering as they tumbled out. they laid no blame on anyone who asked, but normally warned caution to anyone who dug too deep. ren was a being composed of secrets that would never see the light of day, and while that particular one was inconsequential, the last time someone had asked that question nora had received the same scathing response. like a dragon guarding something deep, deep with the cavernous castle depths, they had no business trying to drag the past back up when they were doing fine without it.   ‘   you   —   it was   …   i’m sorry.   ’   the apology came out a rasping plea, pain warping the quality of the words until it became unmistakable why ren was covering their eyes.   ‘   i didn’t mean to yell at you.   just   …   bad memories.   ’

after a few quiet moments they sniffed, turning away from ruby and wiping at their eyes with their wrist, unable to meet her eyes.

‘   it’s passed.   i’m nineteen.   ’

“My inhaler?“ She was perplexed at first. How did her inhaler get into Yang’s locker to begin with? Taking the device that was held out to her, Ruby held it close for a moment before pocketing it. 

“But why, Yang? It’s been like 4 year since I last had an attack. I’m totally fine! Fit at a fiddle, see?“ Just to try and prove her point, Ruby sped around with her semblance. Rose petals went every which way, most of them landing on Yang though. “We don’t need to worry about my asthma anymore!“

Ship fail? No worries.

Look, sometimes you try out a romance ship and it TANKS. It’s dead in the water before anything can happen. Flirting fails, there’s no gushy moments, no sexy times, no za-za-zing. My muse just doesn’t feel it, your muse just doesn’t feel it. Or, it’s only one-sided and the rejected party feels WEIRD now. But that doesn’t mean we have to make it awkward and cancel all rp attempts! There is NOTHING wrong with keeping them platonic, having them bicker, or seeing them become some other kind of relationship, etc. The RPC puts SO MUCH pressure on rom ships as being the ONLY way you can interact with muses, even if the muns still want to write their characters together somehow.

Now, if you only pursued my muse in the first place for a romance, and ignore me because of that, yes, I’m not going to lie—that hurts & it feels gross. But if you just need time to reroute your muse, I get that too!! But there’s no need to feel “weird” about it.

“I’m sorry I’m sorry.“ Ruby said, the laugh still very clear in her voice. She walked over, reaching into her pocket to pull out a handkerchief. She started to keep on on her after the fall. A sort of way to remember Weiss. “Here, use this. And don’t tilt your head back. Dad always said that wasn’t a good thing to do with nose bleeds.“

Ruby couldn’t stop herself from laughing. The frisbee hit him square in the face, apparently unexpectedly despite how hard she had been throwing it. “Jaune, why didn’t you use your aura?” She walked over, holding her stomach as it began to ache from so much laughter.
