orpheus saying "to the world we dream about" and then turning and raising his cup to the audience when he says "and the one we live in now." fourth wall break of all time. reminding the audience that this story isn't just about hadestown, but is also about our world. stepping back into reality, just for a brief moment, to acknowledge both the joy and pain of living in that world. it is so deeply compassionate and real and it breaks my heart every time.

If Hadestown has a moral, she says, then it’s “you have to try, you have to have hope, not because success is a given – it’s not. Orpheus fails. We heroicise” – here she breaks off to apologise that jet lag has led to her making up words – “we heroicise Orpheus not because he succeeds but because he tries, and that endeavour alone is worthwhile. How to live, and not merely survive, is to believe things could change.”
Anaïs Mitchell on her musical Hadestown: 'I worked on it so long I was afraid I'd never make another record'

My theory for ride the cyclone is that the St Cassian chamber choir in the show is like Virgil, the rat thats going to chew through Karnak's wires. He admits he's just a rat he gave a name and a bass. The choir's just that, anthropomised corpses, idea of these children he got from reading their fortunes.
That’d explain why the kids didn’t remember Jane Doe, Karnak didn’t read her fortune. Also, as soon as Karnak dies the children start singing in unison again. they’re our version of the kids now. And what we’d like them to do as audience is give a “lesson” to their death and tell us carpe diem, life’s just a ride and its everything you love and everything you dreamed and everything that seems so oh so terrifying.
