Everything to Know Before Coming for Your Dental Implants Appointment
Have you fallen victim to a missing tooth? Dental implants are an excellent solution for you as it restores full functionality to your teeth. If you already have an appointment booked for dental implants, it’s important to know what to expect before the procedure. A dental implant is a titanium rod inserted into the gums, acting as the root of the tooth. This restores the ability to chew and alleviates pain in the gums. Consult your dentist at The Perio Centre before booking an appointment if you haven’t already. Dr. Adam Ohayon is a periodontist in Oshawa that provides services like gum grafting and alleviation for any periodontal needs.
Here is everything you need to know before your dental implant appointment.
Healing Process
You should book a few weeks off to recover, as the average downtime is 2 weeks. This is the general timeline of healing:
24 hours after: Because of the numbing for the appointment, you will not feel any pain within the first 24 hours. However, there may be some bleeding from the gums that should subside in 1-2 hours. When your numbing wears off, you can experience pain and discomfort, for which you can take prescribed painkillers.
1-3 days after: pain will reach its highest and begin to ease away. Stick with soft foods and avoid exercising during this period. It’s critical to keep icing during this step to keep the swollen period short.
1 week after: You can now begin to eat more firm foods but still not crunchy foods like chips. You can start to partake in physical activity again, and in terms of cleaning, brush like normal but avoid brushing the implant directly.
2 weeks after: At this point, you would go back for a follow-up appointment to make sure everything is healing correctly. You can return to your daily routines and diet, though the area may still feel tender.
Follow-up Appointments
Going for an invasive procedure requires a follow-up appointment to ensure everything is healing correctly. It’s typically scheduled for at least 2 weeks after your appointment. During this appointment, the dentist will check for any bleeding or swelling in the gums and any signs of infection. Expect your periodontist to take x-rays of your mouth to inspect the root of the implant as well.
After that initial appointment, you may be asked to schedule another appointment in 3-6 months. If not, when you go for a cleaning, your dentist will also check on the implant.
