mourning

the doll sits on the floor, shuddering slightly. it's remembering her again, the woman it knew before the witch. despite what one may expect, she was a kind woman. one the doll would liken to a setting sun.

she was warm, and safe, and bright. but that wonderful light burned out much too quickly, leaving only darkness. leaving the doll. all alone.

some nights, like this one, the doll remembers her with shocking clarity. she was so kind, as kind as the witch, and was the first to treat it so well. the doll feels guilty remembering her like this, it feels ungrateful for the effort the witch goes through, and guilty for not remembering that woman better.

it's been a year since she passed.

the doll cries into the witch's hair, and she comforts it. it's going to be a long night. but the sun will rise again in the morning.

IT SPINS! Handmade electric motor! Entirely out of wire! They said it couldn't be done, but I have proven -- it merely shouldn't be done!

Photos don't really capture how ridiculously complicated this thing was to build, so I managed to film myself assembling the components too! Very proud of that.

In total, I've been working on this project on and off for roughly two years. This motor is my third version, though I went through something like seven designs of the commutator section (not counting how many failures it took to build a working example of a given design). I'm very proud of getting this to work at all.

Some close-up photos of all the components:

Six-way commutator. As the motor spins, this delivers electricity to only the correct pair of magnets at a time, leaving the other four off.

Magnet coils. I wound these by hand from very thin insulated wire. The center is a spiral of thicker insulated wire (darker orange) that protects the thin stands from the steel core and then wraps around the outside to hold everything in place.

Spring-loaded arms. These deliver electricity from the stationary frame into the rotating axle. They also have to hinge up out of the way or else there's no room to fit the rotor in place during assembly.

its a decorative feature yes, that's right, im glad you got that part. but could you at least try to pay attention? bubbles need some kind of an imperfection to form, its why when you look at a full glass of spirte or beer or anything fizzy the bubbles all stem from the same hairline cracks- that or it's just a little dirty. what your soul gem is doing right now is providing all kinds of little cracks and crevaces, all kinds of "nucleation sites" for bubbles to form which allows my drink to offgas more aromatic comp- oh for gods sake could you- not on the carpet at least?

Perhaps it's because she drinks it so often.

we're so tired. whatever chronic illness we have going on leaves us always feeling exhausted and like shit. we can fix one symptom but it makes the others worse.

we only have two more assignments for this semester and then we have a ridiculously long break to recover but just working on these assignments is making us want to either kill ourselves or just shut down.

we want to just be a pet or doll or something
