Saturnalia was the Roman festival of Saturn, the god of time, generation, dissolution, abundance, wealth, agriculture, periodic renewal, and liberation. Saturn was also known for devouring his own children.

Saturnalia was a huge celebration with a huge banquet, sacrifices and gift giving. It is one of the precursors to the modern Christmas festival.
