Punk 101: Lace Code

Lace Code is one of my favorite things, and so it happens to be the Punk 101 post that I’ve worked on the most. I’m sorry (I know I said at some point band shirts were up next 😬)

To start, it is important to talk about where Lace Code came from, and where it is now. Using lace colors on your boots (doc martins specifically) started with London Skinheads in the 70’s. Their white and red laces were typically symbols of white supremacy, and in some groups those laces had to be earned.

I’ll eventually do another post on Skinheads, but for now all you need to know is that the Skinhead subculture is historically known for being racist and violent. I always feel the need to point something out when talking about Skinheads: NOT EVERY BALD OR SHAVEN PUNK IS A SKINHEAD!

Later on in the 80’s, Lace Code became a popular way for many Punk subculture to communicate things such as their stance on racism and their sexuality. Now, in many areas, Lace Code is dead, but not everywhere!

Lace Code applies to ladder laced black combat boots (typically people wear docs). Each color represents something different, and this can vary by area, so it is important to check your local scene

How to ladder lace:

Traditional ladder laces are shown on the left, and quick release ladder laces are shown on the right. And here is a site that goes step by step

What do The Colors Mean?

(Colors mean different things in different places. These are the most common meanings and the ones I personally know - check your local scene to ensure its not different for your area)

Orange: Anti-Racist // Anti-ICE // No Meaning

Yellow: Anti-Racist

Green: Environmentalist // Peace // No Meaning

Blue: Killed a Cop

Purple: Queer // Gay

Pink: Feminist // Queer // Gay

Black: No Meaning

Patterned: No Meaning

Red: Nazi // Neo-Nazi // Anarchist

White: White Supremacy // Nazi // Neo-Nazi

Note: no one can stop you from wearing whatever you want, but in some areas you should be mindful because there are still people who follow Lace Code, and if youre seen with red or white ladder laces, you might be in for it

2nd Note: Its always advised that you dont wear ladder laces when traveling if you are unfamiliar with the Lace Code of the area you are traveling to for safety purposes

First of all

Ann: as basic as it sounds, Taylor Swift. Specifically she would be the person to drop everything when Taylor started releasing the T version of her discography. Either swift or del ray tbh, i could also see her liking standard city pop too, blast it in her room

Yusuke: shoegaze. He would argue it gives him inspiration for his music, everyone else thinks it sounds like a bow dragged across a sawblade

Makoto: funnily enough i think she'd really like RnB, she'd only listen to it alone but i think that's what her vibe would be overall

Akechi: i wanna say classical, specifically a lot of Hayden or Shostakovich, i actually think that he would listen to video game OSTS because it's proven to help a person focus on their tasks, so he would listen to it while he's working on a case/schoolwork

I was playing through madarames palace and noticed something about it and the potential tie to yusuke (i may be grabbing at straws here but hear me out here)

The safe rooms in palaces all briefly shift cognition when it loads, and madarames is no different, but u noticed that the room that it briefly shifts to looks like yusuke's room; and then i took a closer look and there's the same paint splatters on the floor? I'm 90% it's yusuke's room, which makes me feel very conflicted because that means it was the only safe place; and iirc he mentions hiding away in there during his social link when they revisit the shack

I could be wrong here but i want to go on more rants about my favorite persona characters and yusuke is just like me fr so i wanted to start with that

I'm gonna talk about the songs "another ideology" and "the ideal and the real" because the ties are cool if you're looking out for them (although i could just be yelling about things people already knew but y'know what that's okay)

BTW ROYAL SPOILERS FOR THIRD SEMESTER (i know the game is almost 3yrs old but still)

Okay so firstly, "ideal and the real" is Takuto Marukis theme overall before the third semester, it plays in his social link and when you're meeting with him. It's in a major key, I think G? Idk I'm not in theory yet but don't come for me but

His theme gives this sense of "I'm here to help!" And "I'm a casual counselor" and has even a quirky theme to it, you don't suspect anything of him.

Until the third semester, where you open up to the whole school false reality thing, and "another ideology" plays.

I was listening to "another ideology" the other day and noticed that if you're paying attention to the song, it's pretty much the inverse to "ideal and the real" which can give you a tell that Maruki is behind the shit that's going on.

The inherent "chorus"(?) Of the song, is a minor version of the former song, the strings part in the ideal and the real (jump to 1:20)

Contrasting this to the chorus of another ideology (1:13), it's not only just the mimic to the strings, but the underlying bass line as well. If you pick it up once you can't un-hear it imo, and it's a huge tell to the events of the third semester, and how it gives this vibe of "something isn't right here" compared to IATR.

I found it extremely interesting and i will happily do this again with other osts, i might make an ask blog on it if this takes off.
