HOMEWORLD: Hermes
FAMILY: Aeolus Ryder (father), Mera Ryder (mother; deceased)

HEIGHT: 5′7″
WEIGHT: 130 pounds
DISTINGUISHING MARK(S): Small scar on the inside of her right wrist, a tattoo of the constellation Canis Major on her left shoulder blade.
CLOTHING: This is very much a case of ideal style vs affordable style; typically she wears casual and plain clothes (e.g. a t-shirt, pants, boots,) but she was always been a bigger fan of clothing worn by more richer people. Let me tell you, girl LOVES her sparkles and dresses.
INTERIOR
FIVE POSITIVE TRAITS: Intelligent, Dutiful, Empathetic, Respectful, & Passionate
FIVE NEGATIVE TRAITS: Impulsive, Worried, Regretful, Insecure, & Overly Critical of herself
EARLIEST MEMORY: Sitting on her mother’s lap, the older Ryder woman braiding her hair, while Peia told her about the things she had learned at class that day.
PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT: Being accepted for the ES Kolbe mission; she saw it as her chance to redeem herself and show everyone that she was, still, a good person.
HOPES: To see more of the stars in her vast universe, to make something of herself and make her father proud.
FEARS: Letting her father down, also letting her mother down, Never being able to reform herself after the bad things she has done, Small enclosed spaces.
MISC.
FAVORITE FOOD: Not necessarily favourite food as in “I could eat this forever” but more of a “this reminds me of comfort and warmth” kind of food; dark chocolate. She and her father would share a small bar while on the roof and it brings her comfort now.
DREAM JOB: She loves being an astronomer on the Kolbe but ultimately would love to be one of those people who practically live in observatories and spends their days watching and mapping stars using the telescopes.
DRINKS?: Occasionally
USES DRUGS?: Has never used drugs but would be lying if she said she wasn’t interested.
GAMBLES?: Nope.
WANTS TO GET MARRIED?: Absolutely.
WANTS KIDS?: Depends on who her partner is, but she does like the idea of having lil’ babies around, especially with new worlds and stars for them to discover.
FIVE SONG PLAYLIST: “My Mistake” by Gabrielle Aplin, “Never Enough” by Loren Allred, “Day by Day” by Perlo, “Swan” by Nicole Dollanganger, & “Sleepover” by Hayley Kiyoko.

“No, by all means, keep talking. Do you mind if I sit?” Leo asked, raising her eyebrows in question as she waited for a response. She was finishing her shift at the command deck and, not yet able to switch her brain off enough for sleep, had gone seeking company, though she didn’t expect to find any. It served as a nice surprise to find somebody awake, alert, and, if context clues were to be believed, willing to chat. “You might be the first person writing down that our Orange Dwarf Star even exists. It’s an important job, right? Least I can do if offer to grab you a cup of coffee”
Tumblr media
Peia didn’t hesitate, answering her question with an enthusiastic nod, letting go of her notebook long enough to gesture to the seat next to her; a silent please sit. Company, especially at such a late (early? neither? it was hard to tell in space) time was hard to come by.
“It’s mostly just some notes; it might not even be that but it’s important to guess. Being hopeful is what we’re known for, I suppose.” She took pause for a moment, the idea of some coffee was a good one; she was here, first to observe, but mostly because it was easier to sleep at night after she had done both her job and some stargazing. “Coffee sounds great, if it’s not too much to ask.”
With a light shake of her head, tucking some hair behind her ear as she did so, Peia added; “I hope they remembered to bring enough along, it seems like we’re all owls on this ship.”

coradewit‌:
The moment Cora heard of their approach to the planet, she tried to gain more information. Information no one had. She knew this expedition would lead her to many places she wouldn’t know anything about but knowing more would’ve been helpful in preparing. So when she heard the other speak of a theory she had, Cora perked up from her seat. “Hmm.” She hummed as her eyes narrowed, thinking for a second. “Interesting.”
Getting up, she stretched and ran her fingers through her messy curls. “No, no. Don’t apologize. How about you tell me more instead?” She requested, now taking a seat closer to the young woman, giving her all of her attention. Frankly, Cora wasn’t a super brain. She didn’t know everything the galaxy could offer but she knew how to keep up and she most definitely was willing to learn.
Tumblr media
Her use of the word interesting flooded Peia with memories -- the corrugated roof turning cold under her, the blanket placed around her shoulders by familiar hands, the way her father would pat her back every time she spoke --, ones that caused her to smile absent mindedly to herself. No one tended to ask, so she could keep them safely tucked away in her head.
She watched the other stretch, the way her fingers combed deftly through her hair, and Peia wondered about her, the story behind her being there, the reason she had taken flight on the ES Kolbe; but it was always too personal of a question, and although she didn’t shy away from speaking to others, she didn’t think it practical to ask.
The offer for more information brought a small smile upon Peia’s lips; when people asked, it meant she could relay information she had learnt from her father. It felt like keeping his memory alive within her. “It’s to do with UV light, y’see --” Peia offered the other a look at her notes, though she wasn’t sure if they were worth reading for someone who didn’t have a background in astronomy, “-- it indicates that a planet is liveable, let’s us know that we won’t, y’know, have our DNA destroyed.”

adorasecho‌:
“Well, maybe – look at this.” Echo zooms in on the image. Contrary to how it works on TV, the image only gets blurrier, rather than more defined. Even so, she points at a darker area on the planet. “That might – might – be a canyon. Canyons usually mean water. Water sometimes means life… at least at one point. This could turn out to be an Old Earth situation.”
Echo – and indeed, most of the ‘verse – has never been near Old Earth, but they all know the story. Once a thriving, human-covered planet, now a dead piece of rock, with little water and an unstable atmosphere, that no one would ever want to live on again. Evidence of humanity’s time there remains, but no one has lived there in centuries.
“I’ve been calling it Mustard Seed. I’m not sure how they go about picking names usually – I know Antigone was named after the ancient Greek character, but who decided it’d be a good idea to name their new planet after a teenage girl who kills herself is anybody’s guess.”
(Though given what Antigone’s residents have done to their planet, it was a bit morbidly appropriate.)
Tumblr media
With Echo’s urging, Peia leaned in slightly to get a better look at the image. She could see what was being pointed out to her, though with the combination of a distant photo and the blurriness from zooming in, it merely looked like a smudge to her. Her mouth ticked down for a moment, not sure what was special about said smudge but when Echo explained it, her slight frown flipped, tugging upwards on one side in a crooked little smile. That was exciting.
“Canyons are good.” she reiterated, though the mention of Old Earth might not have boded well; the place was a desolate rock now, no longer it’s former glory filled self. Still, this planet was new and they -- they being the human race -- hadn’t gotten their grubby paws on it just yet. “The Third Frontier means another chance, so maybe it’ll be like Old Earth but in a we’re not repeating our mistakes for a... third time this time way.”
At the mention of Antigone, Peia felt herself tense up; a string of nerves turning to rock for a moment, but she had to remind herself; this wasn’t their old planets, she couldn’t hold grudges against them forever. Though, she couldn’t help the slight sharp intake of her breath.
“It seems Greek mythology is all the rage when it comes to names.” she offered by way of explanation. She couldn’t explain why the colonisers of Antigone had chosen that name. Perhaps they were just running out. “My name is actually from Greek Mythology too. Cassiopeia, she was a queen.”
Mulling it over for a moment, Peia added; “Echo is also a name from Greek Mythology too.”

Ever since she had been old enough to hold a book -- the ones created to mimic what had been the norm on Old Earth, her father had told her --, Peia had found herself gaining a wide array of papercuts. It was a testament to the hurried fashion that she would flip pages, eager to read on, no matter what the subject might have been, and it was a trait of hers that had become known in her house and throughout her peers. They would notice the girl first from her messy blonde ponytail and then the assortment of medical tape and band aids that littered her fingers.
As far as Peia had found, the kolbe didn’t have many of the Old Earth relics, the library highly digitalised, but Peia still had her old notebooks, the ones she should to take her notes in, but also the ones where she recorded her thoughts and feelings. It was a makeshift journal, with her regrets and fears and joys jotted in margins next to physics equations and hypothesis.
Her fervent jotting had brought her to the med room now, her index finger nipping from what must have been two or three little wounds, in need of some band aids, or even a way to clean them, when she saw the other person turn, their voice stern and not at all friendly. It caused Peia to stop for a moment before she spoke.
“I’m sorry,” she said, softly. “I, um, I just needed something for my hand. I didn’t mean to bother you.”
It was the best she could muster, feeling entirely like she was intruding. “I’ll just get something and go.”
Tumblr media
All was quiet in the med room, and for only the second time in about a month Jupiter was blessedly alone, without a guard buzzing over their shoulder or demanding something or another. It was annoying. Just because they’d been convicted of taking defective clones apart and selling their parts didn’t mean Jupiter was about to start taking them apart again.
Besides, they doubted anyone onboard the Kolbe was looking to buy an overpriced organ behind the UP’s back anyway.
That was what really stung. Some of these people had done way worse than they did. Just because they were making some extra profit behind the government’s back didn’t warrant a sentence that lasted a quarter of a lifetime.
Behind them, the door hissed open, and Jupiter tore their eyes away from the crew’s medical records, swivelling around in their seat to fix the newcomer with a decidedly unamused expression. “Yes. What is it this time?”

Peia hadn’t meant to eavesdrop; she had taken to exploring the ship when she wasn’t needed elsewhere, in the little downtime that she was afforded, Peia wanted to get to know her way around the exploration vessel. The floors and walls were nothing like the streets of Hermes, she had been able to navigate her way around her city before she could do much else, and that expertise had only gotten better as she grew older, never once having to think about which side street to take or which alley to cut down to get to where she was going.
The kolbe, however, was new territory, and she had to navigate her way through the similar corridors to be able to find where she was going. She could locate her room, the observation decks, and the science wing easily, but everywhere else might as well have been an ever changing labyrinth. That was how she found herself upon the pilot, his first two words audible enough to catch her attention, enough to cause her to drift into the room, her hands wringing around themselves in casual nerves, when he spoke more, and though she suspected his words were for himself, she couldn’t help but respond.
“We really will.” she agreed with him, her voice not loud enough to be at normal speaking volume but also not quiet enough to be a whisper. “I’d say a lot of people are nervous about that -- myself included -- because it’s really testing us to see if we have the, uh, the --” she shrugged, trying to find the right words; “The skills we said we had. I assume you, as head pilot, are leading by example?”
Tumblr media
“One week?” Cato repeated to himself, standing in front of a window and staring out into the endless abyss of space. “One week before we get to test everyone’s worth,” he muttered, taking in a deep breath, before exhaling slowly. It had a been month, and Cato was yet to trust anyone aboard this ship.

captain-r-yuu‌:
A month in space and Rena had yet to grasp the concept of a ‘good night’s rest’ tucked away in her quarters. It wasn’t that she couldn’t sleep, it was that she didn’t want to sleep, her dream of becoming a captain of her own exploration ship finally coming true after two decades of relentless dedication - any dreams she had in slumber barely scratched the surface of the euphoria she felt day in, day out for the past thirty days.
Still, wandering around a giant vessel full of criminals and displaced guards alike wasn’t exactly a smart nor safe choice for a newly indoctrinated captain, and so she made her usual rounds, trying to use a disciplined routine to put her mind at ease long enough to catch some Z’s. It was only when she had passed a familiar reflection in one of the ship’s observatory wings - Cassiopeia, if she had the back of her head correct - that Rena came to a halt, silently watching an otherwise harmful activity as the girl scribbled away in a notebook. That is, until she spoke up, causing one of Rena’s delicate brows to arch in tepid surprise as her arms crossed over her chest instinctively.
“Don’t apologize,” came out first, a little too harsh for someone who wasn’t angry. Rena blinked before adjusting her tone, taking a few steps forward without hovering, gaze shifting past Cassiopeia and onto the dark yellow hue of Planet #67B in the far distance.
“It must be hard to be certain of something so far away - so how do you know?” she continued, her curiosity in the astronomer’s diagnosis genuine as Rena glanced over at her, welcoming any distraction other than sleep.
Tumblr media
It was the tone that caught Peia’s attention at first, her mouth parting ever so slightly in another apology, as funny as that was, but there didn’t seem to be a hint of anger on her face; simply a raised eyebrow that Peia hoped was a sign of her piqued interest. It was obvious to anyone who had decided to board the ship that the woman in her presence now was the Captain, the woman who ran the show and that was extremely frightening.
Peia wasn’t a timid girl, not entirely, and her past had changed her, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t fall under a bout of nerves with not only an authority figure but the authority figure spoke to her. She was new to this whole process, the only high ranking people she had ever worked for being a few shady shop owners, and it felt almost like a privilege to have gotten her attention, one to one. It was so shocking to the girl, that when her hypothesis was question, she forgot how to speak for a moment.
Her fingers curled around the edges of her notebook, the buckled pages bending under them as she offered a shrug. Her shrug was her first answer, though Captain Yuu only offered a glance towards her, and it was hardly an answer anyway, a shrug had no science behind it, and she certainly hadn’t been given a place on the ES Kolbe just to shrug.
“It’s more of a hypothesis.” she finally said, her voice weirdly smooth despite the hummingbird that had taken refuge in her chest. “See, we’re close to the planet -- Planet #67B -- and since Orange Dwarf Stars give out less UV radiation, it seemed like a likely scenario that there would be some around here. But you’re right,” she nodded, shifting slightly in her seat. “It is difficult to be certain from this far away, perhaps in the coming days I’ll have a more concrete answer for you -- if you’re interested, that is -- and some consultation with others wouldn’t hurt.”
Although her heart still raced, Peia felt calmed by her part of the discussion, the topic of solar systems never failing to put her at ease. “Mostly, I’m just hopeful that if my guess is correct, then we’ve found somewhere to people could call home, and isn’t that why we’re here?”

drastrea‌:
Sofía was tired, pouring over notes of the preliminary reports of the planets, trying to gain a better idea of what to expect in terms of how the ground would be. She considered leaving the room and going to sleep, but even though her low expectations of the soil were dampening her mood, she was still too giddy with the idea that very soon she would be one of the first people on a new planet. It was as if her foolish four-year-old’s self dreams had been realized.
At hearing the other person speak, her gaze followed the finger, glancing at the star that was relatively close, a bittersweet smile flitting across her face as she heard the passion in the other’s voice, reminding herself of whom she had been when she started in her field nearly 12 years ago. “Don’t apologize, I get it.” She said, offering a smile. “It’s super cool, and hey, at least your discovery is definitely gonna be interesting. It’s always like a 50-50 chance if the new plants or soil are interesting. But when it’s interesting, it’s so interesting.” She continued, rambling slightly.
Tumblr media
The woman offered a slight reprieve to Peia’s embarrassment, causing her to draw in a soft breath, nodding as a silent way of saying thank you. She had, however, caught something in her smile, ever observant as she was -- she had spent many of her formative years watching. It really depended on what aspect of her life you needed to know about that would soon reveal what she had been watching; stars, she would always say the stars, because the other option was too painful, too full of regrets to admit to.
Still, it was nice to hear another person speak, especially about something Peia hadn’t learned. Her father had been a smart man, though he could never have put his intelligence to use on Hermes, and everything she had learned had been through osmosis; she still learned that way now.
“I don’t think you’re giving plants and soil enough credit,” Peia said, his hand brushing over her array of notes. “In fact, I’d say that’s a lot more interesting than stars; constellations are just stories in the sky, but plants and soil? That stuff is, like, concrete. It means a chance at life, agriculture. It’s extremely interesting.”

fullthrcttle‌:
“Maybe we should hijack an emergency craft and go explore it.” The joke would be lost on her, at least he hoped. Lingering in the doorway a moment longer, he uncrossed his arms before Rafael moved through the confines of the small room. “I think when we get closer, we’ll know. It may be on it’s way to a yellow dwarf,” he spoke, his voice more gentle than his general tone. Rafael was used to being the one in charge, and more often than not, it showed. Learning his place had been a kick in the knees. There was, essentially, no reason to do anything but make friends here.
Giving her his signature smile–charming, rakish–Rafael moved to squat right beside her, looking at the notes. Hazel hued eyes moved to look out the window after a moment, the smile turning to one that was almost sad in nature. There was, essentially, nowhere to roam. Why not learn something? “I’m probably long. Basic education only does so much,” Rafael admitted, shrugging his shoulders as he stood back up. “I get it. When we start to explore? That’s when I probably won’t be able to contain myself.”
Tumblr media
His suggestion caused Peia’s eyebrows to raise, her mouth parting slightly. It seemed wildly inappropriate, not to mention a little dangerous but not entirely unfounded; no one could ever prove their hypothesis if they didn’t do something a little daring, right?
Unfortunately, daring wasn’t Peia’s middle name and he was moving on, quite literally, as he came towards her, offering his own take on her ideas. It caused her to smile, reminding her of the many conversations she’d had with her father, batting ideas between them that they could later confirm or refute through the use of a book. Adjusting her position a little -- so he could get a clearer view of her notes and to activate the tingling in her leg from sitting on it for so long --, Peia caught the shift in his smile; turning from that boyish charm -- that had caused her blush to turn from pink to red --, into something more demure in nature. It felt, oddly familiar.
“You wouldn’t be completely wrong, though,” she offered, hoping it’d do some good. “They both burn hydrogen in their cores, and are very similar.” Still, she was eager, and sure, for a reason: “I might just be overly hopeful; orange dwarf stars mean a higher chance of an inhabitable planet. It’s exciting.”
His remarked caused her to smile, nodding her head a little in agreement. “I always thought I’d be more interested in the area around the planets, but exploring is going to be really fun. Do you know what you’re hoping to find out there?”

With the approach of Planet #67B so imminent, Peia shouldn’t have been surprised by how much work was being put into it; though there was an air of... something amongst everyone. She wasn’t sure if it was nerves or excitement or, perhaps, general dismay that the first planet they had come across seemed to be a lot more yellow than it seemed inhabitable.
“Mapping efforts already?” she asked, politely, as she slipped into the seat adjacent to Echo. One leg pulled to her chest, Peia watched the images flick by, all holding the same, or similar, image; round and yellow and small. It was, actually, kind of cute. “I didn’t think much could be done from up here, but that’s really impressive. Has there been anything interesting, even from afar?”
The hint of hopefulness in her voice caused Peia to smile a little, her head tilting to the side. “Isn’t that how it goes, typically? I’m not sure what we could even name it though. Dandelion could be a nice.”
Tumblr media
“We’ve started mapping the new planet, but I won’t be able to do much ‘til we hit the ground,” she says, fingers swiping across the computer screen in front of her. Images of Undocumented Planet #67B – which Echo has taken to calling “Mustard Seed” in her head, due to its relatively small size and yellow hue – pop up. “Even if it’s not useful, it’s still pretty amazing that we’ll be the first people to land there… does that mean we get to name it?”
