Btw if something you consider “bad writing” is the exploration of period-appropriate obstacles and traumas faced by women (which is intimately tied up with men, btw) maybe you should sit down for a second and think about your thought process there.

TIL some people think that describing how a man’s trauma plays into his relationships, including sexual ones, leading to lack of desire to feel attachment to anyone and the desperate need to distract as much as possible, is “bad writing” because *looks at notes* character who is the leader of a gang and has severe PTSD treats sex with someone as “transactional”.
Btw, writing is not bad because a person we are supposed to see in a less than savory light, and whose mountain of issues is supposed to be plainly obvious, treats a woman badly.
Tumblr could at least try.

#everyones already pointed this out#I've always thought there's a part of Tom that resents Arthur#for not being able to lead#for having to be taken care of#that Tommy couldn't stand that because he knew Arthur should be filling that role as the oldest brother#which doesn't even mean Tom wants Arthur telling him what to do—I think he'd hate that#but when he's struggling himself he *hates* Arthur for struggling too#he can't stand it#This whole incident is such a fascinating reversal#and overall... Tommy softening toward Arthur over time#there's so much resentment there for a long time#but by season 5 he's the right hand and Tommy doesn't keep him out and he confides in him#because he finally starts to crack himself and he finally gets it#that Arthur isn't weak—Arthur is strong—Tommy was just in a place of emotional numbness for so long that he couldn't fully grasp onto how#Arthur related to his own trauma#'Why isn't he coping exactly like I am??'#'Why can't he??'#Tom starts to crack apart himself in ways he can't control and his opium isn't workinganymore and he realizes he's never let himself leave#the war purely because he knew subconsciously he couldn't cope#which is why that vacation absolutely destroyed him#and from then on his relationship with Arthur was better#Arthur does best with Tommy when Tommy is letting out a reaction that Arthur can understand#He understands this and he knows exactly what to do and he immediately takes chare#He goes right into big brother mode because suddenly this is someone he knows how to support#whereas usually Tom is someone Arthur quite equally doesn't understand 'How is he doing this??' 'how is he coping??' and it's enfuriating#But this he gets—he understands—this is maybe something closer to the Tommy he knew before the war
