Adding to what has been said above, there is indeed some relief to be found in a response regardless of how it’s spiced so to speak. More and more, I find that people are just blatantly ignoring those who approach them. You can create the politest of messages and even send it by inbox instead ( since that tends to be a preferred method for first impressions ), but receive total silence in response. Yes, it can indeed be frustrating and insulting when an unkind response is received, but something can be better than nothing at all. 

Anyone else kind of annoyed when you jump into someone´s IMs, give a compliment about their muse becuase you want to interact, introduce yourself and are generally friendly and all that comes back is just a generic ok or some other curt, unfriendly response? where did you manners go, people?

As someone who has also been here for about that long ( since 2011 ) and just recently started reaching out to people more than usual, I can absolutely agree with this. A number of things have changed over the years and unfortunately, this is one of them. I think what complicates the process / exacerbates the problem is that there are people who just for whatever reason will not respond. You can send the friendliest and politest of messages asking if they might be interested in writing with you, but receive nothing but dead silence while they continue blogging. A simple ‘no thank you’ would suffice, but these people provide absolutely nothing. It’s discourteous and it dissuades people from wanting to approach others at all. So, then we find ourselves stuck in this predicament where everyone keeps to themselves.
