Info-wars are well underway. It doesn't matter where you stand on guns, this isn't about that (though they do amplify one side), but look just how swiftly they're able to mobilize in an attempt to amplify division.

“Meanwhile, some accounts with large bot followings are already spreading misinformation about the shooter's ties to far-left group Antifa, even though the Associated Press reported that he was a member of a local white nationalist group.”

Don’t Use Facebook’s Onavo VPN: It’s Designed to Spy On You You may have seen a new button in Facebook’s mobile app lately: under the Settings menu, a “Protect” option leads you to download an app called Onavo Protect. Don’t do it.

The Wall Street Journal published an article about this last year, but you don’t even need to dig that much to find this out—Onavo Protect tells you about it when you first open the app:

:When you use our VPN, we collect all the info that is sent to, and received from, your mobile device. This includes info about: your device and its location, apps installed on your device and how often you use those apps, the websites you visit, and the amount of data you use.

This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data. Because we’re part of Facebook, we also use this info to improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and services people value, and build better experiences."

According to the Journal, Facebook uses the data it gathers from Onavo Protect to know which apps its users open, when they do so, and where they do so, in order to gain an edge on its competitors. But Facebook can see a lot—if that app doesn’t encrypt its own traffic, in fact, they can see nearly everything you do in that app.

An Equifax spokeswoman told the Journal the company complied with regulatory requirements and that they didn’t consider the “insignificant” number of email addresses lost to be sensitive because they’re often publicly accessible. Similarly, the company downplayed the new revelations to CNN Money:

"Equifax spokesperson Meredith Griffanti told CNNMoney Friday that the original list of vulnerable personal information was never intended to represent the full list of potentiality exposed information."

Secure Messaging Apps Are Growing Faster in Corrupt Countries Apptopia data determined secure messaging apps grew in MAU across the board in 2017, while “corrupt” countries grew even more.

Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp are the two most popular messaging apps in general. Privacy-focused encrypted alternatives like Signal and Telegram are both growing rapidly for those concerned about confidentiality or living in regimes where surveillance is all-encompassing.

It’s worth pointing out that Telegram has its origins in Russia and despite what people believe it is NOT open source. Its client-side code is open-source but the source code for recent versions is not always immediately published. Its server-side code is closed-source and proprietary.

Signal is developed by Open Whisper Systems. The clients are published as free and open-source software under the GPLv3 license. The server code is published under the AGPLv3 license.

Only President Trump can halt the NSA’s warrantless mass surveillance

The bill which just zoomed through Congress reauthorizes what is known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which gathers information from foreigners overseas but incidentally collects an unknown amount of communications belonging to Americans.

Under Section 702, the NSA is empowered to eavesdrop on vast amounts of digital communications via American companies like Facebook, Verizon, Google, etc. The program also incidentally scoops up Americans’ communications and intelligence analysts can then search those messages without a warrant.

  This may or may not be the reason. It was due for a correction after an insane year of growth (all crypto, not just BTC). On top of that traders and whales could be taking profit for taxes. It's also bonus season so whales could be pushing down the price to get Wall Street money in and to buy back and a lower price (crypto is highly manipulated).
