the mentalist: 6x02 black-winged redbird ➔ He was just being playful. Ran out of time. Maybe something spooked him and he couldn’t go through with his usual routine.

Patrick Jane for whatever reason decides not to join the CBI. Maybe in this universe he was just not quiet functional enough, maybe he couldn't cover up his time in the mental institution, maybe the team he got stuck with didn't have the magic of the original group, maybe he just decided it'd be better to steal the Red John files and abscond into the night. In this version of events Jane is still a man very determined to kill Red John, but he is going to do it with the tools at his disposal, a few tricks up his sleeve, a few more warrants out for his arrest. And with a group of strays he can't help but seem to pick up. Jane still is very adamant about the validity of psychics, and he still ends up helping people along the way, because in every version of this story Jane goes through hell and learns to be kinder.
Teresa Lisbon starts off as a cop. Maybe the Bosco stuff finally catches up to her, maybe that psychologist really does end up framing her, maybe it was Red John. But for whatever reason, Teresa Lisbon starts off a cop but does not end up as one. In this version of events, something happens on her way to the prison- maybe Jane springs her out, I know all about you Teresa Lisbon, I know you worked on the Red John case, I know you are a decent person, and most importantly I know you do not want to go to jail... Lisbon has trouble adjusting, still being a big believer in justice, still very set in the police way of doing things, and not very happy with being a criminal on the run. But maybe with these people, these good people- God help her- she'll can still make a difference, still get a murderer off the streets, still have something of a future. She's not too fond of Jane's plan the kill the bastard though.
Kimball Cho gets sucked back into the gang life. He thought he'd never go back, that he'd build up his armor and get straightened out by the military. But the army is not a kind place, and Cho finds himself trading one violence for another, so he decides to become a civilian again. But good jobs are hard to find, especially if you have a record, so Cho reluctantly finds himself pedaling drugs, stolen goods, etc. this time on HIS terms. Until one day a golden haired man with a rumpled suit, wicked smile, and sad eyes, offers him a deal...
Wayne Rigsby never could completely escape his father. Rigsby would tell himself that he wouldn't go back this time, that he hates his old man, that he deserves better than this- but his father would call him up for help, call him a useless son of a bitch in the process, and Rigsby would find himself dropping everything to fix the problem. And fixing problems would usually involve doing something illegal. And the more illegal things Rigsby did for his father, the more blackmail material he had to use against him- to keep him coming back. Rigsby finds himself spiraling further into the life of the gang, until a strange man with the most intense gaze he's ever seen, looks into his eyes and says, you weren't cut out for all this, were you? You are a good man, so why are you here?
Grace Vanpelt gets caught up in all this completely by accident. Maybe she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, maybe she saw something she shouldn't have, but she's in trouble with Red John, and Red John has extensive connections. So Jane and the rest of the gang decide to take her into the fold. They could use a hacker anyway, and maybe they're just tired of seeing young women mutilated and slaughtered.

the mentalist: 5x22 red john’s rules ➔ She’s just a memory that made me smile. And Red John killed her. I… I-it’s like he just reached into my head and killed a happy memory. How is it possible?

the mentalist: 5x21 red and itchy ➔ Tupperware’s never handy. It’s always in the wrong drawer. And when you do find it the lid’s always missing.
