Are these trending New York City restaurants on your radar? - WABC-TV
Want the inside word on New York City's most happening local spots?
We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to analyze which eateries have been getting outsized attention this month.
To find out who made the list, we looked at New York City businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increase their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.
Read on to see which spots are on a hot streak, right now. ---
Gupshup

Open since November, this cocktail bar and Indian and breakfast and brunch spot is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "Breakfast & Brunch" on Yelp.
Citywide, breakfast and brunch spots saw review counts increase by a median of 2.2 percent over the past month, but GupShup saw a 100 percent increase, maintaining a solid four-star rating throughout.
It's not the only trending outlier in the breakfast and brunch category: Cleo has seen a 32.4 percent increase in reviews.
Located at 115 18th St. in Gramercy, GupShup offers a variety of Indian-infused dishes, cocktails and desserts. Try the lamb shank with burrah and rogan josh jus and pair it with the Lovlekar Lime cocktail with tamarind, black salt, Fords gin, egg whites, lime, cumin and fizz.
Angeletto Restaurant

Whether or not you've been hearing buzz about Midtown's Angeletto Restaurant, the Italian spot is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.
While businesses categorized as "Italian" on Yelp increased their review count by a median of 2.1 percent over the past month, Angeletto Restaurant bagged a 51.9 percent increase in reviews within that timeframe, maintaining a healthy 4.5-star rating. It significantly outperformed the previous month by gaining 4.4 times more reviews than expected based on its past performance.
Open at 890 Second Ave. (between 47th and 48th streets) since June, Angeletto Restaurant offers a large selection of Italian dishes and pastas like the rigatoni alla carbonara with Pecorino Romano, smoked pancetta and egg yolk.
TabeTomo

The East Village's TabeTomo is currently on the upswing in the ramen category on Yelp.
While businesses categorized as "Ramen" on Yelp increased review counts by a median of 3.2 percent over the past month, this ramen spot increased its by 100 percent--with its Yelp rating declining slightly from 4.5 stars to four stars.
Open for business at 131 Ave. A (between 7th St. and St. Marks Place) since December, the business offers Japanese dishes and different ramen combinations with pork broth.
Momofuku Noodle Bar

Open since November, this New American spot, which offers noodles and more, is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "American (New)" on Yelp.
Citywide, businesses tagged "American (New)" saw review counts increase by a median of 2.5 percent over the past month, but Momofuku Noodle Bar saw a 62.5 percent increase, maintaining a strong four-star rating throughout.
Located at 10 Columbus Circle, Floor 3 (between West Central Park and Broadway) in Lincoln Square, Momofuku Noodle Bar offers hand-rolled breads, noodle dishes, ramen and more. Order the spicy oxtail with rice cakes, daikon and buttered rice.

Rep. John Lewis Speaks Out Against Rampant Violence in Places of Worship
Tumblr media
Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) (Freddie Allen/AMG/NNPA)
By Sentinel News Wire
America is reeling from another attack on a synagogue just one day before the end of Passover. A young shooter, allegedly a 19-year-old man currently in police custody, walked into the Chabad of Poway, a 33-year-old synagogue in the outskirts of San Diego and opened fire with an assault rifle on worshippers. One person is dead and three others were injured in the shooting, which the Mayor of Poway, Steve Vaus, has called a hate crime based on statements the shooter made as he entered the synagogue. Rep. John Lewis made this statement in response to the tragedy:
“It has come to a point where the people of this nation, and citizens of the world, cannot attend church or safely worship at synagogues or mosques. Violence is so pervasive in our society and in the world community that it has broken through the consecration of the sanctuary and violated our most sacred spaces. How many more lives do we need to lose before we decide to do all we can to bring an end to wanton gun violence in this country?
“My heart goes out to the victims, their families and the members of the Chabad of Poway. The continuous prayers of the people of the fifth congressional district are with them. We must honor their lives by taking action to end gun violence in our society.”

Make Sandwich leaves 4th Avenue, will try again somewhere else
Tumblr media
Catching up to a year-end closing on Fourth Avenue ... where Make Sandwich shut down right before Christmas here between 13th Street and 14th Street.
According to the shop's website: "We’ll be closing the shop ... to look for a location that is more suitable for our craft. We’d like to thank you all for your support and sando love."
This area around Union Square seems like a suitable spot for a sandwich place... or maybe there were too many quick-serve options right around here. (Sandwicherie New York arrived on Fourth Avenue at 13th Street shortly after Make's debut, for instance.)
Make, an extension of the Melt Shop brand, opened at 135 Fourth Ave. in January 2017.

Congestion Pricing Would Cut Weekly Express Bus Commute Times By Hours: Report
Money is time.
The proposed congestion pricing plan to create $1.5 billion in new funding for the MTA would also have the side benefit of saving express bus commuters up to two hours per week on their horrendously long commutes, a new report by the Riders Alliance reveals.
All commutes on MTA express buses would shorten dramatically, with the single best time savings along the X63 bus from Rosedale in Queens to Peter Cooper Village in Manhattan.
The Riders Alliance did the math by using Charles Komanoff’s seminal Balanced Transportation Analyzer to calculate the expected reductions in bus travel times based on the declining number of cars expected to enter Manhattan below 60th Street if a congestion pricing fee were to be implemented. Komanoff’s model takes into account the reduction in congestion both within the congestion zone and on streets in the outer boroughs that would also be carrying less traffic.
Traffic speeds are expected to increase by 20 percent inside the zone and by 7 percent outside of it.
Data analysts at the Riders Alliance broke up express bus route segments into those two portions and then calculated how much faster buses would be expected to run through both zones to come up with the overall time savings for commuters. Nothing came close to the two-hours-per-week that X63 riders might save, but the overall benefits were substantial for riders of the X64 (1:52 per week), QM8 (1:37), BM1 and BM3 (1:35), BM4 (1:34), and QM17 (1:26).
Source: Riders Alliance
Despite those time savings, many elected officials in communities served by express buses have not signed on to support congestion pricing. Assembly Member Alicia Hyndman, whose district includes the X63 and X64 buses, has opposed new tolls to enter Manhattan. Her neighboring Assembly Member Vivian Cook, whose district also includes those lines, also opposes congestion pricing. And Assembly Members Jeffrion Aubry, Ronald Kim, Michael Miller and Michele Titus, who all have express bus lines running through their districts, all have said negative things about congestion pricing, too.
That’s exactly the kind of opposition that the Riders Alliance can’t understand.
“Queens and Brooklyn express bus riders pay $6.50 each way to slog through traffic to and from neighborhoods far from the subway. Many spend over 15 hours a week in transit,” said Danny Pearlstein, the group’s policy and communications director. “An extra hour or two per week gained from congestion pricing would mean real time for real people to take care of themselves and their families. With so much talk about fairness, congestion pricing returns a truly priceless resource to folks who can spare precious little of it. Congestion pricing could mean an extra moment together over breakfast, a little more help with homework or housework, another chapter before bedtime, a longer kiss goodnight.
“When Albany takes up the issue next year, express bus commuters from the outer reaches of the city — and their families — should be high on the governor’s and legislators’ packed agenda.”
The Riders Alliance will share its full findings on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the BM1/BM2/BM3/BM4/QM7/QM11/QM25 express bus stop at Church Street and Park Place in Manhattan.

School Board Approves Joseph Severance Package
Tumblr media
“We did not do our part,” said School Board Vice Chair Christiane Buggs.
By Peter White
NASHVILLE, TN — In a 5-3 vote, the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Education decided Tuesday to buy out the contract of Metro Nashville Public Schools Director, Dr. Shawn Joseph. Dr. Adrienne Battle will serve as interim director.
In a statement Joseph said it was his life’s mission to ensure equity and excellence for all children and the he would continue to do so. “I believe much has been accomplished despite the pervasive challenges I encountered when arriving, and I am so proud of the tremendous work of the thousands of teachers and staff members who have helped to move the needle for our children,” Joseph said.
The terms were negotiated between Joseph’s lawyer and Metro Legal director Jon Cooper. Metro will pay Joseph’s attorney’s fees. The board approved the agreement Tuesday night.
The Metro School Board chamber was packed Tuesday with a pro-Joseph crowd. Some parents told the board that the turmoil and fighting has kept their children from getting a good education.
Joseph’s last day will be Friday, April 12, 2019. There were ten parts to the separation agreement, a couple dealing with potential lawsuits. Board Chair Sharon Gentry summarized the buyout agreement that required both parties to refrain from “talking bad” about each other in the future.
“We have obviously reached an impasse,” said Amy Frogge (District 9).
The Metro School Board chamber was packed Tuesday with a pro-Joseph crowd. Some parents told the board that the turmoil and fighting has kept their children from getting a good education.
The board has been sharply split about Joseph’s leadership for months. Vice Chair Christiane Buggs, reflecting on the rift that has pushed Joseph out, said the board has tried to be Joseph’s boss and tell him what to do instead of helping him manage the district and the challenges facing Metro schools.
“Dr. Joseph is ready to go and leave what amounts to hostile working conditions so this a voluntary separation conversation. This is not a firing,” said Will Pinkston (District 7). Board Chair Sharon Gentry agreed.
“We are not terminating him. This is not a blight on his resume. It was, as he stated in his own statement, that it’s gotten to the point where he does not believe that the things that he values are aligning with the district, with the board specifically and it was time for us to part ways,” Gentry said.
Amy Frogge (District 9) then read a statement attacking Joseph and criticized his handling of the school budget, sexual harassment complaints, and blamed him for low morale among teachers and staff. She also criticized the board for an “an epic failure of the board’s oversight capacity with regard to fiscal operations”.
“I don’t personally believe that throwing out any number of allegations or accusations is holding the director accountable. We did not hold the director accountable because we did not do our part. It was our job to review the contracts. It was our job to follow up with Metro Legal if there were issues with contracts,” Buggs said.
School Board Chair Sharon Gentry, Rachel Anne Elrod, District 2, Vice Chair Christiane Buggs (District 5), Will Pinkson (District 7), and Gini Pupo-Walker (District 8) voted for the deal to give Joseph three months severance pay and $261,250 for the final year of a 4-year contract signed in July 2016.
Jill Speering (District 3), Amy Frogge (District 9, Fran Bush (District 6) voted against the deal. They wanted Joseph fired.
Anna Shepherd (District 4), who had also wanted to fire Joseph, did not attend the meeting.

County Learns Respond to Top Court’s
By Oakland Post
Over 120 local community and elected leaders rallied June 27 to celebrate the Supreme Court’s decision to block the citizenship question on Census 2020, which was proposed by the Trump Administration.
Participants included labor leaders, teachers, librarians, affordable housing leaders, immigrant rights advocates, health care providers, the Alameda County Community Foodbank, Urban Strategies Council, Greenlining Institute, and representatives from the Public Defender’s office.
The census coalition pledges to remain vigilant if the Census Bureau and Trump Administration choose to continue their pursuit of including the question, to inform Alameda County residents about the Census process. The Alameda County Complete Count Committee will spend the remaining 251 days until the Census begins educating and empowering everyone about the importance of getting counted
The Supreme Court, acting Thursday, found that the Census Bureau’s rationale to add a citizenship question (“for the purposes of enforcing the Voting Rights Act”) was “contrived” and in violation of the Administrative Procedures Act.
The Supreme Court sent the case back to the lower court so the Census Bureau can present its justification at a future hearing. However, the Bureau claims to have a print deadline of July 1, 2019, so it is unclear whether the Census Bureau will wait until the fall to or will commence in printing next week without the question.
Standing on the steps of the Alameda County Superior Courthouse, dozens of people chanted “Our Community Counts! Our Community Belongs!” followed by speeches from immigrant advocates, elected officials, and allies.
The County of Alameda has established a Complete Count Committee to ensure an accurate count of its residents. The Committee will work with trusted messengers of immigrant communities to convey the importance of the Census and specifically to dispel the myths and fear caused by the proposed citizenship question.
Outreach efforts will include workshops in multiple languages, Questionnaire Assistance Centers throughout Alameda County, Census Weeks at schools and colleges, and more. The 2020 Census can be completed online, via mobile device, by phone, and on paper.
A number of leaders in the county weighed in on the Supreme Court decision.
“This was an unnecessary question designed to threaten and intimidate our immigrant communities who rightfully feel that the federal government would use this data against them,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee.
“I will continue to fight to ensure that we have a census that meets the constitutional requirement for an accounting of all individuals regardless of citizenship – and to ensure that our immigrant neighbors are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.”
Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan said, “The citizenship question was a direct attack on immigrant communities intended solely to ignite fear and deter immigrant communities from participating in the Census.”
Added County Supervisor Nate Miley, “We have approximately 247,000 immigrants in Alameda County and we need the Census to be accessible to every single one of them. Next spring, we’ll open Questionnaire Assistance Centers in many neighborhoods and our partners will host workshops in multiple languages.”
Said Emma Paulino, senior organizer of Faith in Action East Bay, “The Census is used to distribute billions of dollars to Alameda County. For every single person not counted, we lose nearly $10,000 over a decade for our community. That means billions of dollars are at stake. An undercount will reduce housing units for low-income working families.”

The James M. Townsend House - 318 West 75th Street
The house to the right was constructed simultaneously for James W. Townsend, Jr.
Mansion architect C. P. H. Gilbert was busily designing a number of townhouses on the Upper West Side in 1895.  Unlike the rows of speculative houses rising throughout the district, most of Gilbert's were direct commissions.
Late that year the architect was hired by James M. Townsend and his son to design side-by-side homes at Nos. 318 and 320 West 75th Street respectively.   Gilbert treated the two homes independently with no attempt at melding the designs.
The James Mulford. Townsend home would stand slightly taller than No. 320.  Its sandy-colored brick upper floors sat on a limestone base.  Its somewhat rigid Renaissance Revival design was softened by delightful carvings of scallop shells and squiggly ribbons below the third floor cornice.  The shell-and-ribbon motif was repeated in the panels between the fifth floor windows; and a line of shells decorated the primary cornice.
Townsend was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1852.  He graduated from Yale University in 1874 and then from Columbia Law School.  He married Harriet Bailey Campbell, the daughter of Professor John Lyle Campbell of Washington and Lee University, on November 15, 1882.   Theirs would be a large family.  The couple had six children--Harriet Campbell, James Mulford, Jr., John Campbell, Edward Howard, and twins Virginia and Donald.
The Townsends maintained a summer home at Pelham Manor, New York; described by The New York Times in July 1896 as "one of the most secluded localities on the Sound."  The article mentioned "No trade is carried on inside the manor limits."
Tumblr media
When James Mulford Townsend moved into the 75th Street house, he was the senior member of the law firm Townsend, Avery & Button.  from Men of Progress, 1898 (copyright expired)
Townsend's social status was evidenced in his club memberships.  Men of Progress in 1898 said "He is identified with many of New York's most prominent clubs."  Among them were the University, the Colonial, the New York Athletic and the Barnard Clubs.
Harriet's entertainments in the house were not lavish.  Society columns commented on teas and receptions rather than sumptuous dinners and dances.  Such was the case on February 26, 1900 when she hosted an 11 a.m. lecture by Mrs. Ruutz Rees on "Buddhism."
The Townsends remained at No. 318 until early in 1909 when it was sold to Dr. Frederick Merwin Ives.   An unlikely combination of physician and civic engineer, he was born in Rome in 1866, where his well-known sculptor father, Chauncey Ives, maintained his studio.  Ives had graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1889 and was married to Edith Wetherill, a graduate of Bryn Mawr College.
The couple had not lived in the home long before one of their servants was the near-victim of a robbery.  James Hanley had fallen asleep under a tree in Fort George Park on the evening of June 22, 1910.  His reverie was abruptly broken by uninvited movements.  He awoke "to find a sailor in full uniform bending over him and fumbling at his pockets," reported The New York Times the following day.  "He noticed, too, that his gold chain, worth $10, was missing."
Hanley jumped up and wrestled with the sailor, drawing the attention of a passing policeman.  The uniformed man was arrested and Hanley's watch chain was found in his pocket.  At the station house the crook said he was Thomas Doyle, attached to the U.S. cruiser the Franklin, and he had come to New York from the Norfolk Navy Yard on furlough.  The police were not quick to accept his story, telling reporters they "believed he is one of several fake sailors who beg in uniform for a living."
When the United States entered World War I Ives joined the Medical Department of the Army, with the rank of captain.  It may have been his absence that led to the 75th Street house being leased.  In September 1919 Albert Gran rented it.  But if the couple intended to return, it does not appear they ever did.
On July 30, 1920 an advertisement in The Sun offered "Charming rooms, overlooking Hudson, two doors Riverside Drive."  And then on September 7, 1923 The New York Times reported that Edith had sold the house for $65,000--more than $930,000 today.
The buyer was real estate operator Henry Schwamm.  Reports said he purchased it "for a client."  Apparently the client was himself for he and his wife, Clara, moved in.  Like Ives, Schwamm was multi-faceted.  In addition to his real estate business, he was an authority on medical and dental jurisprudence and wrote extensively on the subject.
The couple had five children, Gustave, Sidney, Blance, Camille and Frances.  They received the privileges of well-to-do families and extensive education.
When son Gustave's engagement to Norma June Wexler was announced in December 1932, for instance, newspapers noted he "was graduated from the College of Arts and Pure Science and the School of Law at New York University."   Gustave was still living at home and practicing law at the time.
The Schwamm's well-educated daughters Camille and Blanch attended the Institut Fisher at Montreux, Switzerland.   Camille then studied at Syracuse University, and New York University.  Blanche went on to Columbia University's Teachers College.
Dr. Henry Schwamm died at the age of 64 on July 22, 1943.   Three years later the house was converted to apartments, two on each floor except the top, which had three.
Despite the unfortunate apartment entrance doors and an inexplicable coating of paint over the limestone of the first floor, C. P. H. Gilbert's stately design endures between two other contemporary Gilbert houses.

Executives, recruiters and VCs predict Amazon's HQ2 will bring another tech boom to New York City - CNBC
While many New Yorkers are dreading the day Amazon moves into its new "headquarters" in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens and crowds the subway with 25,000 new workers, there's one group of people welcoming the company with open arms: Executives at other tech firms.
It may seem counter-intuitive that smaller tech companies are eager for a large potential rival to move onto their turf. But New York-based recruiters and tech leaders say they're using a different playbook from Amazon. They theorize Amazon's presence will bring in new tech talent that might not otherwise come to New York.
That could mean those new workers will eventually move on to smaller tech companies or come up with ideas for startups on their own, spurring interest from venture capitalists in the area.
According to interviews with 15 New York-based entrepreneurs, tech executives and venture capitalists, Amazon's move to NYC will lift up the local tech sector across the board, though some warn that it could also make it harder for smaller tech firms to compete for talent in the event of an economic downturn.
"We play the long game when it comes to talent," said Melissa Enbar, VP of People and Culture at Birchbox, an online subscription service for beauty products.
Enbar said people are attracted to smaller firms for different reasons than large ones, like the opportunity to have more exposure and responsibility early on. She said she expects Amazon's move will bring a wave of new talent to the city that a smaller company like Birchbox couldn't afford to relocate on its own.
"Maybe their second job, like after they're done with Amazon, is Birchbox," Enbar said.
Amazon's arrival in New York will certainly mark a significant moment for a city already considered to be the tech hub of the East Coast. Executives and investors said the move reinforces the city as an important place for tech and will help infuse it with venture capital and elite talent.
But what's yet to be seen is how that talent and money will be distributed across the existing tech companies in the city in an already-tight labor market. While New York tech executives are hopeful that Amazon's presence will spread the prosperity around, it may only last as long as the economy remains stable, some warn.
"In my experience in the past, when there's been recessions, there's always been a flight to safety from tech startups to larger companies that can provide more cash and more security," said Dan Finnigan, president and CEO of recruitment platform Jobvite. For Amazon, that means "they could be timing it perfectly."
Still, Finnigan and other tech leaders said Amazon's move will be a net positive for the city's startups. At the very least, they said, it won't change much about the way they're already competing for tech talent.
"To be honest, this is like the fifth time this has happened," said Dennis Crowley, co-founder and executive chairman of Foursquare. Facebook and Google both have major offices in New York, with Google planning to invest another $1 billion in its new Hudson Square campus, following a $2.4 billion purchase of shopping and office complex Chelsea Market earlier this year. Between the two investments, Google said it could double its New York workforce of 7,000 over the next 10 years.
Amazon's impact in New York is largely dependent on the types of jobs it ends up bringing there. Warren Lee, an independent New York-based investor who most recently worked for Canaan Partners, said that Google and Facebook would likely remain the chief rivals for engineering and product talent if Amazon opts to establish less technical projects in New York. Amazon did not respond to requests for comment.
On the other hand, Lee said, Amazon could pose a serious threat to AdTech companies in the city if it builds its advertising arm there, as many suspect was a key motivator to select the marketing mecca. In that case, AdTech companies would have to consider upping their pay and benefits to keep their niche talent, he said. Amazon said it will pay employees an average salary of $150,000 at its Long Island City office.
