Reason for divorce:

It's very funny and very fitting. Joshua shot him twice (he got better… also thanks to Joshua). Neku was willing to sacrifice a whole city for him but also refers to him as "Private Dick Extraordinaire" at one point. Joshua's response to finding out Neku wants to hang out with him was to avoid him forever despite the fact that he misses him deeply. Three years later in the sequel Joshua's presence gives Neku instant serotonin canonically but also they start old married couple bickering the moment they're alone. They're the only ones who truly understand each other and they're pretty much soul-married also there's a giant mural dedicated to their relationship but they should divorce like every other week. It would be fun and in-character. Joshua gets Mr. Hanekoma in the divorce.

my favorite dynamic with them personally is batter feeling a lack of identity due to being a puppet born with a sole purpose, and finding zacharie curious because zacharie has so many. the mysterious merchant, the cheeky guide, supposedly a slayer of kings, plus whatever hes really like under the mask.

and though zacharie knows its a game and it doesnt matter whether batter has an identity or not, helping him discover himself (albeit in vague ways) brings more life to the monotonous cycle of life and death. so he helps anyway.

i think they provide a lot of introspection
