Ch 9 - Daydreams and Nightmares - Ch 11
*Common* “English”
His child sat in front of the glowing screen that the gargoyles had brought home. His light footsteps sounded his arrival to zis child, making her look up at him.
*Papa!* The kappa ran up to him, hugging zis legs.
*Hello Onix.* Ze bent down and picked her up, her tail wrapping around his arm on instinct.
*What were you watching? *He turned the small ipad off.
*A human!* Onix grinned up at him. *Lou Jusu!*
*Lou Jutsu?* He moved out of the play room, walking down the colorful and moving halls.
*Yeah! ima become as strong as him!* Onix cheered, her eyes all scrunched up.
*Oh? Why?*
*Because he protects people!*
*I see.* Draxum stopped in front of the door to his lab. *I have a surprise for you child.*
Onix spun in his arms to look up at him. *Whut.*
Draxum chuckled and unlocked the doors with his free hand.
*Papaaaa!* Onix dragged the word out as she tried to stand on his arm.
*You will see in just a moment hun, sit back down.* Draxum shut the door behind zim and brought his daughter to the table on the far side.
Ze set Onix onto the counter, moving to uncover the only other thing on the table. A small incubator sat under its cover, warm orange light coming from its glass door.
*What is it?* Onix shifted over, her tail curling around a table leg as she shifted to the chair in front of the incubator.
*It’s an incubator.* Draxum opened the door and pulled out one of the small containers. *It’s used to keep eggs warm as they develop. Though this one is used for non-yoaki species.*
He popped the lid off, revealing two big eggs, one with a slit in it already. Bubbles formed at the slit, a sign of the creature in it breathing.
*Woah.* Onix looked into the container, one of her hands reaching it to touch the egg.
Draxum gently moved her hand away from the two eggs. Both of her hands curled around the lip of the container as she looked at the small tan eggs.
*What’s in em?*
*Turtles. Very similar to kappa, but much smaller and non sentient.* He pulled some of his papers down from the wall, looking over the two species ze had picked.
*What’s that mean?*' Onix looked up at him, away from the eggs.
*Sentient?* Draxum looked at the kappa.
*Yeh.* The kappa had returned her stare to the eggs.
*Can think like us, can talk in our languages.* He simplified the meaning as ze put the paper in front of Onix. *This is what these eggs will become. A spiny backed soft shell.*
*Like me!* Onix grinned as she looked at the eggs.
*No, you have snapping turtle dna.* Ze chuckled.
*Oh.* Onix deflated slightly, her tail losining off the table leg slightly.
*Don't worry, you two will be very similar soon.* Draxum gave her a pat on the head, gently taking the container from her. *I will make them like you.*
——
Onix looked at both of the containers on the table. Only a few hours ago her papa had explained that she would have siblings, yet she didn’t quite understand how ze would make them like her.
Two of the four turtles had hatched, broken shells and egg goo in the container as the small turtles swam in a clear box her papa had set up.
The two turtles that swam were different species according to her papa, and she could see the differences between them. She watched the one with a soft brown shell swim at the bottom of the box, and the one with a hard blue shell swim near the top.
She tilted her head, resting it on her arm as she looked at the small creatures.
She perked up slightly as she watched her papa return from the other room. She trilled at him, her tail wagging.
*Hello Onix.* Ze walked over and gave her a head pat.
*Can we make them like me now?* She pointed at the turtles.
*No, we need to wait a little while.* Her papa set down a small dish in the box, both turtles swimming over to it.
*What happened to the others?*Onix watched the small turtles eat.
Her papa sighed. *They did not make it. We only have these two.*
*Where did they go?* Onix looked up at the yoaki.
*Ah- They, well,..* Her papa trailed off. *Both of them are in a flower garden now.*
*I like flowers.* Onix put her head back on her arm as she smiled.
*I know you do.*
——
Onix ran with a grin on her face, small bundle in her hands. She crashed into the wall as she turned the corner, leaving small dents from her shell. She knew vines tailled after her, softing each blow. Her footsteps were heavy on the floor, the small orange bundle in her hands peeping slightly. Onix clicked back at it, still running.
She burst into the lab, not slowed by the curtain in the door frame.
*PAPA!* She yelled, skidding to a stop near her papa. *It hatched!* She held up the bundle in her hands.
“We have a guest Onix.” Draxum took the small orange bundle, carefully unwrapping the small box turtle from within.
Onix spun her head around, taking in the lab for the first time. A tank was set up on one one of the tables, both of the older turtles set up on it. On it were several containers and viles full of a soft green liquid.
“Why is there a child here.” A voice made Onix swing her head around the other way, startled.
“She is mine Lou, you need not worry about her.” Her papas hand was placed on her shoulder, making Onix look up and grin. *Onix, please go get your siblings.*
*Oki!* Onix ducked out from under her papas hand with a grin and went over to the table with the tank on in. She stood on her claws and picked the two turtles up.
“Lou, this might change your mind.” Draxum addressed the human as Onix trotted over to zes side.
“I will never join you in your plans to destroy humanity.” The human still got up from where he was sitting.
“I have already told you, I do not wish for the death of humanity.” Draum turned to walk out of the door on the far side of the room, unlocking the old wood door and letting Onix through.
“I struggle to believe that, more so with the child soldiers.” Lou pointed at Onix, the kappa tilting her head at him.
“‘m not a sold-jar.” she huffed in the human language, making Lou jump.
“Soldier.” Draxum corrected with a smile. “And I would never make a child be a warrior. These four will protect our peoples, more from being a deterrent than warriors.” Draxum set the box turtle on the counter, still wrapped in the orange cloth.
Lou glared at Draxum with a look only reserved for the monsters in BIg Mamas Nexus.
“Look, Lou, if this bothers you so much-“ The Borran was cut off as something clanged.
Lou ran forward, grabbing the turtle on the counter. He grunted and ran towards the little mutant, who had just put the two turtles in a bath of green liquid, getting her hands coated in the stuff.
Lou grabbed the baby turtles out of it, hissing at the sting. Purple vines shot his way, the yokai yelling in its language. Lou cursed back, dodging the vines. He yelled as a vine cut close to his face, making Lou bleed for the first time in years.
He slapped a vine away from the scared mutant, her big silver eyes filled with fear. He grabbed her wrist, pulling her away.
As he ran, he spotted the small black yokai that had taken him. He shuffled all three of the ooze covered turtles to one hand and grabbed a beaker that was on a table he was running past.
Unconcerned with the dark liquid inside, he threw at the small yokai. They both yelled at him, but he had already turned and was leading the mutant out of the building.
It was a good thing he had chosen to run, as only seconds after he exited the building it erupted in flames. The small scared mutant started to stream and tried to claw her way out of his hands.
“PAPA” She screamed, claws digging deeper into his skin. ”PAPA-“
“That yoaki is dead.” Lou huffed. no way anyone could survive that. “No one would survive that.”
The mutant looked up at him, eyes filled with tears. Lou felt his face soften as he looked at the kid. The mutant was only a kid and she was already missing parts of her shell and had scars running down one side of her face.
Lou got onto his knees, keeping the turtles safe in one hand. “Kid, look at me. That man is dead, there is no surviving that.” He paused to look at the tear stricken kid.
“Right, come on, we should get you away from here.” Lou stood up and reached for the mutant. she growled at him. He sighed.
“If I give you the turtles, will you follow me?”
The mutant froze, eyes big. Then it slowly nodded. “Y- yes.”
Lou took her hand, begging to move to the portal out of the hidden city, turtles in hand.

Ch 8 - Sakura Wagashi and Hatching-Days - Ch 10
small footsteps sounded down the quiet halls of the empty house. The giggles of small lungs made the yokai look up, zes hands stilling as he put his papers down.
“Papa!” The small voice barged into the room, the small kappa jumping up at his chair.
Ze looked at the small child with wide eyes, then blinked and shook zir head.
“Yes child?” Ze offered one hand to the kappa.
Said kappa used zes hand to pull herself onto his lap, big silver eyes looking up at his own dark red ones.
“Make me like you!” The kappa grinned, small fangs already making themselves known.
“And what do you mean by that?” Ze hummed, moving one of the stray bandages on her tail back into place.
“You're my papa! make me like you!” The kappa was still grinning.
the yokai laughed, bringing one hand to her head. “Alright child. I will make you like me.”
He continued to laugh as the kappa cheered, even if ze had no idea what she had ment.
——
Small black hands reached for a blanket, only to find it held down by a good amount of weight. The small gargoyle slowly opened their eyes, bright blue eyes aglow in the dark of the room.
They huffed and pulled at the blanket again, only for a sniffing sound to come from where it was held down. They tiled their cat-like head, looking at the lump of fabric at the end of the bed.
Another small sniffing sound made the gargoyle huff and stretch their long body out before padding over to the small, quivering, lump.
they stretched one wing over the lump, risking a glance back at the other two on the bed. The smaller shape was fast asleep, purple mouth open and drooling, not waking anytime soon.
The other, much bigger form, was curled around the other gargoyle, loses strands of hair peeking out of their nightcap.
The blue eyed gargoyle huffed and wiggled around, looking for an opening in the mass of blankets.
they gave a small squeak of alarm when they suddenly found it, one big silver eye looking up at them. the gargoyle huffed and offered their small hands, gently rubbing at the small spikes forming on the kappas cheeks as she wiggled closer.
the gargoyle began to hum, a song passed down from one gargoyle to another, gently wiping tears from the kappas face.
The kappa calmed down, no longer shaking as she slowly slipped into sleep. the goyal gave a gentle smile, wiggling to lay next to her with a huff.
They fell asleep as the kappa began to snore.
——
A small green body was hoisted next to the purple eyed gargoyle, a grin splitting the kappa face in half.
The gargoyle grinned back and reached into his bag, offering some of its contents to the kappa. The kappa sniffed at the small flowers and seed, taking one of the bigger pants in her small hands.
The gargoyle put most of the remaining plants back into his bag before shoving a handful of seed in his mouth. The small kappa looked up at him with big silver eyes, mouth slightly agape.
“You can eat it!” The purple eyed gargoyle spokes round his prize, pointing at the flower in the kappas hands.
The kappa looked down at the flower then back up at him. With his nod she trilled and shoved the entire flower in her mouth. She blinked at the taste of the plant before giggling. The goyle joined her as they feasted on their treats.
“Who raided the green house?! We have a kitchen for a reason!”
——
The little kappa sat on a bench in a busy square, her tail swishing from side to side as she looked at the crowd. She sat surrounded by bags, ones filled with food and clothing her family had gotten for her.
The sounds of wing eats and gossiping made her look at the two gargoyles flying over to her, pink things in hand.
“Hey kiddo! We got treats!” The bigger one, the one with purple eyes, landed on the backing of the bench, hitting down on his prize.
“Sakura wagashi.” The smaller one, the one with blue eyes, landed on the kappas shoulder to offer her a small cup.
The kappa took the cup, looking at the small flower shaped thing on the inside. She looked up at the gargoyles, who were both chowing down on theirs.
“You can eat it ‘ya know.” The bigger spoke, popping one of the flowers into his mouth.
“It’s rice and beans kid. Not real flowers.” the smaller jumped from the kappas shoulder to the backing of the bench.
The kappa took one of the flowers out and sniffed at it before gently nibbling at it. The kappa chirped in delight at the sweet and fluffy food. The gargoyles laughed.
——
All four of the house's residents gathered in the kitchen, a small pile of boxes and bags set on the table.
The kappa sat on the table, her tail wagging as her family put food on the table and sat next to her.
She reached for her papa as the yokai sat next to her, putting a small box in front of her. Her papa hugged her back, then pointed at the box he had set down.
“You can open that one, then we’ll eat.”
The kappa grinned and dove to open the box. Inside she found a red ribbon and a small purple diamond. She looked up at her papa, who moved some hair aside to show her the matching one he wore on zis ear. She glanced at her uncles, who both wore matching ones around their necks.
She rolled and sloppily tied the ribbon around her neck. She couldn’t speak as her hands moved rapidly, going up and down as fast as they could. her uncles laughed and gained in on their own movements, wings moving in time to her hands. Her papa huffed and patted her on the head.
“Happy birthday child.”

A simple guide to picking a great color palette. No matter what the colors are, using colors that are certain distances from each other on the color wheel result in a great contrast of colors. The simple color schemes shown above are used in the most popular logos, posters, websites, paintings, and even movies and television.
