I wanna go! :(
The Babes in Toyland’s show at the Roxy on Thursday would have been the first live show by the Babes since 2001. But Pappy and Harriet’s scored a coup last night by hosting their first performance. Pappy and Harriet’s is one of those gems built on the love of music, a cold beer in a mason jar and the most relaxed music atmosphere in California not to mention the cheese fries that should be patented.
The doors opened at 6:00 PM but fans were lined up at 5:30 PM that is a good fanatic barometer in my experience. Chief Doorlogist Beth was banding those waiting to get in, checking lists for this sold out show.
The early birds were rewarded to a fantastic sound check as they fueled up for this high-energy night. With the younglings flying elbows at every rock show I was concerned that I would be part of the show landing on the stage during a crowd push since there was no photo pit and everyone wanted to be front and center.
As my luck would have it one my blog followers Rocio was at the show who is a ‘veterana’ music fan, and USMC devil dog and knows her way around a mosh pit so with a little help from a friend I was confident I would stay up right for this performance.
Babes in Toyland kicked things to a different level with these simple words “Widowspeek but do not see the seer” from the impeccable refrain “Oh Yeah!” off Nemesisters. This caused my right flank to fly forward but Rocio was able to maintain her footing barely keeping off the stage. Kat Bjelland’s vocals were pure perfection. Her gaze was half crazed but in a great rock n’roll way taking a few kicks in the air with her left leg as she stayed close to the microphone. When not near the mic she would walk back and forth to the drum kit arching back and forth. Maureen Herman was magical on bass she was confident on stage laying down hefty bass lines. Lori Barbero co-founder of Babes in Toyland was behind the kit. Her intensity and sturdy pounding resulted in an unstable kick drum causing a DIY repair of a softball size rock sourced from the desert to keep the kick drum from moving forward two thirds into their gig. Barbero vocals for “Drivin” were hauntingly virtuous only surpassed by her drumming that was top notch. As I watched the remaining show from the relative comfort of the side of the stage I noticed a local music editor getting elbowed in the chest by a petite blonde. I quickly recognized these signature dance moves belonging to the artist Peaches who threw down some great dance moves at David Cathing’s birthday party last year.
This grungy goodness continued during their fifty minute set ending with “Sweet ’69.” After the show a large merch line formed at the front entrance of Pappy’s sans Bjelland who was hanging out behind the venue for a few minutes until an orderly line formed so she could sign autographs and take selfies with her fans for nearly an hour. I can’t image what awaits the Roxy on Thursday as they continue to please a new generation of fans.

Love this
A devoted following came to Pappy and Harriet’s from all over California and as far as Canada, a youthful smoking hot legion made Pappy’s their home for the night with loads of stunning Latina followers who were in the majority.
No sign of Snacks the cat that graced the cover of Crazy for You.
The start time for the opening band was 9 PM but fans began gathering in front of the tiny stage at 6 PM sitting down for the three-hour wait. You always get an impression of the ‘It factor’ of a band by how enthusiastic the audience is before the show.
Blissfulness imbued all as if they just came from the Integratron but this vitality came from the good vibrations being beamed by Best Coast.
Fan boys and girls had reason to be blissful because Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno killed it on Friday night.
Best Coast has a way of connecting, this time with a superior complete sound playing as a five-piece band. The performance started with ‘Last Year,’ with loads of reverb and sadness Bethany Cosentino’s gorgeous voice sang “I used to believe in diamonds and things I use to believe in you and me now I believe in nothing.”
Cosentino has this cool sexy demeanor while on stage which is captivating. Best Coast followed with ‘This Lonely Morning’ with an upbeat tempo from their mini album Fade Away. Bethany acknowledged a fanatic from the north by saying “Someone came from fucking Canada.”
Love lost, heartache with a splash of optimism are recurrent melodies with Best Coast conveying this retro surf vibe with a touch of an Art Laboe’s oldies compilation album which could have featured the song ‘Our Deal’ if Best Coast could travel in a time machine.
The audience was lucky to hear new songs ‘Heaven Sent’ and ‘Feeling Ok’ from their new 3rd full-length album California Nights out on May 5 via a major label unveiling with Harvest. Bethany introduced a classic Best Coast song by stating, “This is an old song I rarely play it, it’s called ‘The End,’ ” which got a prompt applause.
Show goers savored rare live favorites including ‘When I’m With You’ and ‘I Want To.’ As the 80-minute show neared it’s end Cosentino introduced one of the encore songs “This song is about a girl that is a bitch ‘Bratty B.’ “ She was very appreciative about everyone travelling so far for this show and thanked everybody. She ended the set with the rosy song ‘Boyfriend’ whose official video features Best Coast playing at a Quince party in a LA Park. If this show was any indication of Best Coast’s future, a bright path awaits this talented group.
