i've just had a brilliant idea. gravity falls x hollow knight crossover. thoughts under the cut. tldr, Soul Master makes a deal with Bill Cipher pre-infection. during-infection, Ghost arrives in the Soul Sanctum and is unamused.

before the infection got bad, Soul Master was researching the use of Soul, specifically to stave off the infection, right? But he was stuck, the experiments weren't working (like we see in the research logs in soul sanctum - one part in particular stood out to me. "the mind limits us so. how to push past its barriers?' or something like that. there's definitely something to be done with that, I just haven't thought of it yet) and he knows he's going to start running out of time.

enter Bill Cipher. he appears in Soul Master's dreams, presenting himself as a higher being which both the king and the radiance had tried to erase from history (maybe not entirely wrong? i will think more on this later.) Bill introduces himself not by his name, as most higher beings in Hallownest go by titles rather than names, but as the All-Seeing Eye. he says that he can help the Soul Master's research into Soul, give him tips and pointers in his experiments, make everyone see. make them pay for not listening to him, make the king acknowledge his research and work. give him power, make him respected. (sound familiar?) All he'll have to do is help Bill with a project of his - easy enough, since Soul Master has plenty of followers and researchers in the Sanctum. As an added bonus, he'll even keep the radiance out of the Soul Master's dreams - all he has to do is let Bill into his mind. He can't do any of that from out here, after all.

They make a deal. and, when Ghost arrives at the Soul Sanctum, lifetimes later, after the infection has already broken loose once more - they do not arrive to glowing orange eyes and shambling husks. They do not arrive to a cold, grey Soul Sanctum where the souls - and Soul - of the dead whisper through the halls. They arrive somewhere that seems so completely different from the rest of the city. Gold embellishments, strange idols, and watching eyes greet them. A strange device dominates one of the rooms, partially built, with complex machinery and Soul magic alike. Statues of a being neither bug, nor beast, nor vessel, nor wyrm. And when they reach the center, that rooftop where the Soul Master retreats to, they do not meet orange, pulsating eyes. They meet eyes strange to any bug - gold, but not like the radiance's light. Something else, something other. Bill.

Bill sees an opportunity - Ghost's plan, one way or another, is to end the infection. And with the infection gone, a power vacuum would open - one that he might be able to use. Ghost is having none of it - Bill seems just a tad too similar to the Radiance, and the Sanctum was pretty creepy, to be honest. Bill, in what could maybe be called a loss of temper, uses the Soul Master's body to attack Ghost. Ghost, again, is having none of it - beating the shit out of the Soul Master's body and leaving, then beating the shit out of anyone who tries to stop them.

Bill shows up to bother them randomly after that - in the dream realm when they get the Dreamnail (the Seer did NOT react well to that), in the White Palace, during dream battles (Ghost almost attacks him on several occasions), occasionally when they fall asleep on a bench, and in the space between opening a dreamgate and coming out the other side.
