In-game Ads: The future of Marketing
Tumblr media
Since digital technologies are killing traditional media, advertising strategies that depend on the traditional media channels also need to find new answers. According to the Entertainment Software Association, in 2011, 72% of American households played video games. And About 42% of all video game users were females. Expected market revenues were 74 billion dollars. As video games have occupied a status as a mainstream medium, advertisers are being attracted by video games as a marketing vehicle. Yes, in-game advertising is growing.
In my presentation, I covered a variety of strategies of in-game ads (IGA). Static IGA is ads that is programmed into a game. It is similar to product placement in films. Dynamic IGA is ads that can be implemented, updated and/or changed in real-time. Console integration offers the ability to deliver time sensitive campaigns, to geo-target, and age-target gamers. Advergaming takes the form of fully-functional games that are developed for the sole purpose of advertising. Lastly, mobile IGA takes the form of overlay banners that drop down in varying intervals in mobile games.
I also taught how to conduct a real IGA campaign using Google AdWords. After creating an on-going campaign advertising #NewhouseSM6 class, I presented how it looks and how it works.
During my presentation, new types of IGA are also introduced. For example, Microsoft providing totally integrated ad campaigns using technologies such as Xbox360 and Kinect. Another new type IGA takes a form of advergaming which is Nike+Kinect. Collaborating with Microsoft, Nike endeavors to build a strong bond with customers. Finally, IGA using QR-code was also covered.
Lastly, opinions from two professionals working in the video gaming industry were given to audiences in the presentations. Dave Ushman and So Young Kim gave great insights about this field sharing their knowledge and investigations.
Through this project and #NewhouseSM6 class, I could learn a lot about social media and how to utilize the tools to build my career. Although everyone is on Facebook today, there are not many who use Facebook smarter and more useful ways for their future employment or research. With the best peers who shared great insight regarding the social media and digital media tools, I have become a social media pro! Special thank you to @DR4WARD. Nothing could be done without his instruction and advice.

Organizational Social Media Use_Kate Brodock
Tumblr media
On October 23rd, 2012, Kate Brodock, Executive Director of Digital & Social Media at Syracuse University, was invited to one of my classes, Social Media Theory and Practive, as a guest lecturer. Although I was absent on the day because of my sickness, I still could learn from her through Twitter streams created by my peers who were there. Focusing on digital and social media use of Syracuse University, she shared varied strategies of SU to communicate with its target audiences more effectively. According to her, SU broke Twitter into many channels based on user needs. For example, @SUSqueeze is being used only for live events. Also, inspired by Oscar de la Renta, SU started using Pinterest. Heavy use of Foursquare as a location-based social media strategy was also interesting. Also she mentioned that there is a student team involved in the social media accounts for Syracuse University, and the members had to be trained by SU. In managing social media use for a large organization, considering between centralization and decentralization is important. In addition, interaction with people to let them social media is not a scary thing is necessary. She also shared a concept about content creation and content curation which is gathering third party content. Content curation may provide a good filter for audience but being dependent too much only on third party content is harmful for being an expert. Therefore, healthy level of content curation should be the answer.
Here is my storify post regarding the event:

Finding Peace: Hearing from the 14th Dalai Lama
Tumblr media
One day in last week, as a Syracuse University student, I had a chance to hear from the 14th Dalai Lama. I have never known if I could see him in person in my whole life but it fortunately happened to me. What is better, in addition to the Dalai Lama, there were many other celebrities such as Martin Luther King III, Shirin Ebadi, Mohamed ElBaradei, and Roxana Saberi.
The discussion among peace finders was very inspiring to me. It inspired me to think about differences. There might be no answer in the world. Truths are values that can be hardly found. I mean truths may not be something absolute. However, we fight and fight everyday, arguing "my view is correct and your are wrong!" Actually, there might be nothing wrong. Republicans vs. Democrats, Whites vs. Blacks, Western world vs. Eastern world, Male vs Female... Nothing is wrong or bad, but they are just different. According to Dalai Lama, happiness can be found when we can have inner peace in minds, and the inner peace can be found when we can see and understand the differences in the world.

Boys Be Social
Tumblr media
Information is everywhere in the world we are living. Transmission of knowledge is too fast and extensive. In this modern age, individuals need to reveal themselves in the midst of information flood. For the past month, I have learned how to market myself to my future employers with varied social media platforms. Yes, social media such as Facebook or Twitter can be used not only for entertaining but also for self-marketing of users. This is called professional use of social media. Following the guide of @DR4WARD, I have collected interesting information related to my future career. I have also distributed the information through the varied social media tools so that my future employers can recognize who I am and what my interests are. Another advantage of professional social media use is building a network with people in the field of my interest. I can communicate with them and also easily have their attentions on my project. For these reasons, I believe social media are a set of tools to survive for modern people.
