@dianeduane - this reminds me of your "So You Want to Be a Wizard" series
I'm a big fan of wizards-as-programmers, but I think it's so much better when you lean into programming tropes.
A spell the wizard uses to light the group's campfire has an error somewhere in its depths, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The wizard spends a lot of his time trying to track down the exact conditions that cause the failure.
The wizard is attempting to create a new spell that marries two older spells together, but while they were both written within the context of Zephyrus the Starweaver's foundational work, they each used a slightly different version, and untangling the collisions make a short project take months of work.
The wizard has grown too comfortable reusing old spells, and in particular, his teleportation spell keeps finding its components rearranged and remixed, its parts copied into a dozen different places in the spellbook. This is overall not actually a problem per se, but the party's rogue grows a bit concerned when the wizard's "drying spell" seems to just be a special case of teleportation where you teleport five feet to the left and leave the wetness behind.
A wizard is constantly fiddling with his spells, making minor tweaks and changes, getting them easier to cast, with better effects, adding bells and whistles. The "shelter for the night" spell includes a tea kettle that brings itself to a boil at dawn, which the wizard is inordinately pleased with. He reports on efficiency improvements to the indifference of anyone listening.
A different wizard immediately forgets all details of his spells after he's written them. He could not begin to tell you how any of it works, at least not without sitting down for a few hours or days to figure out how he set things up. The point is that it works, and once it does, the wizard can safely stop thinking about it.
Wizards enjoy each other's company, but you must be circumspect about spellwork. Having another wizard look through your spellbook makes you aware of every minor flaw, and you might not be able to answer questions about why a spell was written in a certain way, if you remember at all.
Wizards all have their own preferences as far as which scripts they write in, the formatting of their spellbook, its dimensions and material quality, and of course which famous wizards they've taken the most foundational knowledge from. The enlightened view is that all approaches have their strengths and weaknesses, but this has never stopped anyone from getting into a protracted argument.
Sometimes a wizard will sit down with an ancient tome attempting to find answers to a complicated problem, and finally find someone from across time who was trying to do the same thing, only for the final note to be "nevermind, fixed it".

*Saw Theme Song Plot Twist Reveal*
Tumblr media
NYPD chase a man for fare evasion, tase him, become “aware of a knife” and then started blasting, hitting a cop, and two bystanders (one in the head) before getting this guy. Backtracking with “well this guy has done xyz before”, the cops didn’t know that. They frantically looked him up so they could justify a mass shooting of New Yorkers.
They drew guns over skipping the fare. They fired at anything that moved when they thought he had a knife. No confirmation that he even did have a knife.
Appalling.

Ok, but what makes this so beautiful is that this is Armand's own fault! When he finally decided to kill Daniel peacefully, Louis recovers his lucidity and stops him. And knowing that Armand can alter his memories, Louis requests to be the one to build the memories and in doing so, created Daniel's tenacity.
He gave Daniel an appetite, and a talent for digging out, the truth. As an apology for all the pain, Louis gave Daniel a purpose, a drive and Armand, thinking that everything was back in hand, blithely allowed it. I know he was thinking they will drop this boy off at the nearest hovel, let him crawl out of it and their lives forever. Louis was healing, he wasn't angry anymore, and he still loved Armand, so all must be right with the world, right?
So when Louis decided to give Daniel a second chance at interviewing him, Armand let it be because what could possibly go wrong?
What could go wrong with a man who has had several decades of life experience, tragedy and joy under his belt, all the while the subliminal message of "TRUTH MUST ALWAYS SEEK TRUTH" playing in a loop in the background of his consciousness.
The MINUTE Armand agreed to get Daniel on a plane to Dubai, he set the countdown on his marriage and the carefully crafted illusion he put together for him and Louis. Because at the end of all of this, all he had were lies and he inadvertently helped create the very thing that would destroy them completely.
And THAT'S how you tell a story, goddamit!

And take notes! If you make changes, or where you found it (online or somewhere else) and if it's a hit or what. Food history is extremely important and often overlooked, family compiled recipe books are a fantastic snapshot.
You should be starting a recipe book. I don't give a shit if you're only 20-years-old. The modern web is rotting away bit by bit before our very eyes. You have no idea when that indie mom blog is going down or when Pinterest will remove that recipe. Copy it down in a notebook, physically or digitally. Save it somewhere only you can remove it. Trust me, looking for a recipe only to find out it's been wiped off the internet is so fucking sad. I've learned my lesson one too many times.

Ok, hear me out. I am watching Man From U.N.C.L.E. again because it is a comfort movie and while I love it, I am deeply saddened every time Armie Hammer shows up on the screen since his fall from grace, to put it extremely fucking delicately.
I desperately would LOVE a sequel, but I have no desire to see him reprise this role, so I got to thinking. I recently watched The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, another fun Guy Ritchie vehicle, and was introduced to the gorgeous specimen, Alan Ritchson. He already does some interesting and passable accents, has fantastic chemistry with Henry Cavill, and I think he makes an even better Red Peril.
So when are we seeing it? My body is READY for a sequel!
