Ohio Paranormal Exploration Society: A Look Back at Their Work and Legacy

The Ohio State Reformatory- Mansfield, Ohio

This is a prison that was opened in 1896, but closed its doors in 1990. Now it's open to the public for tours and has been featured in many Paranormal TV shows and movies including Shawshank Redemption.

Haunted Schoolhouse- Akron, Ohio

The Haunted Schoolhouse is a popular haunted attraction located in the basement of the old Akron Central School building. The attraction was opened in 2001 by two friends who were looking for an interesting way to spend their spare time. They decided that they would create a haunted house, but it needed to be different from anything else out there. They wanted something more authentic and less predictable than what people have come to expect when they visit a haunted house or walk through a cornfield maze at night with friends.

The Haunted Schoolhouse is open on Friday and Saturday nights from September through October, so if you’re in Akron this Halloween season be sure not to miss this uniquely creepy experience!

There are a few haunted places in Columbus that are worth mentioning. Although the city is not a major tourist destination, it does house one of the largest universities in the United States: Ohio State University.

This college has a dormitory named Thayer Hall and it is said to be haunted by a student named Nora. This girl committed suicide in one of its rooms back in 1909 and ever since then, students have claimed to see her ghost wandering around the hallways at night.

There’s also an annual séance held in Thayer Hall every October where people gather together with candles and incantations as they try to get Nora’s spirit to come back from where she went after death!

Franklin Castle- Cleveland, Ohio

If you're looking for a haunted place in Cleveland, Ohio that's something of a local legend, the Franklin Castle is it. Built by Dr. David Tod in 1885 and modeled after Edinburgh Castle, this Gothic Revival style mansion was once the home of one of Cleveland's most prominent families (Tod). It remained so until 1952 when it was converted into apartments and rented out to various tenants over time until its final owner passed away in 1979.

Since then, there have been many reports of paranormal activity at this historic location including strange noises coming from inside the house or its upper levels where no one lives or works anymore even though they have been sealed off from visitors' eyesight since around 1900 (Haunted Places). One lady claims she saw an apparition dressed like an old-fashioned nurse while walking through some hallways near her apartment door one night (Haunted Places). Another woman who lived there during the 1960s claims she heard voices coming from upstairs rooms when no one else was home!

Franklin Castle has housed many different businesses over time including restaurants with fancy French names like Le Petit Cafe D'or at one point along with children's clothing stores called "Babies Galore" which sold beautiful gowns for newborns made out of satin fabric imported from Italy specifically for American mothers who wanted their babies dressed up when they came home from hospital after birth services involving family members present (Haunted Places).

Malabar Farm State Park- Lucas, Ohio

Malabar Farm State Park is a state park in Lucas, Ohio, United States. It is located on the former estate of William J. and Elizabeth M. Malabar.

The Malabar Farm was built in 1845 by William J. and Elizabeth M. Malabar as a wedding gift to their family after they got married at age 18 and 21 respectively. They had 10 children together who all lived on this farm until they became adults and moved away or married off themselves; some even moved back into their parents' home after getting divorced or widowed! During its peak years, there were over 50 buildings on the property including barns, chicken coops (or hen houses), stables/carriage house/garage etc.. Today there are just 5 left standing along with many other smaller structures scattered throughout these fields; only one house remains from when it was first built back in 1845 - there seemed like nothing else was really worth keeping around except for maybe just those few remaining structures because everything else had been demolished by locals who took advantage of an easy way out (I mean you could probably still find pieces here & there if you looked hard enough though).

The Moonville Tunnel- McArthur, Ohio

The Moonville Tunnel is a railway tunnel once used by the Ohio Central Railroad. The tunnel's length is 1,621 feet and it's located in McArthur, Ohio. The story goes that in 1856, a group of workers were building railroad tracks through the area when an accident occurred. As legend goes, one engineer was killed when his train flew off the track into one of these tunnels. His ghost has been seen walking around this area ever since.

Another tale says that there was once a woman who lived near this location with her daughter named Alice. According to legend, they were murdered here by two men during their search for gold on their land which was actually owned by someone else at the time (and had been for years). The ghosts of both mother and child have also been spotted here over time...

TAPS family (The Atlantic Paranormal Society)

The TAPS family is made up of Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson, Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango. The two brothers (Jason and Grant) are the head honchos of the operation. They are based in New York City and run a paranormal investigating company called Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS).

The group was first formed in 2003 when they were filming a documentary titled "Beyond the Grave". It was this film that gave birth to what we now know as Ghost Hunters fame!

Use a digital recorder, not a tape recorder simply because it’s easier, cheaper, and there are no studies showing one is better than the other for this use. Ask questions and be specific. If you have to, ask the same question multiple times. If you're at an old house or location, ask specifically who lived there or what happened there. Do your research ahead of time so you can tell if you’re getting good results. Listen to your recordings right when you are finished. Don't wait because it will be harder to remember later on, and you might want to reply to them while they are talking.

Keep the background noise to a minimum if possible, since it can make it hard to hear more subtle sounds and voices. EVPs are best when you are specific about what you're trying to find out and spend time listening carefully for any responses that could be there!

Test your equipment before you go to the location. Don't go to a place alone. Use common sense. Safety in numbers is real, my fiends. Take notes about what you're experiencing. Don't use Ouija boards or other summoning rituals. Never open a door you don’t know how to close. Make sure there are no other people around when you're recording your EVPs. With your group, do a sweep of the location to be certain you know where all living people are at all times. Make sure no one nearby is using a machine that emits white noise of some kind. Make sure you know what normal sounds sound like in the building where you're recording the EVP.  That way you can be sure that an EVP is something other than those sounds. Be sure to leave the area exactly as it was before you began your investigation.

There's no guarantee that you'll capture any EVPs, but making sure to follow these steps will decrease the chances of getting false positives, and increase the chances that you'll get something real.
