Welcome to the Paper Brick Site

This resource will be of use to war-gamers, railway modellers, architectural modellers and anyone involved in creating paper-craft buildings

The PDF files linked from this site came from the original paperbrick UK site, which is no longer on-line. I understand that site was created by the late Derrick Stapleford, so you have him to thank for the PDF files. Paper brick sheets generated by his site are copyrighted, though a message on each sheet generated by the original paperbrick site states, you are free to use this file for any use.

I am converting files to JPEG format to make it easier for anyone familiar with the clone brush tool, found in some image eitors, to modify existing brick sheets, creating new textures. The JPEGs are large files, 3508 x 2480 pixels, which is the correct size for A4 paper at 300 dpi. I might create some smaller files sometime in the future.

The PDF files and JPEGs are hosted on different cloud platforms. The PDF sheets don't cost me anything to host so should be online for some time. I am hosting the JPEGs on a different platform, which I have to pay for. It is funded until October 2025, when I will consider if I am to continue paying for the service If you want the JPEG textures, download them now. They might not be on-line after September 2025.

Sorry for the lack of recent updates. I have been busy with family commitments. BT have decided to end their cloud service at the end of October 2024 which means any data I have there will be lost. I’m just too busy to port the data they hold to my other cloud space. (I do have copies on DVDs and USB RAM so nothing will be lost forever, it just won’t be on the web for now). Things should get back to normal as soon as I have time. I have paid my Google subscription for 2024 to 2025 so content will be secure until September 2025.

Unless otherwise stated all of the above JPEGs are 3508 x 2480 pixels which is the correct size for A4 paper at 300 dpi. Most of the above brick papers are 1:76 scale. Anyone modelling in larger scales should be able to crop the 300 dpi images and print at 72 dpi. Don't forget to create a white paper margin if you do this. Many printers have limits on how close to the edge of a sheet of paper they can print.

Google drive sometimes shows the ‘No preview available’ error when attempting to preview a file. I have read that clearing your cache and deleting cookies solves this problem.

Converting PDF to other image types

I am using the office Convert Pdf to Jpg Jpeg Tiff Free software to create JPEGs and other formats from PDFs. Here are a few terse notes I made about other software I tested and the results of those tests.

A recent test of IrfanView64 gave disappointing results with pages having a block-like repetative look.

The GIMP directory contains an example of a converted file and a modified file created with a clone brush. The changes to the file are best viewed by dropping both files in the same directory and then opening the directory with Faststone Image Viewer.

Updates

I intend to 'flatten' my directory structures in my Microsoft Cloud, which is where I store PDF files. Rather than being in one of many directories files of the same type of brick will be in the same directory. Sub-directories for different brick bonds or mortar types will disappear. Instead of looking in a sub-directory for a file you will just have to read the file name which will describe the files attributes.

The filename will indicate:

brick type;

bond;

size (eg UK metric);

header details;

mortar colour (dark, light or RGB values in hex);

mortar height in mm;

 scale;

paper size;

unique identifier (3 digit) for files with the same parameters.

Converting existing file names may take some time.

Brick Textures

The Wordsworth Model Railway site hosts a number of paper brick sheets and 00 Gauge Card Kits.

A number of deviantart contributors have created brick textures. Some are copyrighted, others are released with a Creative Commons License. Please check their license terms. The contributor AGF81 has a selection of bricks and tiles as do sigurd3000, strapaca and simoonmurray. Nighty-stock also has some textures which include brickwork.

The Big Indoor Trains site also hosts brick textures. These are copyrighted, though the site does encourage visitors to use the resources.
