it sounds like a stupid thing to care so much about but god i am so sick and tired of seeing people becoming disconnected and cruel from spending too much time in insular online spaces and i know it intimately because it has happened to me so many goddamn times through my life and yeah it's easy and it feels good to be mean and angry and to feed your moral outrage and rail against the entire world from your phone but god the cost. but god what it takes from you when you let the world make you cruel and angry. i have given so many years of my life to the outrage machine and all i have created is viable ad space

and please for the love of god spend less time online. you can use the excuses of connection and information up to a certain point but if there is one thing the internet is really really good at it is making people mistrusting and cruel

please remember to give other people some grace. there is no gold star award for being the most right and unyielding all the time. you don't make progress (or friends) by narrowing the acceptable range of viewpoints. if you really want to build community you're going to have to meet people where they're at and not constantly berate them for not knowing the strict rules of online leftist discourse

was listening to an audiobook called the chaos machine by max fisher (highly recommend) and he said something about how around the late 2010s “it felt as if your peers suddenly scorned nuance and emotional moderation [because of how social media algorithms favor moral outrage and strong emotion]” and i feel like that really clicked everything into place for me

i don’t believe in considering anyone or anything inherently and ontologically evil because i think that can get you into some real nasty places however. i do think all social media platforms are inherently and ontologically evil and are genuinely destroying our brains and society at an alarming rate
