Healthy Oyster
ysters are saltwater bivalve mollusks with plump, mineral-rich shells closed by a single adductor muscle. They are members of the Ostreidae family.
In the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean seas, they live at the bottom of shallow coastal waters, often adhering to rocks or other objects.
They can be farmed in bays and estuaries as well. Pearl oysters are farmed in order to obtain pearls.
What does it taste like to eat oysters?
Their flavor can range from bland to salty depending on where they are harvested.
Oysters can be purchased live in the shell or shucked (removed from their shells). They can also be canned and sold in supermarkets in jars and cans.
They are high in protein, zinc, iron, and a variety of other minerals. They are almost fat-free. A dozen regular-sized oysters will contain approximately 70 calories.
Oyster Nutrition
Cardiovascular Health Oysters, like fish and other seafoods, are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are a type of healthy fat or cholesterol. They have been shown to reduce the likelihood of plaque buildup in blood vessels and improve overall cardiovascular health. Their vitamin E content also strengthens cellular membranes, which protects against heart disease.
Circulation of Blood Oysters, due to their high potassium and magnesium content, can lower blood pressure while also increasing circulation and blood oxygenation. Meanwhile, their abundant iron stores aid in the formation of red blood cells, increase the metabolic rate of the body, and protect against conditions such as anemia.
Bone Stability Oysters, which contain a plethora of beneficial minerals, can significantly improve the strength of your bones. Calcium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, and selenium all help to increase bone durability and protect against osteoporosis.
Immunity You've probably heard of antioxidants. Antioxidants, which are commonly found in teas, herbs, and fresh vegetables, fight dangerous free radicals in the body, lowering the risk of heart disease and premature aging. Oysters, on the other hand, are high in antioxidants, as well as vitamins C and E, all of which contribute to the body's immune system being strengthened.
Aphrodisiac Oysters have long been thought to be an aphrodisiac, owing to their high zinc content. Zinc has been shown to improve sexual drive and masculinity in men in particular.
How to Cook and Serve Oysters
Wash and scrub the outer shell of the oysters before shucking them (removing them from their shells), then watch my favorite video on how to shuck oysters below.
Keep in mind that oysters can be consumed raw or barely cooked. They can also be grilled, baked, or steamed.
On the half shell, raw oysters are served on ice.
Oysters make light appetizers that pair well with white wine or champagne. They are most beautiful in the fall and winter.
How to Purchase Oysters
After moving to the UAE, I was looking for a place where I could get really good frozen products, and one of my Korean friends recommended this Korean food mart, where I found frozen products such as beef, pork, fish, and oysters that were of high quality. Not only do they have frozen products, but they also have a variety of fmcg products and kimchi. If you want to find authentic kimchi, search for "famous korean kimchi" on Google.
The most important thing is to make sure the shell is securely closed and the oyster is still alive. Tap the shell if it is partially open. If the oyster is still alive, its shell will close.
A fresh oyster is plump, has a natural creamy grey color, and is surrounded by a clear liquid. Fresh oysters have a pleasant, briny aroma reminiscent of the sea. Avoid those that have a strong fishy odor.
Important Points to Remember
Clams and oysters filter 55-75 litres of water per day, and those that live in polluted waters can concentrate pathogens that cause illness. They can also concentrate minerals that are undesirable.
Consuming raw shellfish from contaminated waters can make you sick, so buy oysters from reputable markets.
Storage of Oysters
Oysters can be stored in the fridge for up to one week in an open container covered with a damp cloth, but they are best eaten fresh as soon as possible.
