I feel like another factor is number of adaptations that portay events and characters differently, with mdzs having like a million, tgcf with just a few, and svsss with almost nothing.

People be discussing MXTX novels like philosophical texts and starting in-fandom wars because of them.

In terms of severity, imho: MDZS (rumours, white-painting intentions, etc.)> TGCF (morality and stalking and EQ)> SVSSS (unreliability, again, morality, madness and wrongs). Oh, and toxic fans, but you can find them anywhere, just that they can show up more or less.

you mentioned wanting mxtx meta discussions? im currently reading through mdzs so i dont have much knowledge to go off of, but what are some parts of volume one that you feel gets overlooked in analysis? Scenes that are microcosms of the themes or conflicts, dialouge that gets buried by later stuff and things like that? Or just any parts of volume 1 you enjoy looking back on

Oauhhh fuck I'm rereading vol 1 rn and might come back to this as I do but to be so honest I have to say that the Dancing Goddess arc is gonna hit the top of the list regardless. Maybe most underrated arc in the book because BOTH THE DONGHUA AND CQL FUCKED IT!!!!

In the book it is made explicit that the Goddess is not an entity of resentful energy – her power is a divine power as gained through prayer and legitimate exchange:

MDZS IS ALL ABOUT THIS!!!! MDZS is CONSTANTLY coming back to LICENSE OF VIOLENCE!!!!! OVER AND OVER AGAIN in MDZS we get discussion of what things are allowed and enabled because they are done by certain means or through certain channels, even when those things are evil! Anyone can tell you MDZS heavily emphasizes themes about how using stigmatized/"unfair" means is considered to delegitimize one's actions (most notably see our protagonist Wei Wuxian and her dark mirror Jin Guangyao) but just as much it is relevant that it repeatedly comes back to people doing harm or even evil getting away with it by virtue of using supposedly "legitimate" means! And while the Dancing Goddess is not the first example of this (Mo manor also obviously does license of violence stuff) she is an early and blatant one!!! THE CULTIVATORS CAN'T STOP HER BECAUSE SHE AND THEY ARE EMPOWERED BY THE SAME THIIIIIIIIING I WONDER IF THAT APPLIES ANYWHERE ELSE!!!!!!!!

And then both the donghua and the drama decide to connect it to their respective scavenger hunt plots, the drama also connecting it by this to how it destroys this theme as it pertains to the Wen. OK. Sure. No it's Just Evil. Whatever. Who cares why any of this happened
