Protect Patio Furniture from Harsh Winters

 Outdoor furniture is NOT winter proof

Outdoor patio furniture may come from a variety of sources and retailers but regardless of where and how, it will suffer the consequences of harsh Canadian winters. While patio furniture is designed for use outside, Canadian winters offer prolonged exposure to snow, pollution, dirt and UV rays. Yes, the sun still shines, and UV exposure is still strong despite the cold.

 Invest in covers that stand up to cold and harsh weather

To keep outdoor furniture well protected we should invest in appropriatepatio furniture covers. There are various types of covers available at stores or online, but many are not designed for Canadian climate. Heavy canvas or vinyl or a combination of both may or may not be the answer. Unless the canvas (oxford cloth) is UV treated and water repellant treated it wont last. Covers with Vinyl may become brittle and stiff. This can lead to easy cracking or tearing. It may not become apparent until summer when the covers seem brittle and chalky.

For long lasting protection we recommend for you to look for quality marine grade fabrics or tear resistant fabrics such as Gridtex™ or Ripstop™ fabrics that are made with a cross hatch design which is stronger and more tear resistant. But keep in mind these fabrics must still be treated for ultraviolet and water resistance.

A caution about “waterproof” covers. For covers to be truly 100% waterproof they would need an impermeable layer such as vinyl. While there are alternatives to vinyl, these tend to be cost prohibitive for simple patio covers. They can be had but expect to pay hundreds of dollars instead of fifty or so dollars. Also, fully waterproof covers have a hidden issue in that they are not breathable and trap moisture leading to unsightly and problematic mildew issues. Vinyl covers as noted above also tend to stiffen in the cold.

On the other hand, quality water resistant fabrics do keep most of the water out and allow the cover to breath, thus not trapping moisture. Polyurethane inner coatings are a good choice to achieve this good balance. A check with the seller or the production information should clearly outline this feature.

 Size and selection in a world of non-standards

It may seem logical that patio furniture comes in a few standard sizes but the opposite is true. Furniture is sold by many retailers and online companies and they come from a vast number of different factories, the result is that there are no standard sizes. So, finding and selecting well-fitting covers can be challenging.

While major retailers might stock some covers, they usually have a small selection in limited quantities and only for a few months a year. Online companies have a larger variety of cover types in a wide variety of sizes. You can buy a loveseat cover, sofa cover and bench cover. You can buy covers for patio tables in sets or stand-alone.
