🌈 While this blog’s primary focus IS on the Smiling Critters, I will mainly be posting about my own Smiling Critters AU: Rainbow Gate, my very own rehaul/reimagining of the Smiling Critters storyline!

This post is funny is hindsight as the nightmare critters have grown on me quite a bit! My thoughts about them have changed and aren’t as negative!

My thoughts now:

- While I don’t know if it’s likely, I atleast headcanon that they were made as a jab towards the failures/controversies of the smiling critters line, with the characters having an edgy twist as a means to poke fun at catnap stuff (I assume primarily in the show due to how catnap was infamous in universe to come off as scary, even when it wasn’t intentional) to appeal to older audiences like teenagers or people who found the smiling critters stuff interesting due to the controversies and accidental scary nature of Catnap in the show (while im pretty sure that timeline doesn’t add up in universe, I also like to think that the nightmare critters are an edgy twist made to capitalize off of the popularity of the critters years later as the critters are popular in teenage and college circles after the failure of the brand)

- because of them coming off like an edgy twist to appeal to older audiences, I usually headcanon the nightmare critters as usually being older than the smiling critters, but only by maybe a year or two, as I personally hc the smiling critters as all being the same age with older/younger differences being just based on birth month)

- they technically do make sense if you are to consider a few ideas, 1. That they were supposed to be made for another advertising campaign tv show like the critters were (as I think the critters tv show was made exclusively to advertise the toys hence why it was short? Idk) or 2. maybe that they were supposed to be for a second season that was pulled due to controversy? I’m not as fond of the idea of the nightmare critters intending on being used for a season 2, but it makes sense enough to mention

- I still believe that they (mob entertainment) are definitely riding the critters popularity wave & the nightmare critters’ existence is apart of that .

- my favorites are Baba and Rabie . Here’s some an unfinished colored pencil doodle of them in the SC: Rainbow Gate style

What do you mean there’s a new critter like canonically that’s being revealed/hinted at in the new ppt teaser trailer for chapter 4 . I can’t say much on it yet nor can I do elaborate psychoanalysis like I did with all of the other teasers (although that was on a different blog) but it seems like it’s still going to be critters focused and that’s exciting to me ! I was worried that they were going to be treated as a one-off thing & chapter 4 would move on past them despite how chapter 3 only had 2 of them having important screentime while implying there were infact 8 of them that we hadn’t/wouldn’t get a chance to see , so it’s relieving to see we’re still in the smiling critters trenches

It’s actually a little bit funny since I was planning on drawing more, only to remember that I have finals coming up, which is kind of scary, despite just being primarily projects and essays . It’s been really hard doing drawing stuff since my tablet ordeal still isn’t solved and since I’ve been busy with school, but once I get my tablet back in order, you should expect a whole lot of stuff then !

I would’ve have a Halloween drawing to share , however because of my tablet situation , I can only provide some doodles I’ve done for Halloween costumes ! Maybe if I’m up for it, I’ll draw something late instead once my tablet situation is solved, but there’s no promises on that !

I’ve said my piece about it on Twitter after looking into stuff some more, and hooo boy I have opinions , which I will say below and go more into depth as I can type more here):

- the new critter seems to be implied to be part of a separate toy line from the Smiling Critters, called “Nightmare critters”. The sheep/lamb critter seen is allegedly not the main antagonist of chapter 4 (and apparently is named Baba Chops based off of leaks !)

- I do not understand how they would exist canonically if the company basically fails after the Smiling Critters are made due to the negative attention surrounding Catnap. Considering everything, it feels extremely out of place for them to make a new toy line carrying their likeness (vaguely?) & make them so far off from what they normally make toy-wise ? Do they even have the money at the time due to lawsuits, low sales, and money being put into the bigger bodies initiative? They did start the bigger bodies initiative BECAUSE the company was failing after all , so how and why did they make them canonically ?

- Even if they did choose to overhaul them & make a new toy line Because they refused to accept that it was a failure & they believe so strongly that they aren’t done with the smiling critters, why make them themed to be scary when the whole reason to why the critters were controversial was because one of them was scary ? Wasn’t the whole thing about them not being done with them implied to mean they wanted to do More stuff with the initial critters and not make a whole new group?

- If it’s the company’s way of poking fun at their mistakes/catnap’s perception by the public, it still feels weird because of the obvious “scary” route taken that’s so different from what they normally make toy-wise and because they made a conscious choice and effort to sweep Catnap under the rug & make people forget that he even existed . The decision to basically make Catnap “Lost Media” would make the choice to create the Nightmare Critters weird (but not impossible) if the motive was to poke fun at Catnap’s controversies (which is kind of funny to me. Imagine being a whole entire company and you had a really major mistake cause an entire recall of one of your toys on top of controversy stemming from that same cat being disturbing in the cartoons made for the toys , and getting so angry at him for existing and being a vessel for sabotage that you make a whole new toy brand to make fun of him for the mistake of existing and being a vessel for sabotage)

- Mob seems like they’re tryna continue to ride the popularity train that came from the Smiling Critters with this, and the results make me confused due to lore stuff I’ve said above

- hopefully because the chapter does seem to be containing new critter variants in the form of the nightmare critters, it means we may get more smiling critters stuff, which I was looking forward to due to the Smiling Critters feeling somewhat under used (we only got to know 2/8 of the bigger bodies in game & even then we don’t know much about BBI Dogday!)

brief break posting about one au to post about the first au i have for the critters ! i need to come up with names for all of this stuff eventually, as referring to the stuff ive primarily been posting as 'au 3' and this au stuff as 'au 1' all the time may get difficult due to the sheer amount of stuff i wanna share + what i want to do w/ it (in au 3's case) .. i'll get to doing that eventually ig

anyways, with these guys i was primarily working through figuring out how I want to draw a lot of the designs.... which is funny bc ive had this au cooking in my head since before gameplay trailer 2 was even released . its a bit funny how puella magi madoka magica seeped into these guys inspiration wise despite it not being intentional. now i can get back to working on my bigger art stuff

hi , a catnap from yesterday while I was working w/ colored pencils again .. he is on a page accompanied by some design stuff for some au 3 house hypotheticals as the canon houses for the critters don't fit what these guys have going on (though i do intend to keep the canon houses in mind when working w/ them) currently ive actually been working on some drawing stuff that ISN'T for this particular au (which i still need to come up with a name for this au involving these gay ass little puppets.. im not very good with au names) so i'll be positng an image dump of another au thing soon
