I think the most Lynchian scene of all time is the one just after this where Leland sings “Get Happy” and has a heart attack or something

Big fan of the moment in The Return where Laura tells Coop the “my father killed me” thing and he just goes “huh.”
re laura palmer though, i think it's so interesting that so many of the investigation's clues are recordings made by laura in one way or another - the camping videotape, her diaries, jacoby's tapes - as if she's still struggling for agency even after death. so many ways of self expression that will end up misinterpreted or overlooked by the people around her even post mortem.

Maybe this is just me but I always thought Chet Desmond BECAME Philip Jeffries, like one had to disappear for the other to appear.

Which I guess is why FWWM moves the Donna/James relationship to sort of be reactionary. Donna only gets with James because she knew Laura loved him, James only gets with Donna because he knew Laura loved her. They hope they can somehow piece together the love Laura felt for them out of each other.
I contend that Laura Palmer is the only woman James Hurley has ever had chemistry with.
Laura Palmer. Not Sheryl Lee.
Cause James/Maddy? Nope. Nothing there.
So why is that? Is it that by FWWM James Marshall's acting had improved? Is it the scientific equation of two naive good kids canceling each other out vs. naive kid + dark cynical kid = watchable?
All I know is that FWWM is maybe the only time I'm not confused about what James is feeling. I never doubt how much he loves Laura. Ironically how well he sells me on that may be a reason why his character in the series can feel so muddled on rewatch.
You left me with no doubts after FWWM, James! And now I am ALL doubts as you try to convince me you were actually holding back your words of love for Donna that entire time? Does anything you do mean anything?
I really do think that's the origin of the cognitive dissonance a lot of the audience has with James. We're told he's the pure of heart, but shown he may have the most shallow and easily discarded feelings of them all.

I think this is actually something really important to James’ character, that both of these things are true. His relationships with his mother and Laura have so entirely reshaped him that with Donna, Maddy and Evelyn he literally just does whatever they tell him while also hating himself the whole time because he knows he’s not being true to himself but the girl he could’ve been true to himself with died and he was (to his knowledge) the last person to see her alive.
This is a feeling common to a lot of teenage boys, I think, supposedly wearing your heart on your sleeve while also deep down having no idea what your real feelings are. Laura’s death cast James adrift and he’s so lost he just latches onto whoever he can, even though he clearly doesn’t really want to. It’s the same torture Laura put herself through with Leo and Jacques and their ilk, just to get over the pain.

"An evil that great in this beautiful world. Finally, does it matter what the cause?"
"Yes. Because it's our job to stop it."
"Maybe that's all Bob is: the evil that men do. Maybe it doesn't matter what we call it."

I always point to that scene as the ultimate disproof of that idea because you’re telling me this absolute fucking goober is Heisenberg?
Tumblr media
I think the funniest aspect of mainstream whiteboy breaking bad fandom is the vast swaths of dudes who genuinely believe that heisenberg is a whole alternate entity to walt that takes over his body in times of crisis and will point to specific scenes and go "look, this is where heisenberg comes out to protect walt", like that scene where he's trying to drive into oncoming traffic but snaps out of it at the last second or literally any scene where he furrows his brow and talks in a lower tone to intimidate someone. It's some goofy ass comic book shit but they actually believe that's what's going on

I mean there’s a pretty significant difference between his attitude towards his first kill and his last. People have a tendency to ignore character arcs and headcanon people as a mixture of their personalities across the seasons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know I've talked at this before a little bit but bear with me. I definitely understand the desire to push away from a lot of the (again, mostly joking but sometimes somewhat serious) "Tumblr fandom characterization" of a character like Jesse from Jesse (I believe in your language the word is "woobification". Our cultures share so much), but I just do not think posting about Jesse as "a GROWN MAN who KILLS PEOPLE devil emoji" is the way to do it at all. Positioning Jesse Pinkman as a character "who kills people" without nuance is so fundamentally at odds with the content of the show and the way he's depicted, his reactions and his feelings and his trauma, that it can really only come from a place of pure contrarianism. It's a characterization completely fueled by a desire to push back against the funny and/or cutesy Jesses that have dominated brba spaces that's also fully reliant on the idea that "killing people" = mature, serious character, that it's the violence that makes brba a "mature", "serious" show, which is kind of a bad read, in my opinion
