Long-Distance Coffee (Midnight Coffee #1)

I was given this ARC by the publisher in exchange for an Honest Review. It’s the story of Erin and Isabella. Erin lives in New York City and is a Personal Trainer who seems to have quite hellish insomnia. I found interesting the lengths that she’s gone through in the past to try and solve the problem, and also found myself nodding when she talked about the sleeping pills and her opinion on them. She goes on her Twitter account one night and finds someone going by Apple Core, who is eviscerating (with words, with words) a famous washed up misogynistic idiot (I can think of four off the top of my head right this second). Erin starts tweeting at what she assumes is a woman, and Isabella, responds. Isabella’s a writer/former CEO with a new baby (go Alberto!) who lives in Florida and is generally up in the wee hours of the morning/night because the cutie Alberto has stomach problems going on. It’s a slow build epistolary story for sure, and we really get to know each of these characters inside and out between tweets, and then various sorts of Skyping. As you can guess, I liked the characters a lot. (Which is good, ‘cause this was definitely a character-driven novel). They were unique and definitely had the spark of verisimilitude in them. It did take me a bit to get into the flow of the book at the beginning, and here and there some of the passages seemed a little stilted, but, then I think I got used to the pacing and flew through it. Overall I really liked the book. I also found out after I’d finished it that it had been a fanfic? I’m not sure how I missed it, but, I’m glad I’ve read it now. Oh, and yay, according to the end of the book there’s another part coming out soon too!

Book Problems/Rant: At Her Feet by Rebekah Weatherspoon

***DO NOT PROCEED IF EASILY TRIGGERED BY BIOLOGICAL SEX, FEMALE ANATOMY, NONE PREFERRED PRONOUNS, AND LESBOPHOBIA*** 

This is my initial reaction to reading a paragraph with a transgender woman in it, and her reaction to someone having a problem with her:

“Whatever. Fuck Liz. She’s just jealous of my hot Asian cock,’ Gloria says, grabbing her crotch in a vulgar gesture. “maybe I’ll ask Sage if she wants to suck it.”

This is in reaction with a lesbian having voiced her opinion of being uncomfortable with a man, even in a dress, being at the party. Keep in mind, this is a party for females only (supposedly), most of who are lesbians (or so I assume sense the partners they are all with are women). I don’t care that the transwoman has had top surgery and now has boobs, that doesn’t make him female. It doesn’t even make him female if he has bottom surgery as well. (not getting into that on this post)

Oh and it gets worse, no one, and I mean No One calls Gloria (transwoman) out on his threat. It’s actually seen as a joke, and than Suzy, fucken Suzy the main character, jokes about it ‘violating the rules’ for the party. Not how it would violate a person’s personal space, be seen as harassment, and sexual assault. None of that is addressed, it’s simply brushed off to the side, that (again I say) literal violence was hinted at, and how Gloria was so out of line with his reaction to someone not liking him.

‘oh you don’t like what I have between my legs, and that I am in a female space only, well let me just pull my dick out, wave it in your face, and then tell you to suck it.’ 

Literally.Male.Reaction.

How was this allowed to be put into Any book, And be ok? Even the characters are ok with it. They don’t realize how messed up that is. I just–I’m having a hard time finding words for my disbelief.

And now let’s move onto what Holly said,

“Bizzy showed me the invitation. It said all female-identified persons,…” You can not identify as female. What transwomen and transmen can do, is identify with the patriarchies’ gender ideas of what a man and woman is. Being, pink=girl, blue=boy. Or Masculinity=lack of emotions, being worthy only by physical strength, aggression, dominance, and so on. Femininity=how well you are sexually objectified (my dad was nice enough to point this out), nurturing, how subservient you are, and so on. (small examples because I do not want to get too deep into this if I don’t have to, mostly here to make my point, and get out.)
