My father had an anecdote about the Monty Hall problem that he loved, where he tried to explain it to an engineer in the cafeteria at work and the guy didn't get it. He explained it a couple different times, a couple different ways (my father favors 'imagine there were 100 doors') and the guy still wasn't getting it.
Finally my father gets sick of explaining it abstractly and says "look, we're going to run it a bunch of times, and tally how well each strategy works" and the guy agrees, so my father grabs three cups and a little balled up piece of paper and gets ready to simulate the Monty Hall problem, presumably dozens and dozens of times. His friend stares at the experiment set-up, thinks for a moment, and without running the game even once says "yeah I get it, switching gives you twice the chance"
#I mean the way I think about it is that there are two bad options and 1 good option. if you choose the bad option initially#it's better to switch cause you'll then get the good option#if you choose the good option it's better to stay#so in 2/3 of cases switching is the right move#so you should always switch for an average better return
