               HE   WAS   USED   TO   DARKNESS,   USED   TO   STILLNESS,   TO   THE   low   hum   that   would   vibrate   the   mind   until   the   brain   felt   numb.   He   was   used   to   it,   knew   what   it   was   because   he   was   it.   All   the   darkness   and   the   shadows   out   of   the   corner   of   the   eye   was   him.   He   suffocated   those   within   it,   made   them   grow   fearful,   made   them   grow   mad   with   it.   He   struck   anxieties,   crept   and   crawled   into   the   hearts   of   many   with   something   so   simple   as   a   whispered   ‘boo’.   

                  THIS   WAS   WHAT   HE   WAS   KNOWN   TO   BE,   WHAT   HE   thrived   to   be:   he   was   the   unknown,   he   was   the   fear,   he   was   the   dark.   It   was   his   home.   He   was   not   the   light,   the   warmth,   the   comfort…   he   wasn’t   what   she   desired,   wanted,   or   needed.   

               Sometimes,   that   thought   shook   him   to   his   core.   

               GOLDEN   EYES   LOOKED   DOWN   AT   THE   GIRL,   AT   SHOCK,   WITH   uncertainties   that   he   always   cursed.   She   called   for   him   to   stay,   to   be   that   reassurance   of   what   plagued   her   mind.   Didn’t   she   understand   that   what   she   felt   was   the   sole   purpose   of   himself?   How   could   he   undo   what   he   was?   How   does   he   bring   her   the   happiness   of   what   she   feared?   To   do   that   would   take   away   his   existence.   Could   he   do   that   to   himself?   Allow   part   of   being   to   crumble   to   simply   aid   a   girl—   

               But   she   isn’t   just   some   girl.   

               OOGIE   SIGHED,   AND   THE   SHADOWS   SEEMED   TO   DISSIPATE   AT   the   action.   He   could   feel   something   leave   him.   What   it   was   he   didn’t   know,   but   he   glanced   back   at   the   girl   who   was   on   the   ground.   Oogie   shifted,   lowered   himself   to   a   crouch   in   front   of   her.   His   head   tilted.   Fear,   the   cold,   the   horror…   simply   vanished   in   the   immediate   area   around   them.   Nothing   crept   or   crawled,   nothing   shuddered…   nothing   happened   except   the   small   smile   that   graced   the   corner   of   his   lips,   “   I’m   here,   ”   his   voice   was   a   vibrated   calm,   “   Ease   your   mind,   little   one.   I’m   here,   ”   a   gloved   hand   reached   out,   fingers   lifted   her   chin   gingerly,   “   What   frightens   you   so?   ”
