Controlling Behaviour

Controlling and coercive behaviour is abuse, and it can look like this;

- telling you who you can and can’t speak to, isolating you from your friends and family

- controlling what you put on your social media and who sees it

- forcing you to delete your social media

- not allowing you to have control over your own body, such as not allowing you to get tattoos and piercings or dye your hair or wear what you want

- insisting they have all of your passwords to your accounts and access to your phone and messages

- accusing you of cheating with no real reason to do so, presuming guilty until proven innocent

- holding you back from following your dreams and/or making you doubt your abilities e.g. going to university, getting a new job, travelling 

- not allowing you to speak to or be friends with members of the opposite sex

- making you send updates and photographic evidence of who you are with and where you are to prove that you aren’t lying to them

- criticising small things such as the way you dress, the way you act or talk

- threats of leaving/self harm/taking away “privileges” if you don’t do as they say

- making their love towards you conditional e.g. “I’d love you more if you stopped doing this”

- holding long term grudges about issues that should have been solved

- guilt tripping you in order to get what they want

- forcing you to prove to them your love by making some extravagant gesture e.g. “If you loved me you wouldn’t do this”

- belittling you for long-held beliefs, not allowing you to have opposing opinions

if you have been abusive to someone….

even if you don’t mean to be abusive

or even if your abusive behaviour is you reacting really badly to mental illness or old traumas

even if you’re making an honest and sincere effort to not be abusive anymore and not engage in controlling behaviours

if someone does not want to be around you they have the right to leave

nobody owes you extra chances, nobody owes you a nice sit down where you just explain, nobody owes you forgiveness or understanding or patience or the opportunity to hurt them again just so you can prove you won’t take advantage of that opportunity, this time

if you try to guilt or coax or bully them into staying, no matter how sad you are or how sure you are you can stop hurting them – you’re just doing the same damn thing all over again.

if you are truly committed to not being an abuser anymore, you have to do it specifically to stop being an abuser at all, not as a way to get someone to stay when they don’t want to.

you have to actually follow through with that commitment, and let people make decisions you don’t like without trying to punish, manipulate, or intimidate them into doing what you want.
