Louis’ rebirth into vampirism is so tragic from both perspectives and I’m so glad to see more and more takes that are holding space for each of them.
From Louis’ perspective, he’s a black creole man who’s experienced a barrage of constant trauma and shame for years. He’s wrestling with his queerness, his raised religion, his family, and his mental health. He’s the most vulnerable he’s probably ever been and Lestat chooses that moment, when he’s drunk and all of that shit is crashing down on him, to offer him vampirism?
And he does it in such a terrifying way. He’s right to feel hunted. He’s right to feel like Lestat took his life. Regardless of Lestat’s intentions, Louis’ right to feel however the fuck he wants about it, because it’s traumatic, no matter how you spin it.
And then you have Lestat, who’s deeply traumatized himself, and acting out of fear and desperation. He’s been courting Louis for months, silently observing his thoughts, knowing all of the aforementioned shit and watching it crush Louis in real time.
Like y’all, his boyfriend just got drunk, had a mental breakdown, lost his entire support system, and now he wants to kill himself. Lestat’s freaking the fuck out. It’s happening again. What happened to Nicki is happening again. Are these the circumstances under which Lestat should have offered Louis vampirism? Definitely not, but he’s not exactly known for his incredible planning skills, and he’s triggered himself. So he does the only thing his impulsive, unwell, and possibly possessed self can think to do.
And there’s still something beautiful happening here, because as fucked up as it is, Lestat is trying to save Louis’ life, and Louis lets him.
Lestat is ultimately wrong. Louis’ not ready to become a vampire. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t love between them in that moment. That’s kind of what makes the episode hit for me. And we don’t have to invalidate either of their experiences to get there.
How does the ancient wisdom textpost go? “I do love when two very fucked up people are in very fucked up love with each other.” Isn’t there a sliver of hope in that?

Season 3 is going to be a challenge for some of you Armand defenders, but not for me, because as soon as we get Armand in Paris tying his hair back in ribbons and wearing cravats and frock coats or whatever other cunty historical outfits the iwtv costume department cooks up, Armand could commit any number of heinous, evil actions and I would simply stare at my TV with cartoon heart eyes popping out of my head anytime he is on screen.
#iwtv#can’t wait to see my two cancelled husbands#you might forgive them#i want them to get worse#lemme see armand murder everyone because he’s repressed
